Serie A Week 34 - 18/4/10 (14.00 UK) Udinese 1-1 Bologna
Zapata og 3 (B), Di Natale 91 (U)
Stadio Friuli
Antonio Di Natale only grabbed a last-gasp equaliser in stoppages, as Bologna remain in the danger zone.
Neither side was safe from the drop, but while the Friulani were climbing after their crisis, Bologna had lost five on the trot. The treatment room contained the usual suspects Gaetano D'Agostino, Christian Obodo, Dusan Basta and Andrea Coda. The visitors missed Roberto Guana and Mingazzini.
Udinese shot themselves in the foot just theee minutes into the match. A corner kick looked harmless enough, but Cristian Zapata clumsily prodded it into his own net from eight yards, startling the goalkeeper and teammates.
It was almost 2-0, but Martins Adailton just failed to get the ball under control after springing the offside trap.
Marco Di Vaio led the fightback for Bologna, seeing two shots charged down by defensive bodies.
Antonio Di Natale nearly added to his Capocannoniere haul with a free kick that Emiliano Viviano pushed out from the near top corner.
Gaby Mudingayi intercepted a dangerous Alexis Sanchez free kick before Di Natale could tap in from close range.
Mudingayi also proved useful for Bologna at the other end, as his blockbuster skimmed the crossbar from distance.
On the stroke of half-time, Antonio Floro Flores flashed a right-foot strike inches wide of the upright.
Marcelo Zalayeta wanted a penalty when he fell under Pasquale's pressure on the counter, but appeared to simply stumble.
Samir Handanovic punched away a fierce Adailton attempt, but Viviano required a fantastic save on 54 minutes to fingertip Simone Pepe's screamer on to the crossbar.
Daniele Portanova did well to intercept Mauricio Isla's cross before Di Natale could get the decisive touch.
Udinese were unlucky and rattled the frame of the goal yet again, as on 80 minutes Di Natale nodded a Pepe free kick on to the base of the far post and on the follow-up Viviano flapped a Sanchez flick round the other upright.
The Friulani finally got their equaliser in stoppages. Asamoah rolled across from the counter for Di Natale to side-foot home from six yards.
Udinese could even have won it moments later, as Viviano flew to parry a Pepe screamer from 25 metres.
It’s a relegation battle, but whereas Udinese look relatively safe Siena are clinging on by their fingernails. The hosts are 15th, five points clear of the drop zone, whilst their Tuscan visitors are 19th, six points short of safety.
Defeat at the Stadio Friuli would virtually spell the end of Siena’s seven-year stay in Serie A. The Robur would be left needing two wins from their last three games to have even a slim chance of safety, and their remaining fixtures couldn’t be much tougher – at home to Palermo, away to Fiorentina and at home to Inter.
Alberto Malesani has at least ensured that his troops will go down with their heads held high. The minnows from the Montepaschi Arena have put up one hell of a fight and shown some remarkable spirit in recent months.
Against Juventus they came from 3-0 down to draw 3-3, against Bari they trailed twice and won 3-2, and just last week they came from behind to draw in Catania. Sadly it might not be enough, but Malesani has done enough to restore his reputation, and if Siena do make the drop he should be entrusted with the task of leading them back to Serie A.
Udinese’s campaign can be summarised in one word – underachievement.
They should be in contention for the Europa League at the very least, but sub standard performances and the decision to replace Coach Pasquale Marino with Gianni De Biasi mid-season have left them mired in the bottom half. Marino is back at the helm now and has led a revival of sorts, but whether he’ll remain in charge come the summer is far from clear.
For now he’s concentrated on keeping the Zebrette away from the trapdoor into Serie B. They have the five-point cushion and a manageable fixture list in their favour. Nonetheless the pressure will be on if this match is lost.
Udinese’s Gaetano D’Agostino, Christian Obodo, Dusan Basta and Andrea Coda are injured whilst Cristian Zapata and Paolo Sammarco are suspended.
Siena’s selection difficulties include suspensions for Abdel Ghezzal and Aleandro Rosi, as well as injuries to Michele Fini and Francesco Parravacini.
Keep an eye on: Marcelo Larrondo (Siena) – They might not admit it but Siena’s players will already be thinking of putting themselves in the shop window in case of relegation. One of the most sellable assets is Marcelo Larrondo, the young Argentine forward with a style not dissimilar to Amauri.
Last five in Serie A: Udinese (D L W W D) Siena (L D L W D)
t was a 3-1 defeat for 10-man Udinese at Lazio, but Capocannoniere Antonio Di Natale ends his season with 29 goals.
These two sides round off disappointing campaigns, although ultimately they managed to avoid relegation. The Biancocelesti were already on vacation to a degree, as Nando Muslera left early to join Uruguay's World Cup squad. Mourad Meghni, Francelino Matuzalem, Aleksandar Kolarov, Albano Bizzarri, Stefano Mauri and Pasquale Foggia were also sidelined, so third choice goalkeeper Tommaso Berni took the gloves.
Udinese made changes too, as Samir Handanovic and Aleksandar Lukovic sat out bans with Andrea Coda, Paolo Sammarco, Gokhan Inler and Emanuele Belardi injured.
Simone Pepe and Antonio Floro Flores had early efforts, while Cristian Brocchi volleyed over from a poor clearance.
Udinese had far more of the play in the early stages, but it was Lazio who broke the deadlock. Thomas Hitzlsperger has barely made an impact on Serie A since arriving in January, but he scored his debut goal with a thunderbolt from distance that took a slight deflection off Maurizio Domizzi.
Berni controlled a Pepe free kick and Sergio Floccari wasted a counter-attack following Damiano Ferronetti's howler.
Udinese got back into the game with Antonio Di Natale's 29th goal of the season, confirming his Capocannoniere status. He took on the Lazio defence single-handed, cutting through the middle to fire in a low right-foot shot from the edge of the box.
Lazio almost restored their advantage moments later, but Venezuelan goalkeeper Rafael Romo was at full stretch to palm Tommaso Rocchi's snapshot round the base of the post.
Rocchi again tested Romo, who had to rush off his line to deflect the angled drive with his knee, pushing it inches past the upright.
Udinese shot themselves in the foot after 37 minutes, as Mauricio Isla took his protests too far for his shirt-tug on Brocchi and received two yellow cards in quick succession. His behaviour was particularly odd considering this game does not count for anything more this season.
Lionel Scaloni fired wide from a corner and Lazio turned up the pressure, so Pasquale Marino made a tactical switch with Cuadrado replacing striker Floro Flores and Pepe moving back into midfield.
Cristian Ledesma fired just wide of the upright, but it was Sergio Floccari who made it 2-1 on the stroke of half-time.
Floccari gathered from Rocchi in the D and brilliantly placed a powerful yet precise shot into the far top corner with the inside of his right foot.
After the restart Brocchi got Lazio's third, as his left-foot shot from the edge of the box rolled between a sea of legs to beat a surprised Romo at the base of the near post.
Romo beat away a Ledesma free kick that curled over the defensive wall, but it should've been 3-2 on the hour mark! Di Natale sprung the offside trap and sprinted into the box, rolling across for the totally unmarked Sanchez, who incredibly ballooned over from six yards! The goalkeeper was stranded, so this was a truly extraordinary miss.
10-man Udinese threatened again with Cuadrado's low effort smothered by Berni, while Romo caught Floccari's curler.
Lazio also wasted a golden opportunity when Floccari sprung the offside trap on a ball over the top, but fired straight at Romo in a one-on-one. Moments later Romo comically fumbled a weak Mobido Diakite' effort, but managed to scramble it back into his hands before Floccari could pounce.
Diakite' risked a straight red for his terrible late tackle on Siqueira, but got away with a yellow card.
Romo rushed off his line twice to close down Floccari, while Sanchez had two shots deflected.
Udinese 3 - 1 Inter Stankovic 16 (I), Zapata 21 (U), Di Natale 25 (U), Domizzi 69 (U) Stadio Friuli
Leonardo's Inter suffered their first defeat, as Cristian Zapata, Antonio Di Natale and Maurizio Domizzi thumped the giants 3-1.
The Coach aimed to maintain his 100 per cent record since taking over from Rafa Benitez, but the Friulani were on fine form after a 4-4 draw at Milan and 4-2 victory in Genoa. Maurizio Domizzi returned, but Dusan Basta, Gabriele Angella and Damiano Ferronetti were sidelined. Inter missed Julio Cesar, Diego Milito, Wesley Sneidjer, Coutinho and Walter Samuel.
Udinese had the first chance with Alexis Sanchez nodding wide from a corner. There was a comedy of errors in the Inter box, as Douglas Maicon's howler of a clearance looped into the air and Luca Castellazzi flapped it on to the crossbar, nearly scoring an own goal.
However, Inter took the lead with their first chance after 16 minutes. Thiago Motta dispossessed Pablo Armero just outside the box and kept his cool to thread it through for Dejan Stankovic, whose angled drive left Samir Handanovic rooted to the spot.
Considering the Nerazzurri were unbeaten at the Friuli since March 2003, it was a heavy psychological blow for the home side. It should've been 2-0 moments later, as a corner fell to Stankovic in the D for a blistering volley, but Handanovic flew to fingertip it out from under the crossbar.
Udinese equalised soon after. It was again from a corner kick, as Inter failed to clear it effectively, so Cristian Zapata smashed it into the near top corner from 10 yards despite Castellazzi getting a hand to it.
The turnaround was complete in a spectacular start to this match. Antonio Di Natale curled a perfect free kick from the edge of the area that dipped over the wall and into the near bottom corner, where Castellazzi could not reach.
Esteban Cambiasso nodded over, while a Stankovic long-range effort landed on the roof of the net. Handanovic got down well to push a low Stankovic free kick off the line and Samuel Eto'o's strike was charged down.
Just before half-time, both Javier Zanetti and Maicon had penalty appeals during the same move, but the referee waved both away.
Di Natale skimmed the near post straight after the restart, then Castellazzi had to rush off his line to close down Giampiero Pinzi, who sprung the offside trap on a Di Natale ball over the top to get the volley with the outside of his foot.
It was all Udinese, as Castellazzi fingertipped a Domizzi free kick over the bar. However, Inter felt they deserved a penalty when Benatia clumsily challenged Cambiasso.
Armero's wonderful pull-back threatened to set up another goal were it not for Cambiasso tracking back with a crucial interception from seven yards.
Udinese extended their lead to 3-1. Di Natale's free kick was not cleared effectively, so Kwadwo Asamoah knocked it back into the centre for Domizzi's volley. He reacted quicker than anyone and changed direction, springing the offside trap.
They should've had a fourth when Castellazzi beat away a Sanchez snapshot, but Di Natale's first touch let him down on the follow-up from close range.
Moments later Castellazzi had his palms stung by another Sanchez screamer, as Inter showed no real signs of getting back into this game.
Udinese fly into joint third place by thrashing Cagliari 4-0 with Antonio Di Natale's brace and a sensational Alexis Sanchez coast-to-coast goal.
The high-flying Friulani were targeting fourth place and still unbeaten in 2011. Only long-term absentees Dusan Basta, Damiano Ferronetti and Gabriele Angella were unavailable. Cagliari, however, had Davide Biondini and Lorenzo Ariaudo suspended plus Nene' injured.
Michael Agazzi flew to punch an Antonio Di Natale free kick out of the far top corner. He was then at full stretch to get a hand to an Alexis Sanchez angled drive when El Nino Maravilla burst through the Cagliari defence from Isla's pass.
Robert Acquafresca turned on to the side-netting, but it was Udinese who took the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Di Natale's corner was whipped in for defender Benatia's free header from seven yards that looped over Agazzi.
Cagliari tried to fight back, but left themselves exposed and went 2-0 down 60 seconds later. Sanchez gathered on the edge of his own box and dribbled past everyone, including a smart step-over, to waltz round the goalkeeper and deposit into an empty net.
Samir Handanovic prevented the Sardinians getting back into it before the break with a spectacular save, using his instincts to parry an acrobatic Daniele Ragatzu volley from Cossu's cross.
The Friulani netted a third after the restart. Agostini was muscled off the ball in midfield and Sanchez threaded through for Di Natale, whose effort took a deflection off Michele Canini, looping over a helpless Agazzi.
Udinese were unstoppable and went 4-0 up soon after. Di Natale trapped a long cross-field pass and his give-and-go with Sanchez split the defence in two, allowing the veteran to tap in.
Udinese are hopeful that Champions League football next season will entice their star players to remain at the club. The Stadio Friuli is regularly visited by scouts from Europe’s top sides who come to monitor the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Gokhan Inler and Samir Handanovic.
However, with finishing fourth a real possibility now after their win over Lazio, patron Giampaolo Pozzo doesn’t want the squad to break up.
“I hope that Sanchez, for example, stays with us,” Pozzo told Radio Anch’io Lo Sport on Monday. “I think it would be useful for him to stay another year in Udine. He’d enjoy himself and he would be able to taste European football in a calm manner.
“If individuals want to leave then we will have replacements and market options, but it is fundamental that the important players remain.” Pozzo nevertheless admits that it may be difficult to keep hold of their most-prized assets over the summer.
“Our desire is to strengthen the side, but the last word is with the players,” he explained. “Hopefully, if we qualify for the Champions League, then that would give them something to think about.
“However, the ambition of every great player is to play for a big club. “I remember the Parma side of Tanzi who had good resources, but the likes of Gigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Turam and others moved on.”
Serie A Week 38 - 22/5/11 (19.45 UK) Udinese 0 - 0 Milan Stadio Friuli
Udinese saw a penalty saved, so it was a real game, but got the point they needed for Champions League football!
The Friulani need only a point to be sure of Champions League preliminary round qualification, an amazing achievement considering their season started with four straight defeats. Antonio Di Natale was already sure of his second consecutive Capocannoniere title. Dusan Basta and Andrea Coda were the only absentees, as Alexis Sanchez recovered from a recurring ankle injury. Milan were still celebrating their Scudetto, but also waving goodbye to Andrea Pirlo and probably Clarence Seedorf, while Didac Vila received his Serie A debut.
Udinese's record in this fixture is terrible, notching up only six victories, 17 draws and 12 defeats. Curiously, the Friulani haven’t shared the spoils at all in Serie A since a 0-0 with Brescia on February 20, winning seven of the next 11 rounds.
Seedorf was angry at himself after firing an early effort over the bar, then Mathieu Flamini was deservedly booked for a two-footed tackle on Gokhan Inler after 12 minutes.
Di Natale went extremely close too, as his splendid free kick curled over the defensive wall and thumped the upright with Marco Amelia beaten.
Milan put together a lovely team move with one-touch football between Antonio Cassano, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Seedorf, but Samir Handanovic closed it down with a flying intervention.
Alexandre Pato also tested Handanovic, then a Sanchez diving header went over the bar. Danger for Udinese when Cassano's pull-back for Pato was crucially intercepted.
An audacious Boateng volley flashed inches over the bar from a tight angle. Cassano then blasted a dangerous angled drive just past the far post.
Urby Emanuelson replaced Mark Van Bommel for the second half. It was a sluggish start and Milan continued to have more chances, as Boateng came sliding in and just failed to get on the end of Cassano's through ball.
Di Natale wanted to add to his Capocannoniere tally and burst past defenders down the right to fire hard at Amelia's palms at the near post.
Udinese were growing and tested Amelia at the same stick moments later, this time with Sanchez.
Bad news for Milan, as Pato fell awkwardly on to his left shoulder and was stretchered off in clear pain.
Sanchez was constantly causing problems for the Milan defence and eventually earned a penalty when Seedorf mistimed his tackle at the by-line. Di Natale stepped up, but Amelia picked the right spot and fingertipped the penalty on to the base of the near post!
Moments later from a corner Amelia palmed away the glancing Inler header, while Ignazio Abate had to stop Mauricio Isla nodding in at the back post.
Udinese couldn't believe their luck on 76 minutes! Inler's screamer from distance had Amelia rooted to the spot, but it hit the underside of the crossbar and ricocheted on to the upright to go back out! He effectively hit bar and post with a single shot.
The Friulani also threatened when Pablo Armero's shot from close range was practically cleared off the line by teammate Di Natale, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Boateng flicked on a pass for Robinho, forcing Handanovic to smother at his feet. There was the very real risk of losing fourth place if Milan got a goal here, as Lazio were winning comfortably in Lecce. The Rossoneri gave Flavio Roma a quick run-out in his season debut after signing a contract extension this week.
Udinese insist that they have yet to receive a tempting offer for star forward Alexis Sanchez.
The Chilean is wanted by a host of Europe’s top clubs, with Inter, Barcelona and Manchester United leading the chase.
However, after previously valuing the South American at over €35m, owner Gianpaolo Pozzo has warned any interested party to bid what the player is worth.
“We have received no valid offers for Sanchez,” Pozzo stated on Monday afternoon. “The right request has yet to arrive.
“Sanchez is an important player and we’ll now have to wait and see what happens,” continued the official.
“I’ve already spoken with Alexis and his agent and I think they will eventually understand that I can’t give him away.”
Pozzo’s quotes come on the day that his son, Gino, will apparently hold further discussions with Manchester City.
At the end of the 2009-10 season, Granada CF and Barcelona B finished first and second in the third tier of Spanish football, both gaining promotion to Liga Adelante. This past season, Barcelona B finished 3rd and Granada finished 5th.
Promotion into La Liga is almost identical to promotion into the Premiershit. That is, the best two sides in the league go directly into La Liga while the next four battle it out in promotion playoffs. However, there’s one caveat. Barcelona B could not compete for promotion into La Liga because it is part of FC Barcelona and two sides from the same club cannot play in the same league. Instead, 7th place Real Valladolid was able to take on 4th place Elche CF in the playoff semifinals. Elche progressed into the promotion final in dramatic fashion, as did Granada. One Spanish club from Andalusia and one from the province of Alicante, it all seemed so straightforward.
However, when Granada faced Celta Vigo this past Saturday in the playoff semifinal, 6 out of the 11 starters were Udinese-owned. In fact, 11 players on the Granada roster are “on loan” from the Italian club, including starlets such as Dani Benitez (pictured above) and internationals such as Ghana’s Jonathan Mensah. Simply, the majority of Granada’s squad is an Udinese B filled with Spanish flair. Where the rules stopped this year’s Barça B squad from progressing, Udinese used a different country to push forward. And now, after the two matches in the playoff final on Wednesday and Saturday, Udine could essentially have a team in both Serie A and La Liga. An Italian job indeed.
The transformation was a novel one, but by no means are Granada’s fans upset by the Italian presence; they are absolutely loving their rapid resurgence in Spanish football. El Graná are back and the seats in Los Cármenes are filled once again. So how did this happen exactly? Well, let’s start with Udinese owner Gino Pozzo.
In 2009, Granada CF was a club in crisis, both competitively and financially. The club was on the brink of disappearing, despite a rich 80 year history. Gino Pazzo saw a money-making opportunity that would double as a way to develop Udinese talent, and in July 2009, the two clubs signed a partnership agreement so the majority of Granada’s squad would become Udinese-owned, while the Italian club could also send over its reserves and youngsters.
So what are the benefits for Gino Pazzo and Udinese Calcio? Well, the strategy is to use the exposure Granada gets in the Spanish league to showcase Udinese-owned talent that will, in turn, gain value in the transfer market. Pozzo is With Pozzo’s commitment to investing, Granada only seems likely to improve in the future. And Pozzo’s “buy cheap, gain exposure, sell high” philosophy is already working. Just imagine the possibilities for profit if Granada gets into the top flight in Spain.
Will Granada’s success be sustainable? Yes, and legally so. Though Pozzo said, “we put ourselves in Granada because it is a city with a great football potential,” there is also a legal framework that ensures that Udinese’s partnership with Granada is a permanent one. But amongst this clever system, one thing remains clear: if Granada are promoted the boys by the alhambra will not be the only one reaping the rewards.
But is this the start of a larger trend? Udinese’s plan is profitable and it has revived Granada. As a result, both parties are happy. Real Madrid have a notable connection with Getafe, but it’s not quite as imposing as this. Should Barcelona abandon Barça B, take over local side Catalan side Girona FC and make a run for La Liga? Should Arsenal impose its eye for talented youth by rebuilding Nantes in Ligue 2? Is this the future of relationships between the ‘haves and have-nots’ of football?
I had no idea that Udinese had this little pool of talent over in Spain. I wonder if the agreement allows them to bring some of those guys in to replace the likes of Sanchez, should he depart.
“I won things with that shirt and I know what it means. In no other city does a victory mean as much as in Rome."
Again, for Sanchez despite all the rumours, the latest that he's off to Barca for €40m. What are the chances he stays at Udinese for next season? I would like to see him stay for one more season at least and lead them in the CL (unless he comes to Roma, of course).
Pozzo is suggesting today that Inler might stay with Udinese, but I'd imagine he's just trying to get Juve/Napoli/Inler to hurry up and conclude a deal.
