Ed, think back to last year. Playing Fiorentina was the match which began our fightback and we need more of the same, but this time to continue the turnaround!


On a day when once again there is little more than "snippets" of gossip as from the Romagiallorossa article on the tifosi romani who are divided on whether Roma is better or worse without Totti and concludes that "no-one is indispensible," from LaRoma24.it who tell us that our mister has set a new Serie A record by using 25 players in the "turnover," and that today is the last day for non-legally binding offers to be made for buying our club, I decided to include an excerpt from Signor Claudio's Press conference.

Also, he told us that Totti will start against la Viola which I think we all realised would happen, despite certain fans' cries to continue with a front pair of Marco and Mirko...he continued by saying he has much faith in Leandro Greco's ability to progress, and he was evasive over his contract which as we know expires next June. He was also evasive over Adriano moving on in January. As for his quip about going personally to pick up Carletto Ancelotti from the airport if he is to be the next Roma coach, I think the phrasing says it all. Carlo isn't yet ready to lave London and Claudio isn't a taxi driver...

We knew when he came to us that Ranieri's talents were and are in nursing sick teams back to health, and in laying the building blocks for someone else to apply the finishing touches to. In fact I have come to regard him as il dottore rather than il mister because it is a much more fitting description. Again I will say it's possible for him to lead us to a Scudetto. (though not this sesh!) Serie A is not strong just now. Beyond that, no! "Con lui, niente Champions per noi!"


No Cassetti, no Juan and no Pizza, but Monsieur Jeremy is there. I think we will again see the "lopsided" 4-4-2 against la Fiore:

I reckon that De Rossi guy may get a run, Frida. Word on the street earlier in the day was that Borriello might start from the bench in a 4-2-3-1/4-3-1-2.

Pizza's less of a loss when Menez is playing, especially if Ranieri plays him through the middle. No surprise for me that Menez - from all reports - had a great game against Basle. Pizza was also less of a loss against the 'merda since in the derby it's often better to substitute quantity for quality. Menez is so much more comfortable when he gets to pick up the ball early and when he doesn't have to play quite so directly as he's asked to as a wide player. So far it seems I was way wrong on Rosi, alas, though there's time for that to be amended, I guess. On Motta and Menez, though, I'm to the good.

Some interesting points...

I had thought for some reason that Fiore's Vargas was still out injured. I should have checked on that before posting Rosi as our RB in my proposed starting XI! For all Cicinho attacks better than he defends, he is better equipped to try to cope with Vargas who would torment Rosi mercilessly all evening, were Ranieri to select him. The second reason for not choosing Rosi is of course what has very probably turned il mister against him for now, the fact that under concentrated pressure he could not cope. He will need to be carefully and thoughtfully brought back in against lesser opposition. I think as I say, he can be more than Motta ever will, but he needs to have his confidence kept up.

Although Mutu played well on Saturday, he is still finding his way back. There is no Montolivo and of course there is no Jo-Jo. Marchionni isn't at his best. Provided we make sure Gila doesn't get service we can forget about him too. The one surprising factor is, I don't see young Adem Ljaic listed anywhere as a starter, he seems to be named as only a sub. Although he can be erratic with his finishing I know I'd be tempted to open with him if I was Mijhailovic. Something more to be grateful for if he is left out but something tells me we will see him at some point!

I sense another narrow but non dramatic win for us.

While names like Volk, Amadei, Manfredini, Da Costa, and Galli are just that, names from the distant past, I well remember my generation of Pruzzo, Völler, Di Bartolomei, Giannini, Balbo, Delvecchio etc. Palizzi's reason for posting this will be because Mirko Vučinić has broken his way in to the top 15 with 39 goals. It's been pointed out since the week end that Vuci has in no small way helped drag us to where we are in our recovery. I will add I am starting to realise why Vuci is the Montenegro national team captain.

This Totti discussion in Italy is ongoing. Amongst the reputed 50% of tifosi romani who are now saying it is time for him to start playing a lesser role, I notice they seem reluctant to suggest Danino De Rossi is ready to assume the captain's role on a much more permanent basis. Staying on De Rossi, I thought it possible Ranieri might consider saving him for the Juve match and trying to capitalise, as it were, on Simplicio's improving form. But we may see our little, now less fat man, as a sub.

Literally taken, just to be going on with, we are talking about an "Old Wives' Tale" from way back as a cure for various ear ailments and infections including temporary deafness through a wax blockage. Urine was poured into the infected ear from a container. I'm sure we all realise it is not a direct application via the penis though I rather think at this point Gio would be tempted to make an exception of that fact with our professore as the recipient! I've seen authors Mario Puzo and Albert Goldman, among others, make brief references to this "cure" in their written works. It was apparently as common in the southern regions of the USA as it was in Italy and other Mediterranean countries. In some Arabic countries too as it is known certain hardened Bedouin placed great value on piss for healing purposes including drinking it, just to stay alive in the desert. Recycling through necessity...
