Benitez calls Zanetti

Inter's new boss Rafa Benitez has called team captain Javier Zanetti to outline his ideas for the club, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

The 50-year-old Spanish tactician was appointed yesterday and replaces Jose Mourinho who left for Real Madrid after winning the treble last month.

La Gazzetta understands that Benitez had a long telephone conversation with Zanetti yesterday in order to get the Argentine on his side.

The Inter dressing room has already reacted well to Benitez's arrival with Thiago Motta and Mario Balotelli publicly expressing their satisfaction with the appointment.

Benitez is still in England closing up his eight-bedroom house in Coldy near Wales. His agent Manuel Garcia Quillon is in Milan today to define the final details of his contract.

Having already reached an agreement, Benitez is expected to sign today, although it'll probably be over the fax machine.

In the meantime, Inter are planning their transfer strategy: La Gazzetta understands they will sell before buying anyone this summer as the club prepares for UEFA's financial fair-play laws to come into effect in two years' time.

Inter improved their accounts last year, but still ended up in the red, requiring Massimo Moratti to step in to redress the balance, something that won't be allowed in 2012.

Douglas Maicon and Diego Milito are the most likely to leave and their sales would fund bids for Javier Mascherano and Andrea Ranocchia.

MILAN - Inter welcomes Rafael Benitez. The Spanish coach signed a two-year contract this morning that will run until 30 June 2012.

Rafael Benitez will be unveiled to the media in a press conference at the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti in Appiano Gentile on Tuesday 15 June at 12:00.

Good that it's out of the way and we can get to work on the transfer market.

I read a translated piece saying Moratti welcomed interest in Balotelli from Man City which is interesting (reliability?). I'm not liking these Kuyt rumors or the ones linking us to Cavani which seem to have some substance to them. You'd think our attack is the last place that needs strengthening, especially with 2 target men already so not sure what we'd do with a third in a 4-2-3-1.

Dejan, when there is too much talk about so many different players....it only means that journalist do not have a real clue of what's going on. And I beleive I read Moratti saying Balotelli is not for sale or somesuch..

Yeah, it's that time of the year. The Cavani rumors come from Zamp who keeps talking about the 23 mil buyout clause and how he wants Khrin in any deal. The Kuyt one's are the least credible and I don't see Branca going for that tbh.

I think the Kuyt ones are quite credible, actually; Kuyt's clearly nowhere near the player Eto'o is, but he's probably actually a better wide-player in either the 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1. I think had Kuyt been at Inter this season, that is, Moaninho might also have picked him ahead of Eto'o whenever Eto'o was being asked to play down the flank. Kuyt's one of those players who do so much for the equilibrium of a side that it frees up other players in all sorts of ways. Kuyt would work his dick off for the team and you might, thereby, get more out of a player like Eto'o in a slightly different role.

I hope our interest in Silva is real. He would be a great addition to squad. Remove some burden off Sneijder and add more unpredictability to this team.

Frank I dont beleive that either. Actually I'm almost certain it isnt. 30M for a player playing a position that's already covered doesnt seem realistic to me.

Silva's not a replacement for Sneijder. Though he can cover Sneijder's role, his ideal position is on the wing and I am sure he is better than Pandev and Eto'o playing in that position.

Right now we just got Balo on the bench if we play the 4-2-3-1. We need someone else to cover in case of injuries and Silva would be perfect.

glen johnson is a good player. he's the best replacement for maicon if he leaves

kuyt is rafa's boy. he starts more than any other player.
