"Milan CEO Adriano Galliani is on duty and ready to work the transfer market into shape by approaching Tottenham Hotspur to open dialogue for Gareth Bale.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Galliani has identified the Welsh wing man as an essential addition for the squad. Bale has impressed at White Hart Lane, and Milan are ready to muscle their way in and lure him to San Siro.

Spurs are said to want around €18 million for their man. But, with finances set to be slashed, Milan are looking to use Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as part of the deal.

However, the striker would have to take a pay cut if he was to join the London-based side.

Gregory van der Wiel of Ajax is also on Galliani's hit list. The Dutch side want €15m for his services though and they are not interested in part-exchange deals."

There is another, more positive, way of looking at the point you're making, threadmund. A club like Milan has a culture (a history, a playing style) which exceeds any one individual. And this principle is built into the running of the club - it doesn't allow for the kind of English-style 'manager' culture in which one figure is essentially in charge of all aspects of the club. Rather, it asks for a coach who is prepared to fit in with, work with those around him - so that when a coach moves on there is continuity and so that the club always remains immeasurably bigger than any individual. Benitez likes complete control - why shouldn't he? Equally, there are plenty of reasons for a club to keep a coach's job to coaching and selecting and helping pick out the right kinds of transfer targets rather than giving him sole control.
