I was at work for the first half so I missed it but I thought we played okay in the second. I didn't expect a win because with the group we have we didn't need to win. Paraguay are good enough to give a lot of teams trouble. If we had a different group with tougher teams then I can understand why some people would be upset with a 1-1 tie, but under the circumstances its a decent result. Hopefully we do our job and get 2 crucial wins in the next 2 games so we can have some momentum going into the knock-out stages. Surprisingly enough I think we'll make a deep run in this tournament even if we have no quality up front.

I'd run something similar to the line-up Bagg posted on the previous page in the next game. I thought Montolivo got more into the game when Marchisio was subbed off because he saw more of the ball. Run the same 4-4-2 with cammo and pepe switching flanks throughout the game on the wings.

IRENE, 16 giugno - In un clima finalmente favorevole, con sole e assenza di vento, l'Italia si allena al Southdowns College. Lippi ha fatto alcune prove tattiche in vista della partita di domenica contro la Nuova Zelanda a Nelspruit. Da quello che si è visto il ct dovrebbe confermare la stessa difesa varata contro il Paraguay nella partita d'esordio degli azzurri in questo Mondiale: Zambrotta e Criscito esterni, Cannavaro e Chiellini centrali. A centrocampo Montolivo e De Rossi mediani, Pepe e Marchisio esterni, con lo juventino spostato in fascia dopo aver abbandonato l'espertimento da trequartista. Attacco con due punte Iaquinta-Gilardino. In porta naturalmente Marchetti vista l'indisponibilità di Buffon. Atlernative possibili Di Natale in attacco al posto di Iaquinta o Gilardino, più facilmente al posto dello juventino, e Camoranesi come esterno di centrocampo al posto di Marchisio.

Gio & Andrew, I too agree that Camoranesi needs to be played. I said so several posts ago, but I think it may have too long and involved a post around general matters so some people didn't feel like ploughing through it to see all the points made including that one...

It has to be said that with his very first ball into the Paraguayan penalty area, Camoranesi contributed more in a positive sense than Marchisio had done in all his time on the field beforehand!

Now let me pose a question: unless it's all been discussed in the Shoutbox, has no-one anything to add to my feeling that luck is not running smoothly for us with first Pirlo and now Buffon suffering? I don't really put too much forethought into omens but if I did I wouldn't care for what I'm seeing.

At least Andrea will definitely return, thank goodness, but Gigi is in limbo and we can now not recall Sirigu.

On my being grateful over the Pirlo case...watching Montolivo and De Rossi being interviewed after the Paraguay match on Rai and taking into account they are about the same age, De Rossi(26) looked an assured young man whereas Montolivo(25) looked a little overwhelmed by it all. I'm not saying he can't be a big stage man but he's not giving the impression he is yet there! I'm obviously referring even more to their matchplay which has much greater value than presenting a bella figura on screen!

I don't really rate Montolivo, but I thought he grew into the Paraguay game rather well.

He started slowly, but by the time Italy equalised he was looking quite assured and was moving the ball around reasonably well.

Once Camoranesi is fit to start, I would probably drop Montolivo and play Pepe-De Rossi-Marchisio-Camoranesi.

Camoranesi didnt do anything special IMO. He just contributed to a change into a much more familiar and adequate formation - 4-4-2 - which ended up having the players play into their normal positions.
And pepe... I dont remember him being actually able to beat his man.... he can run but he does offer little more. This side has 0 creativity because Lippi wanted this side to look that way..
