Benitez 'unhappy' with transfers Wednesday 1 September, 2010 Inter boss Rafa Benitez is reportedly unhappy that the club didn't bring in any reinforcements this summer.
The Nerazzurri were linked with Javier Mascherano and Dirk Kuyt throughout the transfer window, but failed to land both players.
Il Corriere dello Sport claims Benitez is “anything but satisfied” given the club were aware of his demands.
Inter President Massimo Moratti has only ever invested less in 2004 when he bought Nicolas Burdisso and Ze Maria.
The Nerazzurri sold Mario Balotelli to Manchester City earlier this summer in an effort to get their house in order ahead of UEFA's financial fair play laws coming into effect in 2012.
Jonathan Biabiany was their biggest signing at a cost of €4.5m from Parma.
Looking at the positives. This is how much we saved -------------------------------- L'INTER CHIUDE SENZA IL BOTTO.
Traduzione: i giocatori cercati dai nerazzurri costavano troppo in relazione all'importanza in campo.
Entrate:
Jimenez 3,2 mln
Krhin 2,5 mln
Balotelli 28 mln
Daminuta, Filkor e Fossati 7 mln
Burdisso 8 mln
Mourinho 16 mln (10 + 6)
Quaresma 7,3 mln
Totale= 72 mln
Uscite:
I was reading the other day about Gilliani talking on the Ibra transfer and how they missed him the last time around when Oriali intervened. Do you guys think we missed Oriali's input on the transfer market?
I don't know if you guys saw this at any stage, but Roy Hodgson came out and claimed that written into Rafa's contract was a condition that he not come after any Liverpuke players. When asked about this statement by an English journalist, Rafa refused to answer the question (completely and insistently evaded it). Personally I suspect there's truth to it - which would explain the half-hearted nature of your pursuit of Mascherano and Kuyt. Quite what it means, though, I don't know - an elaborate smoke-screen? But for what?
Had heard Hodgson's declaration, but honestly never seen anything like that. Fact is that we did send an official request for Mascherano & Kuyt, therefore there was a approach. I doubt getting further to that approach had anything to do with such an agreement. And Mascherano was sold anyways so I just dont see any reason why they couldnt instead sell him to us, given a better offer.
You've never seen anything like that? Really? It's quite common, I think, particularly when coaches move between clubs within the UK. When the coach is under contract with another club, that club often demands both compensation and that he won't return to his club to poach players.
Its not something which is set in stone, though, is it Tom? I mean its more of a gentleman's agreement between the departing manager and his old club, meaning that there is nothing legally stopping him from buying his old players?
Inter feel start of an icy blast of austerity – Thursday 02 September 2010 11:36
Rafael Benitez must have felt that he had waved farewell to financial constraints and was about to say hello to earth-shattering amounts of transfer funds when he arrived at Inter. However, the Spaniard has found that any transfer business over the summer would be heading in the opposite direction – selling Mario Balotelli to Manchester City and keeping Real Madrid at bay by pricing Douglas Maicon out of the market.
The former Liverfekkin'wankscum manager claimed he was more than willing to stay out of the financial side of the business and just get on with coaching – leaving president Massimo Moratti and transfer chief Marco Branca to actively deal with the recruitment policy.
Having been stung before by Jose Mourinho’s insistence that the club sign Ricardo Quaresma there was a marked lack of conviction to go the extra euro to land Javier Marscherano and especially Dirk Kuyt.
Benitez has quickly found out he is not that special, but then he has not had the luxury of taking advantage of a major transfer coup that fell into Jose Mourinho’s lap when Barcelona jumped at Zlatan Ibrahimovic and threw in Samuel Eto’o for good measure. In fact, last summer could not have gone better with Wesley Sneijder arriving from Real Madrid for a pocket’s worth of change.
Deals like that do not come around that often so in one respect Benitez has been slightly unfortunate, although he could have expected more than the modest out-lay on Jonathon Biabiany, who was on a co-ownership deal with Parma so cannot be counted as an outright transfer. Midfielder Gokhan Inler and Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini also came into the frame late on in the day but when Udinese and Sampdoria, respectively, refused to play ball Inter backed off.
Moratti has never been so expedient – and for once in a quite a number of years Silvio Belursconi has stolen the limelight across town with the arrival of Ibrahimovic and Robinho. There is no secret that the owners of the Milanese clubs have little in common and Moratti’s more prosaic approach is at odds with his AC Milan counterpart’s razzmatazz.
That is maybe why the Mourinho partnership worked: Moratti the steady anchor when his coach became caught up in the stormy seas of Italian football. Now we have two individuals given to mumbling, and Benitez was certainly chewing on his words when the transfer window slammed shut and Inter had locked themselves out of any reinforcements. A quick glance at the latest available accounts for 2009 shows the club in the red to the tune of €154 million pushing the figure to a reported half a billion Euros over the last three years. With UEFA threatening clubs that cannot balance their books Moratti may be beginning to feel the offset of an icy blast of austerity. However, at the same time Benitez is not as if he is looking at a training pitch full of under-achievers and it might be case of the new man stepping up to the standards to his predecessor and keeping to his word that he will just get on with coaching.
Mourinho: I’m still tied to Inter Thursday 2 September, 2010 Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that he is still very attached to Inter and that he hears from Massimo Moratti on a weekly basis.
The Special One left Inter in May after winning a historic treble, taking his trophy haul to five in just two years at San Siro.
Interviewed in this morning’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mourinho said: “I swear I haven’t seen a second of an Inter game, neither a friendly nor the Super Cups. I wouldn’t know what to say.
“But I know their results just like I know those of all the clubs from my cities. But I am now calmer with regard to Chelsea, less involved. With Inter, no.
“The relationship with Moratti continues. We are friends. I am part of his history and he is part of mine. We hear from each other every week.
“However, I am a professional: as always, I had to close a chapter in my life and open a new one, remembering the good and the not so good things without any regrets. When I end something, I end it.”
When asked if he believes Inter will face more competition from Milan this season, Mourinho said: “Papastatopoulos and Boateng are good, Ibra and Robinho are among the best in the world.
“Milan are much strong than last year, but I don’t want to talk about the Scudetto. It doesn’t involve me.
“In Europe, it’s different with Milan. Even when they don’t play well in Serie A, they go and win in the cups like at the Bernabeu.
“They have the psychological status that Inter didn’t possess until last year and that they’ll now always carry within themselves. Milan are really strong.”
No, No, No. No Premiershit talk please. There maybe a gentlemans agreement in regards to this, but one scenario springs to mind. Redknapp taking Defoe and Crouch for Portsmouth back to Tottenham when he went there. Ok, lets end the talk there and back to more important matter at hand, Inter.
Luca Antonelli made his Italy debut this week, but is still bemused as to how his summer move to Inter collapsed.
“I don’t know why the transfer to Inter didn’t go through, but I am happy that I renewed my contract with Parma,” said the left-back.
“Going to Inter is a dream for every player, but I am settled in Parma and hope to end my season there.
“If I had gone to Inter then I probably wouldn’t have played very much. At Parma I have more guarantees.”
There are still strong reports the two clubs will resume negotiations for the January transfer window.
“There are many months to go yet. I am focused on Parma and, I repeat, hope to play the whole season there. But you can never rule anything out.”
It was thanks to his performances with Parma that the defender was given his senior Italy debut as a substitute in Friday’s 2-1 victory away to Estonia.
However, he played the final minutes in a more advanced midfield role.
“I still haven’t recovered from the emotions I felt at that moment. It felt like I had played 180 minutes.
“I got a text from my father after the game and that really made me happy, as he usually never gets involved in my football affairs.”
His father is Roberto Antonelli, a striker at Monza, Vicenza, Milan, Genoa and Roma in the 1970s and 80s.
