Inter have a packed fixture list, but Leonardo assures “the Coppa Italia is an objective for this club” as he takes on Genoa tomorrow. The Nerazzurri must play their two Serie A games in hand after the Club World Cup commitments in December.
“I think you can rotate the squad in Serie A as well, not just in the Coppa Italia,” insisted the Coach.
“Almost the entire side is at my disposal now, so it’s not just a physical thing, but also testing out those who until this moment haven’t played as much. As I said, that can happen in any competition and not just the Coppa Italia.
“At this moment, after two victories and with the team improving, we go into an important game. I want the side to leave its mark and learn lessons every time it steps on to the field. This is why we must face every game the same way.”
Inter are eager to defend the title, which helped them complete the Treble last season along with the Scudetto and Champions League.
“The Coppa Italia has seen Inter be a protagonist in recent years and is an objective for this club in the current campaign too,” continued Leonardo on Inter Channel.
“That is especially true considering you can reach the final if you win just three games. They are very difficult encounters, starting from Genoa.”
Inter to tie up deal for Castaignos Feyenoord youngster Luc Castaignos is expected to agree to become an Inter player next season after another round of talks this week.
The 18-year-old striker, who has been likened to a Dutch Thierry Henry, will remain in Holland until the end of the season before joining Inter.
La Gazzetta dello Sport expects the deal to be concluded by Inter's chief technical director Marco Branca either today or tomorrow.
Branca has a meeting scheduled with the player's two agents and looks set to pay €5m to sign Castaignos on a four-year contract.
It's thought that Inter's Colombian defender Nelson Rivas will join Feyenoord in exchange.
It will be interesting to see tonight's CI match against Genoa. First of all ranocchia will make is official debut (against his old club), Mariga should start in a 3-man midfield, which should suit his game better than our old 2-man one and more importantly Cambiasso should start as a trequartista, like those last 15-20 mins. during our last game against Catania. Irrespective of the final result, this should be a very interesting game to watch.
Pienaar just signed with Tottenham and apparently we were in the running for him? He is a decent player, not Inter material though. Probably just media bs.
Too bad we didnt get to see Cambiasso play as a trequartista....that would have been most interesting. Muntari was just a waste of space up there. Eto'o seems to have gone back to his usual self. One has to really question whether he really cannot get along with Milito up front, since when he plays alone, he is 3 times as effective and Milito isnt giving us much lately.. Ranocchia had an ok game. He should have been sent off on the penalty foul, but the ref decided differently. Other than that he didnt really slip up, considering that this was his first match..
When Mourinho started out last season he played a diamond formation too. How did Eto'o do then? I don't seem to recall his performances. Anyway, I think the upcoming games against Bologna would be a much better one to decide since Catania was his first game after the suspension so he hadn't played in a competitive game for a while.
Clamoroso a San Siro.
Milito hasn't been performing all too well this season, although he has showed some signs of brilliance. For eg that setup for Zanetti's goal in the WCC. Question is though, if rumours are true that Mou wants him at Real, would we let him go? In saying this its all rumours and haven't heard much about this of late.
Frank, we will not be blacked out due to the new FPF rules in 3 seasons time. Paolillo is the current right hand of Platini in these new regulations so I'm quite sure he knows what he's doing. Surely though, to reach that goal, we will have to face repurcussions in terms of competitivity and transfer market since we'll have to keep on selling our most prized assets, like we did last year with Ibra & this year with Balotelli (and supposedly Maicon).
MI, Real Madrid will not pay for over 30's. If they'd be interested, it will only be for a relatively low offer. Mou is not an idiot and won't have his new club spend some 30M on a 31 year old striker who's been having an injury plagued season.
On another note, I've been reading a lot about Julio Cesar lately. It seems that he would not object to a move and that we are currently worried about his physical conditions, considering he's had 3 muscle injuries in these past 6 months. I've read that we are wrapping up Viviano's second half from Bologna for next season. Now if we are offered a huge sum for JC.....say 30-35M, then yes I'd be all up for that, but no one spends much on a goalie, so I dont beleive an offer within that range will ever reach the club. Though choice..
Now that you mention it, I have heard a lot of talk regarding the Viviano deal and considered it strange that we'd have 2 no.1 goal keepers. JC probably wouldn't mind a move abroad. He has won everything here. I hear that Manure and Arsenal are looking for new goalies...
Yeah I know its 3-4 years away but still 200m is a lot of money. I am not surprised that we are making such losses but I didn't think we were the second club in the list with the most problems. I thought we were better than the likes of Chelsea. One good thing about the FFP is that any investment for the future doesn't count under these losses. So, we can still invest in a new stadium and it wouldn't count. I think a new stadium is definitely a place where there is a lot of potential to make more money. Are we making any progress on that?
Arsenal will never spend anything near to 30m for a new player, leave alone a GK. Man U is our only bet. Maicon is slowly regaining his top form, if he continues like this probably we could sell him for 25-30m.
The problem with JC opting for a move to Brazil is that we wouldn't make much money out of it. Hence Manure being the best place. If Arsenal see the value they might spend the money but as you said, it is highly unlikely.
Inter 4 - 1 Bologna Stankovic 20 (I), Milito 30 (I), Eto'o 63, 72 (I), Gimenez 77 (B) Stadio Meazza
Dejan Stankovic, Diego Milito and a Samuel Eto'o brace tore Bologna to shreds in a 4-1 triumph.
Julio Cesar, Wesley Sneijder, Coutinho and Walter Samuel were still out of action, but Leonardo hoped to maintain his 100 per cent record on the Nerazzurri bench. It was a special game for Javier Zanetti, who equalled Beppe Bergomi's record of 519 Serie A games in an Inter jersey. Bologna saw another two points docked from their tally this week due to the financial irregularities that saw them risk bankruptcy before Christmas. Vangelis Moras, Morleo and Mutarelli were absent.
Within the first five minutes Diego Milito should've scored when Lucio nodded a long ball back across the face of goal, but El Principe could only nod on to the upright from point-blank range. Emiliano Viviano then smothered a Samuel Eto'o snapshot.
Ivan Cordoba had a nasty clash of heads with Marco Di Vaio, but was able to continue with a large bandage.
Inter broke the deadlock by pouncing on a Gaby Mudingayi error. The midfielder passed the ball straight to Eto'o in midfield and he sparked the run, shaking off a defender to roll a diagonal ball into the path of Dejan Stankovic. However, replays suggest the Serb was offside.
A Gaston Ramirez effort was charged down, but Bologna shot themselves in the foot for a second time by giving the ball away cheaply in midfield.
Milito sprung the offside trap from a Thiago Motta ball over the top and managed to squeeze his shot over Viviano from a very tight angle.
Bologna were still in it too. Di Vaio brilliantly trapped a long Diego Perez pass to leave Lucio stranded and unleashed a powerful finish that stung Luca Castellazzi's outstretched hand.
Moments later Di Vaio forced another corner with his curling free kick, again palmed round the near post.
Bologna had a great chance after the restart, as Perez waltzed away from two defenders and placed the through ball on to the feet of Henry Gimenez, but the substitute blasted over.
Another Di Vaio free kick skimmed the upright with Castellazzi scrambling across.
Inter seemed to be relaxing into their lead and not pushing Bologna, but awoke with a moment of absolute magic. Eto'o went down the left flank, exchanged with Milito's backheel and curled a snooker-shot into the far bottom corner with the inside of his right foot.
It should've been 4-0 soon after, but Thiago Motta scuffed the volley well wide in acres of space.
The fourth did arrive with a wonderful Eto'o free kick that curled over the wall and into the near top corner, completing the Cameroon international's brace.
Castellazzi did very well to keep the clean sheet with a fingertip save at full stretch to turn Gimenez's daisy-cutter round the post. However, he did concede from the following corner. The ball ricocheted around the box until Gimenez smacked the finish under the bar from seven yards. It means Inter are yet to keep a clean sheet since Leonardo took charge.
Di Vaio was the last to give in and his powerful volley whistled over the bar. Leonardo gave Zanetti a standing ovation with his substitution in the final minutes. Both sides had timid penalty appeals for Davide Santon and Miguel Angel Britos challenges on Antonio Busce' and Milito respectively.
Eto was on some form last night and looked simply unstoppable. If you can keep him in that form in doesn't matter who else you sign or who is injured, you could just play Marco Materazzi and his entire family behind Eto and you'll probably still win the league. He was something else, he seems to be playing with unreal confidence at the moment.

Ghana midfielder Sulley Muntari is looking to end his spell at Italian giants Inter Milan. The Italian club's technical director Marco Branca revealed on Italian television that the 26-year-old had put in a transfer request. Muntari was a near automatic first choice under Jose Mourinho in his first season at Inter.
However, Muntari lost his place in the team last season and has featured even less this term. The former Portsmouth player has made just 12 appearances in all competitions, mostly as a substitute.
"He has made himself available to leave as long as a team wants him and is interested in him," Branca said on Italian television. "He's a lad who is close to us, he's a good person even though sometimes he expresses opinions typical of someone who wants to play."
