Paolo Maldini believes Milan need investment if they are to be competitive and remain among the elite in European football. The Rossoneri have implemented a number of cost-cutting initiatives over the last year, attempting to slash the wage bill and sign players on free transfers.

Milan currently lie third in Serie A, but they are all but mathematically out of the title race, as a seven-point gap separates them from League leaders Roma with four games remaining this season.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Maldini said: “We need to invest. It's the only way Milan will stay at the top.â€

Maldini probed over possible tax corruption

MILAN, April 23 (www.reuters.com) - Former AC Milan and Italy captain Paolo Maldini is among 43 people to have been probed over potential illicit practices to obtain favourable tax treatment, investigative sources said.

The Milan prosecutor has concluded the investigation and it is now up to a judge to decide if any of the 43, including Maldini’s wife, should be charged and sent to trial for corruption and abusive access of information systems.

A tax agency employee was arrested last June as a result of the inquiry and judicial papers show Maldini was caught on a phone tap in January 2009 asking the employee to compile a tax check on another man over a property deal.

Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has activated the first major changes by confirming that coach Leonardo will be leaving the club.

Leonardo's future has been thrown into doubt ever since the same Berlusconi thundered "if only those in charge of the team allowed it to play properly," earlier this season.

And, he has now confirmed the club are looking to hire a new coach to replace the departing Leonardo after just one season at the helm.

"Yes he will leave, we are working on a new coach," Berlusconi told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"The new coach? There are talks in place with others. Leonardo has been too tough headed and the team has played badly this season."

Berlusconi then praised Inter after having seen them reach the Champions League final, while his side watch on.

"Look what I have to do now. But, I always support Italian teams when they play in Europe. Inter were good, and it's hard to say this when you are a Milan man."

Leonardo has been linked with the Brazil job after the World Cup. Milan have reportedly lined up Mauro Tassotti and Filippo Galli as his replacements.

Well that sucks. Not that I think Leo is the best coach around or anything like, I'm more sad at the fact we're losing his presence in this Club as I don't see him restored to his old position. He's a great executive/director/scout whatever u wanna call it. One of the few ppl in the current mngmnt who had credibility with the fans. I called it last year that this was a scheme by Galliani to freeze him out as Leo was really in a position to potentially succeed him one day...as a coach he had his positives (picks lineups on merit, more innovative) but also his negatives (tactically naive, which is natural for a rookie coach, and also lost the big games as he was frequently out-coached)...I really really hope he still stays as part of the management but I doubt it

Now Galliani is saying Berlusconi did not say those words. Its not like the Corriere dello Sport to just make up that he said that, so I don't think even the hierarchy of the Milan management know what the hell is going on when it comes to such matters.

yeah, its a shame that we are losing a quality director and a scout. i've jumped off the leonardo coaching bandwagon for awhile now, he had grand ideas but was never able to pull anything innovative at all. we are finishing the season where we expect to finish, 3rd place (hopefully at least).

but where would we have finished if we had pato and nesta? that will be the unanswered question. i'm still pissed that he didn't give albertazzi a start vs. palermo last week, or the week before when fucking oddo was subbed on. its unbelievable how bayern had a 17 year old italian kid playing leftback and an 18 year old centerback (contento and badstuber) for whom they made space for by giving oddo back to us and we relied on him. he was responsible for 4 goals in just about 120 minutes of football.

that is all on leonardo's head.

he was a great guy, but a mediocre coach. and we're probably about to go through a tough patch in the next few seasons. but i'm a milan fan for life. fuck galliani, especially when we're about to spend money on finalizing mancini from inter deal, when he can't even beat his man on the outside anymore. that is classic galliani dick move. that is why berlusconi won't give money to the team, when you have an absolute idiot running the team. berlusconi needs to come back.

Mancini's never beaten his man on the outside. That's why spags played him down the left for us. Under Capello he made runs in behind down the right, but he virtually never did his marker with a piece of skill.

AC Milan coach Leonardo has dropped his strongest hint yet he will leave the San Siro at the end of the season after being criticised by Silvio Berlusconi.

Milan owner Berlusconi is reported to have told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper: "He will leave, we are working on a new coach. Leonardo has been too tough headed and the team has played badly this season."

Leonardo responded by saying: "I can't deny our relationship is difficult. We are different, maybe incompatible."

Leonardo stepped up from his role as Milan's technical director to succeeded Carlo Ancelotti last May when the Italian left for Chelsea.

However, with no previous managerial experience, Leonardo, 40, capped 60 times by his country, has failed to improve an ageing team.

The Rossoneri, who have not won the league title since 2004, are third in Serie A but well adrift of top two Inter Milan and Roma and only four points above in-form Sampdoria who threaten to steal the third automatic Champions League spot.

"The important thing is these next three games," added Leonardo.

Milan crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage after a 7-2 aggregate defeat by Manchester United.

England midfielder David Beckham re-joined Milan for a second loan spell from LA Galaxy earlier this season but failed to have much of an impact before injury ended his campaign.
