(ASCA) - Roma, 2 nov - Una giornata di squalifica e 20.000 euro di multa: questa la punizione stabilita dal giudice sportivo Gianpaolo Tosel a Francesco Totti, per l'espulsione subita durante Roma-Lecce di sabato scorso. Totti quindi, come previsto, saltera' il derby con la Lazio. Lo stop di un turno piu' l'ammenda e' stato inflitto al capitano giallorosso, motiva il giudice, per aver ''colpito con una manata al capo un avversario e per aver inoltre, al rientro negli spogliatoi, dopo la conseguenziale espulsione, tenuto un atteggiamento platealmente aggressivo nei confronti di un calciatore avversario, senza ulteriori conseguenze per l'intervento dei presenti: infrazione quest'ultima rilevata dai collaboratori della Procura Federale''. Oltre a Totti sono stati appiedati per un turno altri 9 giocatori: Biava (Lazio), Dzemaili (Parma), Olivera (Lecce), Tavares (Chievo), Boateng (Milan), Colucci (Cesena), Milanetto (Genoa), Natali (Fiorentina) e Pozzi (Sampdoria). Now here's a thing...Mexes was training as nomal today, according to Romanews and if Ranieri wants to rest Juan, then Philou and Nico could form our central defence this evening. How likely does that sound? Not very, I'd say, especially given their list of the probable starting XI where, as I thought may happen, Cicinho is included and as Tommaso thought, Simplicio is placed alongside De Rossi. Marco Borriello is not even on the bench but Okaka will be. It is indeed to be a 4-2-3-1:





There is a discrepancy regarding our panchina listing from some sources but this seems the likely one with Okaka replacing Borriello.

Totti is making noises along the lines of, as he is unable to play the derby he will make up for that tonight, and Simplicio refers to this Swiss trasferta as his big chance! Let's hope so!

Well, lucky enough there to take the lead, we were a bit of a shambles early on and looked very disorganised at the back. Fortunately we made the breakthrough at the right time and it seemed to take the wind out of them and spur us on. Hopefully now we don't make any silly mistakes and don't concede.

Jesus! At times that wasn't for the faint hearted. But as Ed says the 3 points are what matter. Happy for Greco to score in his Champion's League debut!

Roma grabbed a precious 3-2 victory in Switzerland, as Francesco Totti, Jeremy Menez and Leandro Greco were on target.

The Giallorossi desperately needed a victory after their shock 3-1 home defeat to Basel a fortnight ago. Francesco Totti recovered from a shoulder injury to start, but Marco Borriello was benched in a return to the old 4-2-3-1 system. The injury list included David Pizarro, Rodrigo Taddei, Matteo Brighi, Adriano and Philippe Mexes.

Straight away Totti threaded through for Jeremy Menez, but he hesitated and eventually fired over from a tight angle.

At the other end Julio Sergio did very well to smother a Huggel snapshot from point-blank range, as the cross from a set play was knocked down in the six-yard box.

Juan needed a crucial sliding tackle to close down Streller and Shaqiri blasted over from a promising position, but it was Roma who broke the deadlock after 17 minutes.

Mirko Vucinic only managed to knock down Totti's long pass before he stumbled, but got it into the path of Menez for a precise right-foot strike from the edge of the box.

The two combined again moments later, but this time Menez wasted it by shooting wide of the upright. Roma claimed he had been pushed when pulling the trigger.

The referee pointed to the spot when John Arne Riise was brought down by Stocker, who did a rugby tackle by pulling back his shorts. Totti stepped up and managed to bury the penalty despite Costanzo getting a hand to it. It was his first goal in all competition since May 9.

A corner was pulled back for Riise to drill wide with his left foot from 25 metres out, as Roma now seemed in control after that initial 20 minutes under great pressure.

Inkoom's cross from the right found Streller, but the header was straight at Julio Sergio. A Vucinic shot was deflected to whip just past the post on the stroke of half-time.

Streller was incorrectly flagged offside, but had horribly scuffed the shot from Shaqiri's cross anyway. Yapi Yapo also mistimed his finish from a short defensive clearance.

Shaqiri went for goal himself and drilled off target and Streller's header was comfortably gathered in the arms of Julio Sergio.

Yapi Yapo was more dangerous when he latched on to a poor defensive clearance, as his volley whistled just wide of the upright. Huggel also threatened, as his missile skimmed the top of the woodwork from 25 metres.

Basel were piling on the pressure and had a stroke of luck to get back into the game. Stocker's cross from the left struck Nicolas Burdisso and went looping into the air, cutting out goalkeeper Julio Sergio so that Alexander Frei could tap in from close range.

The home side was now confident and passing the ball around with pace again. They went very close to cancelling out that original 2-0 lead completely, as Stocker crossed from the left for Streller, whose left-foot shot cracked the outside of the post.

However, Claudio Ranieri made an inspired substitution. Greco replaced Menez and within two minutes had scored Roma's third goal. Another substitute, Marco Borriello, surged past two defenders and seemed to be brought down, but still managed to roll it into the path of Leandro Greco for an angled drive.

Nicolas Burdisso was replaced by his brother, Guillermo, due to muscular problems.

Basel would not give in and again reduced the gap. Juan charged down Streller's shot, but Shaqiri pounced on the loose ball for a left-foot finish from a tight angle.

Julio Sergio was at full stretch to capture a Yapi Yapo long-range effort, while Abraham turned wide from a corner. Basel ended the game with 10 men, as Stocker let his nerves get the better of him and went through the back of Totti for a second yellow card.

Ranieri: 'Roma are like boxers'
Claudio Ranieri feels Roma achieved something remarkable in Switzerland in the middle of an injury crisis. "We're like boxers."

“The first half was excellent after Basel’s good first 20 minutes, then we took control of midfield,” he said of the 3-2 victory.

“In the second we should’ve controlled the tempo, but instead we suffered as Basel opened up the play and we were unable to hit them on the break.

“We were unable to get Jeremy Menez into possession. Their central midfielders were pushing forward, so I thought we’d risk it and leave the flanks to them while hitting them through the middle. It worked.

“We suffered tonight and we won, that is the important thing. I always have to put in quality players and the more problems we cause for our opponents, the better, but at the same time I have to find a balance.”

The Giallorossi began to run out of steam towards the end, but Ranieri argues it is a fitness issue.

“I am forced to train my players on match day. I had four who played and have not trained since the Lecce game. Some have been going on like this for some time, licking their wounds and forced to carry on.

“At the moment we are like boxers – we must cover ourselves when needed and put in the punches when we have the chance.”

It worked, but we did concede two goals as a result. I was wondering why he had us give up the flanks considering Basel seemed much more threatening playing on the wings. Or was it because we conceded space on the flanks that Basel looked good?

As for the overall game, I thought we were somewhat fortunate to get away with a win. The defense looked shaky, and for long stretches we couldn't control the tempo. Basel were a constant threat pretty much from start to finish. Pizarro would have made a massive difference today, and again I think we saw how this team can struggle to take control of the midfield without him. Vucinic, Totti, and Menez all played really well together. Riise, Menez, and Vucinic all made runs at the defense, and Totti did well to pick them out when he could. Oh and to steal maro's line, profonditá, profonditá, profonditá! It's amazing what some running off the ball can do for a team.
