I like the prospect of Mexes-Juan (though I don't quite believe it); I'm less enthusiastic about the projected midfield four. Surely it's going to be Taddei down the right and Menez down the left. Please, Claudio. Pretty please.
Look, see, you scared him away you fuckin dickhead. We miss you, Stef. The real you. We shall see him again, one day, my friends. We shall see him again.
Seriously though, what is the advantage of having Baptista on the bench instead of Okaka (assuming both are equally fit)? With Vucinic out, I'd think Okaka's ability to make runs would provide a usefual option to open things up from the bench.
Edzo, if you want the real me, look in the shoutbox.
"To fight the United States is like fighting the whole world. But it has been decided. So I will do my best. Doubtless I will die." - Isoroku Yamamoto
It has to be Mexes-Juan, for me, at least, and if not I have serious doubts about Ranieri's future at this club. Not purely because he's a tinkering fuck, but because its about selecting the players on form. Mexes is on fine form and is in his element at the moment back playing regularly with France and looking like the Philippe of old, and if he's not playing tomorrow it signals the end of his Roma career, I think, something which I would be very disappointed with. I agree, too, that if Menez is fit he has to start. Okaka, also, should be on the bench.
It's also about defensive patterns, of course. Mexes has never looked comfortable under Ranieri because Ranieri plays with a higher back-line than Spags did. Philippe's not the sharpest tool in the tool-box and so knowing when to play an attacker offside and when to track his run is not the sort of decision he makes with particular confidence or accuracy.
It's not the same without a pre-match press conference. However, although we are all, including him, there first and foremost for the football, how interesting it is to a Romano at least, to watch Ranieri informally interviewed on Sky Italia, Friday, assuring us he still wants to win with la magica!
For me there is always a point to hearing him discuss both our club and Roman culture, saying he thinks perhaps Romans can be accused of overplaying the pride in which everything Roman is held, but that's because of its heritage, dating back to the ancient Empire. "That's a characteristic of being a Roman, Roma is Roma and we are what we are," he said.
I had long forgotten he was born in the San Saba district of Roma, and that he had left home 36 years ago in search of fame and fortune. Seeing him speak reminded me of when he first joined us, telling of the thousand different thoughts he had when he was offered the chance to be our allenatore, including how it would be if he failed in his own hometown...and then banishing those thoughts from his mind and gratefully accepting the chance to coach the team in his heart.
He spoke of the way a player can shrug off a negative spell of results by saying, "These things happen in football," whereas with a coach, the responsibility is always there. He continued by insisting that to him, emotional pressure only affects him when he is not working, despite the accusations of some that he appears nervous and stressed because they fault find some of his decisions.
He mentioned his initial reaction on the first time he stepped out onto the pitch as Roma coach at the Olimpico. He had to set his face to mask all the emotion he felt while listening to the Antonello Venditi "hynno!"
His response to the accusations that he is a capable manager in terms of building the foundations of a winning side and has had to then watch other coaches lead those teams to success. Does that anger him?
I smiled at his reference to the way the English, when progress is slow, use the saying: "Rome wasn't built in a day!"
He spoke of his belief in karma or destiny, and of how though he hasn't been able to end a specific work, there is always a stimulus to the building process. I noted his use of the word "Patience!" Like he knows his day will come.
He spoke of the differences between coaching in Italy and elsewhere, at the way when a match finishes in Italy, the work starts all over again. The "suffering" process and how in Italy it can be ugly, particularly the football discussion programs which are designed around creating an audience, not of the love of the game... and of the way every spoken word by a coach can be used against him.
Finally, he was asked if he believed his finest hour is still to come...
"Always. That is the stimulus of every man, that he should want to always win, should dream of winning of more, should realise the dream, should want to reach his Utopia. I want always to win and want to obtain always more than I have done."
-------------------------------------------------
The content here is all about being a Romano. If you don't feel it you can never know what it really means. After this interview I don't know that I will happily ever adjust (though I may need to) to the thought of a non Roman running our club, in ownership or team management and that takes into consideration my full awareness of the implications of that statement, of our urgent need to reverse our fortunes.
The pride I felt and remembered goes way back, long beyond Ranieri, and it made me all the more resentful of the recent disparaging remarks by certain people connected with il calcio.
Today even if it it is ugly because of our weakened resources, Roma MUST prevail.
What was Ranieri waffling on about? I'm worried about the game tonight (but I am going to miss it, unfortunately), would a draw be a good result for us here, do we think?
On this occasion I'm for forgiving his "woffle," Ed.
Somehow what he said hit home with me, whereas his outburst of a couple of weeks ago left me stone cold. A draw? Fuck that...I want the three points and I don't care how ugly we look in taking them!
Quite apart from those who are missing, the bummer could be in having key players under par this evening. Taddei, Menez, Pizza...
contrary to some beliefs around here... we're looking wonderous in this outing now that Taddei is back, Pizarro is on the ball and Totti is fighting hard (though not spectactularly brilliant)
A little bit of the commentary from the sb for those like thredzo who are missing the game for some other extraordinarily important commitment:

I didn't know you are in Canada! Bravissimo Brighi! Now let's not blow this!
Things started off brightly for Roma with a few chances, and then our new hero scoring one to open things up. The runs of Taddei, Perrotta and also Brighi helped things immensely, and what do you know, Totti looked better with those players making runs forward (dare I say like the old days?) Okay, not quite, but there were some nice moments there.
Of course, Genoa helped us by having some horrid plays (Criscito, I'm looking at you), and things got scrappy and choppy toward the end, but 3 points is 3 points! Grazie, Roma.
“I won things with that shirt and I know what it means. In no other city does a victory mean as much as in Rome."
I had hoped the fightback would have begun before now. But I won't argue with a 2-1 win. I knew it would be close and none too pretty to watch, taking the entire 90 into account. But those special moments were just that!
Let's hope this time really is the fightback! We need it to be...
Lupa, that's the entire point now...Totti is dependent on those around him making those runs for him. If they can continue to provide for him he can create!
We rock. If we continue to play as we did for much of the first 60 minutes tonight we'll not only walk the Serie A title, I'd venture to suggest we'd also be in a position to compete for a place in the top 10 in the Premiershit. Seriously, that's how good we are. Does the Taddei really make such a difference? And the Perrotta? Interestingly, I didn't think either of our fullbacks got forward as much as I'd expected tonight - Riise did a bit more in the first half, but still not as much as I'd anticipated. Without De Rossi, Vucinic, Menez, with Taddei and Perrotta only just back from injury, with Pizza clearly struggling with injury: a fine three points and not as much of a battle as I'd expected.
On tonight's performance, I think one would find it hard to question the club's decision not to sign Luca over the summer, much as I'd have liked it to have worked out. Totti's still struggling with that position - with the idea that he has to come to meet the ball and then turn before deciding what to do with it. For an eyes-up player it's a slightly perverse role for him to be playing. The defence worries me a bit - there wasn't enough composure there throughout. Nice to see Brighi get the 90 minutes. He's not DDR, certainly, but he's not a bad alternative to an out-of-sorts and tired DDR - if only Claudio would give him a few more opportunities.
I am? I think you may be having trouble reading my tone these days, Avocado. I thought I was being enthusiastic after what I thought was a very good performance and an important three points - an opening jibe at those we all despise, the Premiershite ballsuckers; praise for Taddei whose contribution in the first hour was remarkable, for Perrotta who also played very well, for Borriello whose mobility and movement is surely a better complement to Totti than Luca's style of play could be, for Brighi who I think a number of us think should have been given more of a chance in place of the very tired DDR we've seen too much of this season; a note of caution in relation to a not always quite composed defence and in relation to Totti's role where I gather I'm a touch out of step with the completely enthusiastic assessments of the Italian press. Where's the contentiousness in any of that? I even mentioned Vooch in essentially complimentary terms, though I concede I didn't grant him the absolute centre-stage as I realise I should have done.
