Somebody want to tell me what Adriano is going to do for us? No team outside of Brazil wants him so of course Roma goes after him because we can get him for nothing and his wages will not be much given his past. Am I supposed to celebrate?

Scott Fleming argues that an Adriano move to Roma won’t do either party any favours.

On the one hand Adriano’s prospective return to Italy makes for a lovely story, Serie A’s very own parable of the Prodigal Son. Having slunk out of the country with his tail between his legs following a series of misdemeanours at Inter, it would be nice to see him become a major protagonist with Roma and show off the talent we’ve always known he has.

Despite all his issues you always got the sense he was a good guy, whose problems only arrived as a consequence of his failure to deal with his father’s death in 2004. In his own words: “My Dad always supported me. Without him I started to drown all my problems in alcohol.â€

In all honesty, I think that Adriano is an excellent opportunistic acquisition. He seems to have gotten over a rough patch in his life and returned to form on the field this past season in Brazil. Is he damaged goods of sorts? Of course he is, Roma would not be able to acquire a player of his caliber that wasn't. I don't know that he will turn out to be the Adriano of five years ago, but I do think he has quite a bit to offer Roma on the field.
