Calciopoli Watch: FIGC Ordered Refs Not To Help Juventus, Milan Spoke To Collina, Fiorentina Consider Legal Action Goal.com rounds up all the biggest Calciopoli stories of the day...
The latest shocking revelation in relation to the on-going Calciopoli trial in Naples has revealed that the chief of Italian football at the time, Franco Carraro, issued orders that referees must not help Juventus. And, Milan have been accused of speaking with referees, not just designators.
The latest call to be transcribed from the evidence obtained by Luciano Moggi's legal team at the trial shows how the Italian FA (FIGC) ensured Juventus were not helped during Calciopoli.
In fact, it was the then FIGC president Franco Carraro who called referee designator Paolo Bergamo telling him that Juventus were to be sent a referee who would not help them during a game in the build up to a Lega Calcio election.
It's a sensational revelation which suggests the then chief of Italian football used his power to manipulate games for his and the authorities own agenda.
And it has led to some claiming the whole Calciopoli process in 2006 should have been thrown out.
Here is a transcript from one of the calls shown live on the Diretta Stadio programme on television channel 7Gold.
The call involves Bergamo and Carrarro. The head of the FA (Carraro) asks for Rodomonti to be sent for the Juventus game, but warns Bergamo of the consequences of any mistakes that could favour the Old Lady.
Carraro: Please I recommend you ensure he [Rodomonti] doesn't help Juventus because it's a very delicate time for us at the Lega. Please, ensure it's an honest affair, but make sure there are no mistakes that could favour Juventus. Don't help Juventus.
Bergamo: Don't worry I will speak to him about it. I will call him after he finishes training tomorrow.
Carraro: Just make sure he doesn't make any mistakes because if he does and it favours Juventus then it would be a disaster.
One of the guests on the show who was sitting next to Luciano Moggi as the transcript was played believes the whole Calcipoli process at the time should have been thrown out based on that call.
"It's a scandal. We are talking about the head of Italian football here. Based on just this call, the whole Calciopoli process should have been scrapped," said the guest.
Since then, Moggi has spoken further on the subject, and he has blamed the current Juventus management for not doing enough to protect the club from the sharp edges of Calciopoli.
He says the Old Lady would never have gone down to Serie B if the Elkann ownership fought for the cause with greater effort back in 2006.
"Inter's 2006 Scudetto? They should have given it to my porter, it would have been safe there," Moggi told Mattino Cinque.
"The problem is another though. Juventus did not defend anyone. If they had defended themselves like other clubs, there would never have gone down to Serie B."
Mario Sconcerti, a columnist for the Corriere della Sera newspaper and football pundit for Sky Sport Italia has defended Juventus in light of all the latest developments that have been churned up by the trial in Naples.
"It wasn't about the decision to give a Scudetto, but to take two away from Juventus was grave and serious. You cannot take away a club's history because of the behaviour of certain directors," he told Il Sussidiario.net.
But, that's not all, Milan have now been accused of having direct communication with referees at the time.
In another call, published by L'Espresso, the then Milan consultant Leonardo Meani spoke with referee Pierluigi Collina after he took a game between Siena and Milan. Meani says Milan vice president Adriano Galliani is keen to speak with the bald-headed whistle blower.
Meani: He [Adriano Galliani] asked about you. He wanted to have a chat, but couldn't because the location was not ideal.
Meani then invites Collina to a meeting at Galliani's house, but the referee refuses, fearing he will be recognised.
Collina: Both myself and Galliani can easily be recognised, I wouldn't want someone to see us.
Collina and Galliani are then alleged to have met at Meani's own restaurant for a meeting and again on other occasions.
Some time after the original Calcipoli scandal, Collina was promoted, and is currently the Serie A and B referee designator.
Meanwhile, Fiorentina, who missed out on two Champions League seasons because of their points penalty in 2006 have hinted they could take legal action based on further developments in the Naples trial.
Viola deputy chairman Mario Cognini told La Nazione newspaper, "We had made a complaint stratight away that we were victims of a profound injustice.
"What will we do now? We will wait for the outcomes, then we can take initiative so that our rights are respected."
Tuesday 5 July, 2011 Moggi: 'Let Inter sing about stealing'
Luciano Moggi was the main ‘villain’ of Calciopoli and is enjoying Inter’s fall from grace. “Let’s see if they still sing about stealing.” The former Juventus director general was seen as the primary figure behind the scandal and barred permanently from holding jobs in football.
The latest FIGC report into the Calciopoli wiretaps turned up evidence against the Nerazzurri, who also made regular phone calls to refereeing designators.
“Finally we have been able to drag these things out of them, even if there is still time for the kind of victory I am thinking of,” Moggi told Tuttosport.
“Considering what they did to me and to Juventus, it’ll take a lot more than this.”
As the incidents occurred in 2006, the matter is beyond the statute of limitations, so Inter will not have that Scudetto revoked.
“I can finally enjoy the fact that someone listened to me. It’s only a shame this is coming out now, as I was already saying these things in 2006.
“If I were in Massimo Moratti’s shoes, I would’ve avoided going around telling everyone I was clean and honest for all these years. Now those phrases are even more jarring in light of the recent revelations.
“Besides, if he thinks he’s really all that honest, then let Moratti and Inter forego the statute of limitations! Let them have a trial.
“I think back to the footage of the Inter players who were singing: ‘We win without stealing.’ I expect they’ll have to dream up a new chant, now...”
The recent report only emerged because Moggi’s lawyers played the Inter wiretaps during the civil Calciopoli trial in Naples earlier this year.
“They made a big mistake in giving me up for dead,” continued the ex-Juventus director general.
“They thought I’d go to sleep after the 2006 trial, but I’m still wide awake. They wanted Calciopoli? Fine, now have the whole thing. Some will cry, some have explaining to do, but everyone has to be on alert.”
Inter should be stripped of the 2006 Scudetto, says former Juventus President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.
The ex-Juve chief made the claim in an interview with Sport Mediaset after FIGC investigator Stefano Palazzi accused Inter of also being involved in the Calciopoli scandal which crushed the Old Lady.
“It seems evident to me that Inter made calls to people with whom contact was not allowed,” Cobolli Gigli noted.
“It’s clear that Palazzi is an accuser, but he was one in 2006 too and there should have been a different outcome.
“What I ask myself and what everyone should ask themselves is why these documents [the wire taps] were not at our disposal back then.
“Why did whoever took these documents to the Naples tribunal not bring them to the Federation in 2006?”
Palazzi opened a second investigation into Calciopoli after a range of new wiretaps emerged during the Naples criminal investigation into the scandal.
Palazzi has now released his findings in a 72-page dossier where he alleges that Inter and former President Giacinto Facchetti committed sporting fraud by speaking to refereeing designators.
The original sporting trial saw Juventus stripped of two Scudetti and demoted to Serie B. Inter were handed the 2006 title in their place.
Milan, Lazio, Fiorentina and Reggina were also penalised with point deductions.
“Juventus were sent into Serie B,” Cobolli Gigli added. “They had to sell important players and were coming off the back of years of glory and good results.
“There was a heavy economical loss too, around €100m. But it is not just a question of money. Juve had to be reconstructed.
“The first two or three years went well, but then difficulties emerged because the club didn’t have a solid base in technical and sporting terms.
“Should Inter’s 2006 title be revoked? I’ve always said so. The fact is that it is now redundant because of the statute of limitations, but it shouldn’t have been assigned.
“Back then decisions were rushed and perhaps Guido Rossi – acting FIGC chief during the scandal – was advised poorly.
“We thought that at the time, never mind now. That Scudetto must be revoked.”
Maybe Ita or Ju29ro(wherever the fuck he is), can explain something to me. Reports are saying that inter can't be punished because the statute of limitations has passed. I'm guessing the statute of limitations they're referring to is figc's statute of limitations. So can Juve or anyone else take this to a higher committee like CONI, which they had threatened to do back in 06, or even take this to the criminal courts?
Friday 15 July, 2011 Juve to fight for lost Scudetto
Juventus President Andrea Agnelli has threatened legal action if the 2006 Scudetto is not revoked from Inter.
The Italian Football Federation’s executive committee is set to make a ruling on Monday, where it is expected that they will not strip the Nerazzurri of the title.
“I’d like to stress that every legal action will be carried out in order to preserve Juventus, if the sports system won’t be able to provide all members with equal dignity and treatment,” Agnelli noted.
“It’s not time for bureaucracy, it’s time for essence. The dialogue will be restored only when these conditions will be guaranteed.
“People’s respectability isn’t at stake, especially the honourableness of those who cannot argue. We’re playing for the credibility of the system.”
Juve were stripped of the 2005 and 2006 titles for their part in Calciopoli. The first of those Scudetti was unassigned, while the second was handed on to Inter.
However, following revelations from the legal trial in Naples which suggested that there were more widespread attempts to influence referees, including from Inter, Juve asked the FIGC to review the 2006 title.
Agnelli’s comments come just days after Fiorentina, another club caught up in the 2006 Calciopoli scandal, asked for clarity.
“Fiorentina and their main share holders have properly emphasized the treatment inequality suffered from some football clubs in 2006,” Agnelli added.
“These differences are likely to continue if the rumours heard in the last days should be confirmed by the Federal Council on Monday.
“The dialogue between the main movers of the football world is certainly desirable, but the equality conditions between these subjects must still be guaranteed, even better restored, following five years of a system based on double standards.”
The FIGC’s sporting tribunal initially rejected Juve’s claim against Inter on the grounds that the case had expired under the sporting statute of limitations.
That led to the case being shifted to the executive committee who have spent this month examining new evidence.
It is being suggested that the FIGC executive committee will state that they are not legally permitted to take the 2006 title away from Inter.
Juventus were demoted to Serie B in 2006, while Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were handed point penalties.
Cheating mother fuckers. It stinks like shit, this whole incident. Inter should be relegated for fixing the whole trial, those fucks. Looks like the anti-Juventini were made to look like real assholes after this. Why don't they all come out now and man up??? MAN UP LIKE I DID WHEN THIS ALL BROKE OUT!! Say it! "Dino, you're my daddy and you were right the whole time" . Moratti and his chronies at this trial ruined calcio and skewed the advantage towards them for the past 5 years. They should be relegated for some type of conflict of interest.
Tuesday 19 July, 2011 Juve to take Calciopoli action
Juventus are now assessing their next move after the Italian Football Federation [FIGC] opted against taking the 2006 Scudetto away from Inter.
The FIGC’s executive committee met on Monday and, after consulting lawyers, ruled that they had no power to strip the Calciopoli tainted title from the Nerazzurri.
“The outcome of today’s Federal Council confirms the absolute treatment inequality in the event of similar circumstances,” a note from the Old Lady stated.
“The petition submitted 14 months ago by Juventus allowed for a deep examination, unfortunately not followed by any acceptance of responsibility by the sports bodies involved, who instead dismissed their political role as governance.
“It is understood that, in order to protect their millions of fans, as well as the shareholders and employees, Juventus must pursue the right and proper verification of facts while looking for treatment equality.
“Therefore, the club’s lawyers have been given the mandate to identify the best protection instruments in the administrative and international law.
“Management and lawyers are simultaneously proceeding with the assessment of the economic damages caused by such behaviour.
“Since today’s decision is far from providing equality and justice, Juventus want to assert all the internationally applicable rules at every relevant office.”
Juve were stripped of the 2005 and 2006 championships for their part in Calciopoli. The first of those Scudetti was unassigned, while the second was handed on to the San Siro giants.
However, following revelations from the legal trial in Naples which suggested that there were more widespread attempts to influence referees, including from Inter, Juve asked the FIGC to review the case.
Juventus were demoted to Serie B in 2006, while Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were handed point penalties.
Juve’s first step may be to launch an appeal to CONI – the Italian National Olympic Committee.
