i don't think a loss to bayern in munich is the end of the world for you guys, especially considering that you are in a pretty easy group. beating the minnows is a must, though, and there will be a lot of pressure on the players to get'er done, which time will tell if they are up to. cluj in particular is a must win, since they already have three points. i saw highlights from that game, and they did look dangerous. as long as roma don't underestimate their opponents, there is no reason for a team from a small student town in the north of romania to beat them. if you beat bayern in rome, you may even win the group yet.

I believe - as does Totti based on his post-game comments - it was the intention to play very defensively from the start.

However, to succeed in this way you need to press and when possession is recovered attack with speed. Without players to do so and the appropriate tactical instruction, how can a team attack sufficiently to hope be a genuine threat to the opposition and score a goal, except from a restart?

Ranieri's tactics were highly questionnable because the team grew tired in the second half - understandably so after playing with 10 for so long against Cagliari on Saturday and having to defend for most of this game too - and because there was no way to create danger to Bayern given the tactics and personnel.

MONACO - E' finita come finisce ormai spesso per la Roma dall'inizio della stagione a oggi. Un'altra sconfitta, la terza in quattro partite ufficiali, stavolta all'Allianz Arena di Monaco: una vittoria giallorossa ancora non si è vista da un mese a questa parte. Dice Ranieri: "I cinque gol presi a Cagliari ci hanno condizionato". Già, la Roma porta ancora addosso i segni di quelle ferite dolorose, di quelle reti incassate nel match più duro e faticoso da un anno a questa parte. A Monaco contro il Bayern ha cercato pertanto di spogliarsi del ruolo di squadra che nel calcio italiano deve avere a tutti i costi un ruolo importante. E' venuta a Monaco a difendersi, non ha voluto rischiare troppo, ma alla fine il risultato è sempre lo stesso.

Ranieri ha scelto una squadra molto più prudente, senza Menez e con Brighi, un attaccante in meno e un centrocampista in più. La prima metà della partita è stata noiosa per entrambe, se la Roma ha rinunciato altrettanto ha fatto il Bayern di Van Gaal che giocava orizzontalmente invece di affondare, che non riusciva a mettere in moto il suo gioco intepretato da giocatori di ottima qualità. Il Bayern è finalista di Champions League e pieno di quei nazionali tedeschi (il giovane Muller in testa) che tanto hanno fatto bene al mondiale. Ma nel secondo tempo il Bayern ha cambiato passo e la Roma no, rimasta schiacciata dalla potenza di fuoco della squadra di Van Gaal che ha buttato dentro Gomez e Klose, allargato il fronte offensivo, spostato Kroos sulla sinistra. Praticamente un 4-2-4 che ha compresso e messo in crisi la Roma. Julio Sergio ha fatto il possibile poi è capitolato di fronte a un gol da vero fuoriclasse di Muller, e Klose ha ricominciato a fare gol per il suo club non solo per la nazionale. E' finita dunque come tutti si aspettavano, e anzi, a essere ottimisti, dopo 5 gol presi a Cagliari, prenderne solo due a Monaco, può apparire quasi un progresso, un passo avanti. Paradossale, ma è così.

Claudio Ranieri è ottimista - anche troppo...- forse sta solo aspettando che passi la nottata. Lui continua a vedere segnali positivi, ripete che la Roma c'è e che deve solo registrarsi un po' in questa incertezza se continuare a giocare con un attaccante in più o in meno. Se pensare in grande cioè e soprattutto giocare in maniera coraggiosa, o se piuttosto essere più prudente, umile, mettere a posto ancora una volta - come già fece un anno fa - una difesa che incassa gol in quantità industriali e soltanto dopo ripartire. Ma mentre fervono i lavori in corso, anche le sconfitte e le delusioni continuano, e così polemiche si aggiungono a polemiche, tensione a tensione. Totti - unica sostituzione - è stato ancora una volta sostituito, ma inutile farci processi sopra. Non stava certo giocando bene e aveva sofferto come molti altri

Van Gaal ha pesantemente attaccato lo stile di gioco della Roma nel match col Bayern: troppo difensiva, troppo prudente. E non aveva certo tutti i torti. "La Roma ha giocato come l'Inter in Champions lo scorso anno, in dieci contro la linea della palla. Questo non è il calcio che piace a me. Il buon calcio italiano è quello dello scorso anno della Fiorentina e di Prandelli". Forse ci voleva davvero una Roma più coraggiosa, forse Ranieri doveva rischiare di più e non rinunciare a un fantasista, ma se i gol incassati alla fine fossero stati tre o quattro e non solo due? Senza sfinirsi in dibattiti filosofici sarà bene che la Roma ricominci a vincere presto, se vuol trarsi fuori da questo grosso pasticcio.

Let me first clarify my reasoning for posting the following. I still regard as I have said in my recent posts, our players' performance last night as being pretty fair, given the conditions they were working under. They faced a strong side away from home and had to obey the orders of too cautious tactics. However, on reflection I believe they themselves are due a share of criticism too. I'm not saying the following, some of which echo my own thoughts, and some of which are included in Gio's above post are to be taken as cast in stone matters of fact, rather that they are lines of reasoning worth consideration.

No matter how much I wanted to believe otherwise, the rumours of dissent we heard of are starting to surface and it's just as well there is now a "press silence!"

Perrotta says there is now a lack of enthusiasm. Totti criticises the defensive approach of last night whereas Ranieri maintains the players were too passive and timid...and our principessa again voices her displeasure though it's not clear at just which particular aspect of our poor start this season she means. I don't care for the way our Signor Claudio has been recently, and again today, publicly criticising his players, even if it is with the best of intent, to shame or motivate them into what he terms more aggressive action. I'd hate to think such a seasoned pro would merely speak out to defend his own rep!

I've never liked Louis Van Giraffe, no matter where he has acted as "trainer" and dismiss his belittling of our team. He clearly hasn't seen the attacking football la nostra Roma is still capable of, even if it isn't as speedy as it once was. I do however take seriously the opinion of a true fuoriclasse and former giallorosso, Zibi Boniek...in his playing days named Bello di notte, or "Beauty at night" because he seemed to keep his most special performances for evening matches.

He commented briefly on our transfers and start to the season in Romanews: "The feeling that has left me has been ugly!" He approves of our acquiring Borriello but regards Adriano as being a mistake. He too thinks our players lack "attitude." If Boniek thinks that, then I'm prepared to listen to him. In his many years in Italy, he knows our football and what he expects to see from it.

...and after all this, il nostro mister says that the beauty of football is we get to make a fresh start in just a few days! It looks more to me like this is where he came in last year, the difference being it was probably easier for him to correct the actions of the then outgoing manager than it may be to turn our immediate future around.


Fahad, I read in Romanews a few mins ago that the club does not intend to fine Totti for his remarks of criticism. I guess it's felt enough damage has already been done.

I agree Carlo something does seem to be rotten behind the scenes at Trigoria. I too was dismissing the rumours of dissent in the ranks but when Totti came out and criticised the tactics the alarm bells started ringing. It's not good.
On a different point something that really concerns me is what is happening to DeRossi? I know he is having a lot of turmoil in his life at the moment but he is a shadow of himself. As Chris at the offside pointed out, Daniele looked like he hadn't slept in weeks! I hope all is OK with him.

I think most of you guys should know by now that this is the way it is with Roma. There is always dissent and turmoil. To be a Roma fan is to accept the fact that everything operates on pure emotion. Unbridled emotion has not served us well as a quick look at the history books will clearly show. Passion is fine, if it's coupled with common sense and professionalism. Whether you agree or not with Totti, and despite his greatness, coming out against Ranieri is simply not professional and certainly shows a lack of common sense. Of course this has plagued Totti through out his entire career. Keep the garbage inside the confines of the locker room. When Totti makes a controversial public statement like this, it tends to metastacize because other players use it as a gateway to make their own divisive comments.

I don't know what anyone expects from a Roma fan. We are very emotional and that emotion clouds our judgment. That is fine for a fan, but not for a player. This is exactly where this team was at this time last year. Then Spalletti leaves and Ranieri comes in and Roma comes within 2 points of wearing the shield. I do not know where this team is going but I do know that Totti is the Captain and therefore he should act like the Captain. But let's face it, being leader is not a good role for him. He is one of the finest players Italy has ever produced but he is a very poor leader. We fans can afford to be emotional, passionate, and down right pains in the ass. But the players who get millions to play a child's game have to be better than this. They need to act like professionals and get this thing turned around in a hurry or we are in for a brutally long and painful season.

I completely agree with that. As highly paid professionals who carry a huge responsibility, these issues should be resolved internatlly with, if necessary, the help of the management.

Dopo la pesante sconfitta contro il Bayern Monaco, nella Capitale si vocifera di una vera e propria rottura tra capitan Totti e l'allenatore. Di certo, l'avvio disastroso di stagione non aiuta certamente il tecnico testaccino. Ma l'esonero - spiega l'Agicos - sembra lontanissimo per il bookmaker Stanleybet, che quota a 16.00 il suo esonero. Per il momento, dunque, Ranieri sembra al sicuro dal fuoco incrociato della critica.

Le critiche di Totti al tecnico Ranieri sono condivise da gran parte della tifoseria giallorossa. "Siamo tornati al catenaccio", ha dichiarato il pupone, puntando il dito sulla prestazione della squadra e sulle scelte tattiche dell'allenatore. E, intanto, i confronti con Spalletti si sprecano.....

"Siamo tornati al catenaccio", ha dichiarato un Francesco Totti deluso al termine del match di Champions League perso dalla sua Roma contro il Bayern Monaco. La stoccata al tecnico Claudio Ranieri era quantomai chiara ai più. Una polemica frutto della scelta dell'allenatore, reo di averlo sostituito nuovamente, un cambio che il capitano non ha preso bene, come hanno dimostrato le immagini della telecamera che l'hanno ripreso dalla panchina.

E la vicenda non è finita qui, ma ha avuto un seguito tra i numerosi tifosi di fede giallorossa per i quali il capitano è un idolo. E, infatti, la maggior parte dei supporter si sono schierati dalla parte della bandiera della Roma, criticandolo anche, ma non per le dichiarazioni, quanto per la sua prestazione poco convincente contro i bavaresi. Ma è tutta la squadra a non convincere in quest'inizio di stagione parco di risultati in Champions League come anche in campionato dove la formazione di Ranieri ha racimolato un solo punto in due partite.

Ed è proprio Ranieri quello messo in discussione, perchè ora che la Roma non funziona più, ora che il giochino sembra essersi inceppato, il confronto con il suo predecessore Luciano Spalletti è naturale per i tifosi. Le quotazioni dell'attuale tecnico dello Zenit, che si dimise proprio di questi tempi l'anno scorso, sono in rialzo tra il pubblico giallorosso, a differenza di quelle di Ranieri, criticato a più riprese per le scelte tattiche. La sostituzione di totti, di per sè poteva anche non essere sbagliata, alcuni hanno riconosciuto l'inconsistenza della prova del capitano contro la formazione di Van Gaal, ma è anche vero che le dichiarazioni del pupone incentrate sulla prestazione del gruppo hanno convinto i tifosi. Tutta la squadra ha fallito mercoledì contro il Bayern, ma ciò è dipeso dalle scelta sbagliate dell'allenatore.

La società, nel frattempo, ha imposto il silenzio stampa. Ma domenica contro il Bologna la Roma è chiamata a una reazione, pena il rischio che una situazione già incandescente possa diventare esplosiva.

Lippi and Leo linked with Roma

Marcello Lippi and Leonardo are both being linked with the Roma job this morning after Claudio Ranieri's falling out with Francesco Totti.

Sections of the Italian media don't believe Ranieri will survive after Roma's captain launching a stinging attack on his catenaccio-like tactics.

Roma have started the season poorly, conceding seven goals in their last two games, which have both ended in heavy defeats.

Ranieri's contract has yet to be renewed and sacking him would not be that expensive, although given the uncertainty at board level at the moment that would be an unpalatable option.

However, this morning both Lippi and Leonardo are being talked about as possible replacements.

The Roman Press understands Ranieri will be given four games to turn it around, which come against Bologna, Brescia, Inter and Cluj.
