Nesta has become the intense focus of the club's plans to offer a number of players an extension. His current terms expire in June, but there are no worries for the 34-year-old.

Il Giorno reports that he will be the first to be offered a new contract. Massimiliano Allegri sees his importance in the squad as a leader and a role model to younger players.

Reports had suggested a return to former club Lazio, who are looking to expand their squad parallel to their good form in the league this season.

However, his experience and commitment will be rewarded by the Rossoneri, with talks expected to open up in January, despite the club claiming they would hold back until spring."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will step aside and allow Ronaldinho space to convince coach Massimiliano Allegri, who said he may start for Milan against Ajax if he passes a late fitness test.

Abate has improved alot and Im really happy with his development this season, he's established himself as a very competent RB and he's still fairly young so there's potential for more, I'm not saying he'll be an all conquering world-class RB or anything like that but it's unrealistic to expect all 11 positions to be covered by players of such caliber, not gonna happen...don't forget he's a club-grown player, this is really valuble asset for us as the UEFA rules kick in, so all in all I don't think RB is a major priority right now if he keeps it up, but we'd need a world class LB (Conetrao) though

David Luiz might be good but I'm not comfortable with an all-Brasilian CB.... that said, we'd need a top CB to take over from Nesta eventually in a couple of years' time, maybe we should get somebody in the 23-27 age category with potential to groom him for an eventual starting spot

man, i agree about the all-brazilian CB pairing, it just goes against all tradition. the problem is most of the italian defenders today suck. i honestly think that no current italian defender is playing at a better level than nesta, so it's great news to hear that the management are putting his contract renewal on the fast track. but who knows how much longer he'll last, but he is absolutely phenomenal to watch.

Nothing To Play For

At one stage it appeared that Milan are in danger of not qualifying for the second round of the Champions League but with eight points from five matches the former Italian and European champions have booked their place in the Round of 16 last month, defeating Auxerre 2-0 on Matchday 5 to secure their place.

The Rossoneri are second in the group and come what may they will finish as runners-up, as group leaders Real Madrid have an unassailable five-point lead over them. Tonight's game is pretty much meaningless for them, although they will like to stretch their eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Milan are in great form too as at the weekend they defeated Brescia to go three points clear at the top of the table in Serie A and coach Massimiliano Allegri wants the Diavolo to continue their momentum.

Reading Maldini's post that there's no young great Italian defenders, I was going to mention Ranocchia as well, who I think is good enough to step up and fill Nesta's boots.

Yes, to be fair to thredzo I'm not sure missing a game because your neice is coming to watch you perform in the All Ireland ballet finals is quite the same thing as missing a game because you've got food poisoning from over-indulging on mouldy duck.
