Re/journalist Scott Fleming's article as posted by Bagg...
Given that every World Cup produces its share of shock results, I too would gratefully accept any win to take us through the group stages! Once or indeed if we get some consistency then we can start looking to adding the flair provided that's possible with our present squad...
I could fancy Fleming's suggestion of not Quagliarella but Di Natale to the left of Pazzini but we won't know if that works until we see it and of course, if Lippi drops Gilardino. There's not a lot wrong on paper with his idea of...
-----------------Marchetti
Zambrotta--Cannavaro--Chiellini--Criscito
---------De Rossi----Montolivo
Pepe-----------------------------Marchisio
---------Pazzini------Di Natale
Camoranesi perhaps for the secondo tempo and Gila too if Pazzini fires blanks!
Much as Lippi says he never listens to the opinions of Italy's 56 million soccer coaches, it seems he is hopefully going to do so on this occasion and go with the 4-4-2, particularly since Arrigo Sacchi reportedly spoke to him about it...
Ennio, I forgot to respond to your point, "Hopefully Prandelli taking over from Lippi is more of a Bearzot taking over from Valcareggi or Vicini taking over from Bearzot!" As we know, Bearzot had over seven very productive years after which he should've quit while he was ahead, instead of continuing on and failing over Euro 1984, then Mexico 1986. However, he is still a hero to me and 1982 was without doubt The Best Ever!
Vicini as we know had a novel and quite excellent idea. Coach a group of players over a length of time, bring them together through U-21 level, let them get to know each others' play and personalities as well as can possibly be done and groom them to compete for and win the biggest prize of all at senior level, the World Cup. Well, he damn near did it in 1990!
Watching Algeria earlier tonight reminded me a little of the Italia squad from Euro 1988. Algeria haven't just the same skill or class as that Italian group but they have exactly the same youthful enthusiasm and energy I am such a big fan of. Prandelli will hopefully select a squad along those lines for Euro 2012 but he's not the man to lead us to glory. We need Carletto Ancelotti for that.
Marcello Lippi slams Italy strikers before New Zealand • World champions' manager berates forwards in training
• Goalkeeper Federico Marchetti replaces injured Buffon

Marcello Lippi has been in a fiery mood this week, lambasting his strikers in training over their continued shortcomings. The Italy manager, whose team have struggled to score in recent matches, must hope their game can come together when they take on New Zealand on Sunday.
The defending champions opened their Group F campaign on Monday with a 1-1 draw with Paraguay. The match was marked by the Italians' struggles to create clear-cut chances. They were grateful for an error by the Paraguay goalkeeper, Justo Villar, that allowed Daniele De Rossi to score the equaliser.
Alberto Gilardino started the match as his team's lone striker, with Vincenzo Iaquinta and Simone Pepe on the flanks, and Antonio Di Natale came on as a substitute. None of these players has impressed Lippi in front of goal in training.
"If you don't ever attack the area, you're never going to score," Lippi shouted in one session, throwing a ball into the ground for emphasis. "When your team-mate has the ball you can't wait around watching him. You've got to keep attacking or you're never going to score."
Italy have scored four goals in six games and only one of them came from a forward, Fabio Quagliarella. That was in a World Cup warm-up match against Switzerland which ended 1-1.
De Rossi, who is a midfielder, said: "We have forwards who have scored a lot of goals but let's not forget that we won the last World Cup without a Paolo Rossi and nobody complained."
Federico Marchetti, the Cagliari goalkeeper, will win his seventh cap against New Zealand, in place of the injured Gianluigi Buffon. "Buffon and I are different," he said. "He is faster and more reactive whereas I am more muscular and explosive. I believe that to have courage and awareness of your talent is the basis for success. I feel the confidence of my team-mates and I plan to enjoy the game. I am calm and ready to help the team.
Of Italy's opponents he said: "New Zealand are a physical side. They are strong in aerial situations.
"What would happen if we lost? I am not thinking about that. I think only about winning."
Further to the news of the training sesh when Lippi experimented with a very attacking XI, comprised of Vincenzo Iaquinta and Alberto Gilardino up front, Simone Pepe and Antonio Di Natale on either flank, and Riccardo Montolivo and Daniele De Rossi in the central midfield...
He later tried Claudio Marchisio in place of Di Natale on the left flank, pushing the Udinese striker further forward in his natural position where he partnered Gilardino.
Now, according to Rai and Mediaset, our Commissario Technico has decided to go with the same line up as against Paraguay but this time utilising the 4-4-2 system which is not necessarily what those of us who hoped for a change or two in personnel wanted to hear even if we do approve of the change in tactics.
Marcello Lippi's ill-tempered Press conference criticised Simone Pepe, New Zealand elbows and the attacking approach, but “I don't regret my choices.â€
Not much else Lippi could have said, to be fair to him. "Yes, I'm sorry I chose the wrong players for this World Cup, leaving some better choices at home" would hardly be the right thing to say at this stage.
to think that the only reason i want italy to go through to the next round is so that i don't have to deal with any bullshit from italy-haters. this is absurd.
the only good thing about needing to win in the last group game is that slovakia is in the same boat. they need to win to advance. hopefully it will be an open game; and in an open game we can only pray that italy will go through.
World Cup 2010: Italy's Claudio Marchisio Slams Marcello Lippi's Player Choices
The midfielder says that many of his team-mates are played out of position...
Italy midfielder Claudio Marchisio is highly critical of the decisions made by coach Marcello Lippi, saying that the Azzurri are struggling because of out-of-position players.
Marchisio admits that he has been changing roles on the pitch all year, and is unsure of what he is meant to do.
"Here at the World Cup, many players are playing in roles they are not accustomed to," the 24-year-old to TuttoSport. "The coach is making a lot of experiements.
"It is all year long that I have been changing roles, but now have become accustomed to it. Changing so much has caused us to get things wrong.
"There is a lot of confusion between us, but the coach has the right experience to get us out of this situation.
"The team might be demoralised because we thought we could overcome the group much easier," he concluded.
=================
that is the third player, after iaquinta and pepe, to complain about lippi. and that last line says it all, team morale is low, and all the confidence is shot.
With all respect to Tommaso's homeland, New Zealand would have never survived sticking ten men behind the ball as they did if facing a team playing top quality football. We've read all the excuses and explanations since yesterday. I particularly stayed on the Telelombardia channel because they weren't mincing their words about what should and shouldn't be happening with our nazionale! I must be a latent masochist!
If we take Lippi literally, then yes, he didn't leave any world class players at home but that's of course, not telling the whole story as we well know.
I don't just blame our CT however, some players too need to hold their hands up for under achieving, for our now being in this pressure situation. Lippi's original idea to try to compensate for lack of class by utilising teamwork is sound but with his experience he should not have over estimated the ability of certain individuals as he has twice now admitted. As I've also said, it's all very well trying to make the players comfortable with different formations and even playing positions with constant change to prepare them for situations which may arise, but for some time I've been thinking these are also the acts of a man who cannot make up his own mind! We can go on and on but the fact remains this time around, by accident or by design, it's someone else's turn to get their sticky paws on the Cup.
btw, I wish some people would stop trying to liken the here and now to 1982 because of these drawn games. This is nothing like then. As opposed to Lippi, Bearzot had no less than eight genuine fuoriclasse players and all those guys needed was a little more self belief which they got by completely isolating themselves from the outside world and letting their natural quality come out in training...and their new found success wasn't by any means all just down to Paolo Rossi suddenly deciding to score goals!
What also hasn't helped our cause is the fact there is only at this point in time one player in the pesent Italian squad who could have been realistically called up from Italy's two top clubs and that's an absolutely frightening statistic! At this rate the only way forward for both Italy and some other countries is to reinstate the "Italian League XI" whereby an international team comprised of any players, Italians and non, all earning their living in Italy, competed against similar teams from other leagues as used to happen until around the late 1980's.
Disagreed! Lippi's first mistake was to persevere with players who were either past their best, in atrocious condition or not good enough for international football.
Then there is the wasting of 2 years' worth of friendlies (for example, using players like Pellissier and Maresca in a friendly game and then never calling them again) and the Confederations' Cup last summer, which could have been used to try out and decide tactics and players to help form a capable squad.
He operated without logic and coherence, so to blame the players when they have been managed so shambolically is unfair.
