I have to agree 100% on this. You can't even call the Matri deal an "insurance" move. It is like Juve were at the playground and were making teams with Inter and Milan. Juve got stuck with the player nobody wanted and are looking at an ass-whooping this second half of the season. How many goals have our forwards scored so far in this second half?? Matri was the solution?? He's an average player and won't make the difference.

I just wanna throw out Juve's "financial situation" considering this club has blown millions over the past 3 years and nothing has come out of it. How are you going to put out an average team in a new stadium?? You can't sell out in the old one, how are you going to sell out in the newer, smaller one?? You need to put out a good product in order for the people to come out and watch the games. Juve are probably losing out on international support as well considering this will be their 2nd year of no CL football. Let's face it, they aren't finishing 4th. You can't win when you can't score and can't defend. There was a time when the Juve forward line couldn't score but were scrapping out wins because they played great defense. This club is doomed, I think the damage has already been done. You can't put together a solid core/team if you keep changing players. These loan players won't last. I wouldn't spend more than 8 mil on Aquilani.

Dino its not fair saying the past 3 years, given the current management has only been in place for half a year....

Signing an arguably overvalued Alessandro Matri at €18m is a consequence of shopping in the wrong market, says Rob Paton


Whilst securing Alessandro Matri on a sensible low-cost loan is in keeping with Juventus’ sound business approach, can the same be said of how they ended up with Matri?

Start with how the club missed out on Giampaolo Pazzini, joining Inter on January 27 for €12m cash plus €7m-rated Jonathan Biabiany. Reports suggested two days earlier – as Inter announced interest in the 26-year-old – Juve offered €20m for a summer deal after Beppe Marotta met the player and Riccardo Garrone on January 23.

Sampdoria’s President considered it but chose Inter’s offer that also involved a player coming the other way. Amauri and Momo Sissoko had not come up as suggested makeweights, nor interestingly did Manuel Giandonato, who a few days before had attracted Sampdoria’s scouts and represented a similar prospective value to Biabiany.

January 31’s €2.5m loan for Matri with a future €15.5m fee saw the remaining 50 per cent of Lorenzo Ariaudo willingly given up as part of the deal. Juventus said they could not compete with Inter’s cash-plus-player offer, and whilst the Matri deal suggests this is in part true with regards cash, the fact Juve had players that would have suited Sampdoria, combined with Pazzini’s suggestion that very little was actually done by the Bianconeri to get him, somewhat implies a missed opportunity.

At the same time, the confirmation from this that the club didn’t have the cash – or perhaps the negotiating technique – to secure a target such as Pazzini begs the question, why were resources and time put into pursuing the likes of €15m+ rated Pazzini, Alberto Gilardino, Diego Forlan and Luis Fabiano?

If financial restraints were indeed hampering Marotta’s negotiating, Juve then ignored arguably better low-cost alternatives when Antonio Floro Flores’ deal broke down. Historically speaking, for every Gianluca Vialli and Roberto Baggio Juve sign, there is a Fabrizio Ravanelli and Salvatore Schillaci. Discarded duo Andrea Caracciolo – pushed in Juve’s direction by his club – and Massimo Maccarone – by his agent – are not big names, but compare favourably with Luca Toni and price-wise with Matri.

To chase players out of budget, regardless of how admirably they stick to their terms, is simply naïve business and highlights either ambition not backed up with ability, or a club without the capacity to identify a market of players reflective of their finances.

The Matri deal is significant in showing Juve’s hand this January. It confirms they were negotiating at the price-point of the higher-profile names above, whilst the timing of the deal merely suggests a similar agreement could not be reached with other targets – for example, 10 days prior, Sevilla baulked at a loan offer for Fabiano.

Juve’s approach is financially sensible, but targeting the wrong players could see you go through options 1-9 on a list in the month to then find yourself on deadline day with an over-valued option 10.

With a very public striker search – compare it with Napoli’s work on Victor Ruiz or Cesena’s on Alessandro Rosina – and Matri very clearly not first choice, and combined with a failure to indeed secure a full-back at the same time, no-one has come out of Juve’s January search looking altogether confident.

That was the key,....they were unwilling to spend in the winter....

They basically have taken him on loan and will decide this summer if they will buy....if they send him back to Cagliari, they will have only spent his for 6 months salary

Well Matri basically earned us 3 points today. I didn't watch the Palermo game so I can't judge his performance, but he was absolutely fantastic against Cagilari. 2 great goals, and it looks like we actually have someone who can finish now. You can tell he's an intelligent player who makes some great runs. I'm excited about his signing and want to see how he performs the rest of the season. I'm sure we can all agree that he's an upgrade from Amauri. I don't agree with a lot of the transfers we've made but you can't do much about it now. I can only hope that with all these loan deals we don't sign a lot of these players and spend our money on some useful players in the summer.

I'm not giving up on the CL places yet. There's still a lot of games to be played.

Poor kid is delusional. Watch the Palermo game, he missed two sitters. I expect Matri to score against his former club since he practiced with them all season. He already knows the defenders. Ill judge Matri come May but he wont be worth 5 mil over 3 years.

I doubt its 18 mil straight up. I'm sure there are clauses for how many goals, appearances, and international caps.
I thought the defense looked alright with Chiellini at LB, although it makes me question why we let Legrottaglie go if he had this idea in the back of his head.

Then JI what is the point of posting on a Juventus forum if not to give your opinion of Juventus? I realize most of you have no friends and use this forum to find companionship, but that is not the intention or purpose of soccer forums. It is here so fans can give their opinions on thier favorite teams. Unfortunately, my favorite team SUCKS.

Matri is a good player and was someone I wanted us to buy at some point. Unfortunately, it seems as though we will either waste 3m on a 4 month player or overpay for him to remain here permanently. I don't expect the team to change much next season because of this 'brilliant' transfer strategy where we loan all or players. If we want to keep half our team we will need to spend around 25m.

Get used to losing.

Let me change my opinion a bit: Juve FUCKING sucks! How terrible is this team?? Yea, you beat Cagliari which should be a guaranteed win. Juve can't compete with any team above 8th place. For all you delusional cocks who think Juve are getting anywhere near 4th, think again.
