I also don't believe Gio will give up on la magica! Longer term Romani such as he and I support Roma, a club which has always been rated fourth of importance at best in Italia through personal choice, knowing full well our club's history of having only occasional success at the top. In choosing to support Roma we accept that since we don't have an influential and moneyed presidente then we have our limitations. Why we put up with it has been said before and is simply because our club has soul, a uniqueness lacking in others on our level and above.

I will continue to discuss transfers involving Tiribocchi, Valdés, Nicolită etc, though I won't deny wishing it was Messi, Iniesta, or even just Di Natale for that matter, all of whom are unfortunately beyond us...and I'm not a latent masochist though to some it may seem so.

On the subject of satellite tv. When I lived in Reading, my apartment was on the top floor and a one metre dish would not go through the skylight. I was advised (correctly) not to go for a motorised dish because our wet climate would corrode the moving parts. So I was obliged to install two big "fixed" dishes, one for Eutelsat at 13ºE to get my Italian channels and a second one to tune BSkyB which in those days was on Astra at 19.2ºE

Because there was a lot more resistance to dishes in January 1990 than there is now, and we were also only allowed one, I had to pick my installation day and time to coincide with my neighbours being out because I did not have planning permission from the local council and would have been denied anyway for the reasons given. It's no fun having to haul two heavy dishes up the side of a building by ropes on a bitterly cold windy day...then drill into the chimney to solidly fix the polar mounts in a place where they and the dishes could not be easily seen from the street. Fortunately I was able to tune them, having a signal meter.

I'm glad I did it though. It gave me access to not just Roma's matches, but a lot of Italian programming, football and otherwise, that I hadn't seen on a regular basis before. But the all important point is, that happened mainly because I was Roma motivated!

But back to business. Juventus and Milan are both going to be in transition next season so unless we buy some real five star assholes in the mercato, we ought to be able to at least stay in contention if not actually winning anything. But let's be frank...in CL terms, second place in the league brings automatic qualification so we haven't exactly failed, have we?

I'm not blind by any means to the fact we were unable to capitalise on Inter's form slump. But had they retained their 9 point advantage over the teams below them, and it must be stressed, as they should have done with their resources, this sense of loss on our part would never have entered the equation and we would all have been content with what we have, given the way many thought our season was over after it had just started last summer!

Sure, of course I want more than that for both Roma's and my own benefit, but unless our ownership changes that's not going to happen for some time to come.

Looks likes Taddei could be close to extending his contract with us, for the same amount of money, the only difference is in the duration, as he wants for four years and we're only offering three (his current contract expires in two months, and he has received offers from Fiorentina, Panathinaikos and some unknown Spanish clubs) :

Ed, Taddei going mightn't be a bad thing. The reasons why don't matter, it's a fact he has lost certain aspects of his game and is not the Taddei we once expected much from. I'd rather see Nicolită replace him than Benayoun as rumours over the past couple of weeks suggest.

The worst piece of news in your post is on il mister and it's not just because he wants some assurance he won't have to spend his immediate future doing little more than "make do and mend" to keep his Roma project as he calls it, going.

It's the knowing such a point would come in the face of having a management with little resources available to do more than make a token attempt over fulfilling his wishes.

Though Ranieri won't lead us to greatness we need him to pull us through the inevitable replacement of the players who have made up the backbone of our team for the last few years. Milan and Juventus will not be the only ones in transition, so to speak.

...and yes, De Rossi and Vuci are both wanted elsewhere. If Pradè and Sensi between them concoct a sale of either or both of those two, they will not be able to find big enough holes in which to safely hide themselves from the venom of la Curva Sud...

Ed, sadly, it's as you say and we are all too well aware of the uncertainty.

It would seem that the rumours surrounding our club not being willing to buy Motta outright from Udinese are gathering pace with the info from both LaRoma24.it and RomaCalcioNews (yet another name change for what once was Romagiallorossa) that Atletico Madrid want him, which would help finance our interest in Candreva.

How I wish we could afford to spend €30mil on a top quality striker but to justify that we'd also need a secondo punto of equal quality to assist him. There's no point in having a big name headliner if the supporting cast doesn't measure up.

No wonder Deini wears that Angelini logo as his avatar. Faint hope springs eternal...which also applies to Sunday's events in Verona and Siena!

After we win the scudetto this weekend, I'd like to see us move for David Silva and Fernando Torres. I think they'd fit into our system very well - and along with Vooch and Menez and the rest allow us to play technical, quick-paced football. If we can't get them, then perhaps Candreva and Rossi. And if not those two, then Corradi and Aquilani.

Whatever else happens, though, we've got to get rid of hairy Motta, Andreolli, and Cerci and make sure there's no chance of seeing Rosi, Curci, and Okaka at the club next season. It'd sicken me to see any of those punks about.

RANIERI E LA ROMA VERSO IL RINNOVO DEL CONTRATTO

Claudio Ranieri e Rosella Sensi si incontreranno presto per il rinnovo del contratto che verrà allungato di altri due anni, dal 2011 al 2013, e ritoccato verso l'alto: il tecnico giallorosso percepirà fino a 2 mln di euro a stagione. Chiara quindi la volontà dell'ex allenatore della Juventus di sposare il progetto della Roma e rifiutare le reiterate proposte della Nazionale.

Ed, now this is interesting in that it is somewhere between the two recent stories of firstly, Ranieri demanding some form of reassurance he isn't wasting his time by continuing in having to make do as best he can with what he has, with the promise of little of significance happening in the mercato, and secondly, that La Sensi has managed to pacify our mister for now anyway.

It's clear that Ranieri is a stronger willed man than Spalletti was and I can't see him being either dictated to or simply "fobbed off." To begin with, I will be surprised if he agrees to the proposed €2mil salary per season for the next three seasons. I'd have thought 2 rising to 2.5 and finally 3 would have been more like the thing, dependable of course on results delivered!

As I already said, I'm also very mindful of the "Project Roma" spoken of so enthusiastically by il mister. I certainly don't want to see that fail but it will if the man can't be given the wherewithall to strengthen the squad and he makes it plain he quite rightly won't hang around to watch it fall apart! Especially as we once again see the reference here to his possibly replacing Lippi after South Africa.

I for one would much rather he stayed with us! Not, I hasten to add, that I want to see Prandelli as our Azzurri CT when Lippi moves on!


An addition on Candreva, another of our supposed summer targets...

I hadn't realised he is only on loan to Juventus from Udinese and it's possible our management are considering using our half share of Motta with them as a bargaining piece rather than seeing what money can be got for Motta from Atletico Madrid being used on buying Mesto as a replacement right back.

I didn't know Candreva is a Romano until I read a little on him. He is actually on loan to Juve from Udinese, is 23 years old, plays in a more central midfield role as a playmaker but can also play out wide in a three-man midfield.

So is he to be a Brighi type replacement since we are offering Brighi to Inter as part exchange on Burdisso?

Re/our coach's other summer wishes...Sorrentino probably won't want to just be second fiddle to Julio Sergio but I can understand our coach's thinking on needing a competent back up! But with the rotation system, if we can keep our European adventure going for long enough next sesh, he'll get his chance! So will Candreva if either happens!
