We are constantly told Inter have the greatest strength in depth so why, asks Susy Campanale, do they play the same XI every time?

It is said that over the course of an entire campaign the team with the best starting XI might not necessarily win, as strength in depth becomes the key to success. If injuries or tiredness affect the form of a few players, it won’t hit some sides as hard as others if there are adequate understudies. It is beyond a shadow of a doubt that Inter have the largest collection of talents in Serie A and admirers often noted their reserves could make a stab for the title too. So why are we always seeing the same players?

It is the crunch time of the season with Roma snapping at their heels, the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona and Coppa Italia clash with Fiorentina on the horizon. You’d think this was the precise moment when the Nerazzurri’s vast resources became their secret weapon in sustaining three different tournaments. Instead Jose Mourinho seems determined to squeeze every last ounce of energy from the same players and it is starting to really show.

Clearly he appreciates the work done by these figures, but can Diego Milito, Wesley Sneijder, Esteban Cambiasso, Lucio and Walter Samuel not be given an occasional rest? Mario Balotelli’s mysterious exile is now over, so why aren’t his fresh legs being used? What does Ivan Cordoba have to do to get a game? Even Marco Materazzi can give his contribution when called upon, but he is nowhere to be seen.

When playing every three days at the highest level, it is imperative to rotate the squad and keep the stars fresh for the final push. Roma don’t have anywhere near as many quality options as Inter, but Claudio Ranieri still has to rest some of his players in these last few weeks to avoid burnout. When the time comes at the Nou Camp and the Stadio Olimpico, will Mourinho end up regretting his loyalty to the first choice XI and lack of trust in the rest of the squad?
