That's why we need an open-minded coach like Prandelli. Look how much time Jovetic is getting, and look how it payed off for them in CL. Prandelli knows how to build a team, and the formation he prefers (4-2-3-1) suits Juve with the players we have right now. The part of the season where we were doing our best was not only when Diego and Giovinco played together, but a healthy Camo too. We also need Buffon, Camo and Chiellini to play a full/healthy season.

I don't think we have much of a choice but to rebuild this side. I know that it sounds a bit extreme, but if we are going to turn a corner next season, I don't see how we can do it without replacing some players. 5 transfers is a lot, but it needs to happen. We need to make a change and settle on a tactical system. Don't forget, in 2001 (I think) we signed Buffon, Trezeguet, Nedved and Thuram. Those are some big signings for one season and we hardly needed a rebuild.
As for Diego... Unless we get a world class DM, we cannot use Diego correctly. Well, maybe that is too broad, but here is the problem with Diego... Diego doesn't make overlapping runs into the box. He isn't someone who picks up the ball and runs to goal. He is a distributer. Almost a CM in the sense that he needs a lot of players to work with. We must give him two strikers that play central and awesome side backs that can get width. We also need someone who can dictacte the pace of the game from midfield, like D'Agostino.
The 4-3-1-2 is definitely the formation for him, but our midfield doesn't mesh with him and here is why. Marchisio is not a distributer, he is a runner. He plays similar to Fabregas from Arsenal, which is back further, but makes runs to the top of the box. He has a nice long shot that needs to be utilized, and is good at making runs into the box. Marchisio needs to play with a destroyer next to him to assure that the defence is well guarded and allowing the sidebacks to operate freely and not have to obsess over their tactical responsibilities. Problem is that Melo, nor Sissoko are destroyers. Ball winners they may be, but they do not plug gaps left by the defence when the CBs stretch outward, and they move to far forward in attack to properly filter counter attacks (which is why we get countered so much). Poulsen is actually the best destroyer on the team (too bad we ditched Zanetti).
What Diego needs in the midfield behind him is two destroyers and a director. Someone like D'Agostino, Toulalan and Sissoko/Melo would be much better than anything with Marchisio in it. Why? Because, when Diego isn't getting service, he drops too far back and takes himself out of the play. When CMs overlap him, he drops in behind them and doesn't execute his role. Diego needs to know that he has a wall behind him. The width must come from the sidebacks and the strikers need to make slashing runs up top. With a director behind him, he doesn't have to take the ball off the DMs feet, or get caught watching a runner blow past him with the ball that he should be having.
So, why now does the 4-2-3-1 not suit him? Because he isn't aggressive enough of a player to have the type of attacking responsibility required to make that formation tick. That role is for someone like a Totti, Cassano, Ribery, Gourcuff... someone who is capable of being a support striker and play inside the box after buildups. He is not physical enough, but mostly not aggressive enough for that role. A 4-1-3-2 is much better for him, because he will have two strikers and two outlets on the wings... then he can just sit atop the box and support play.
It is possible for him to function in a 4-2-3-1, but we would need to sign wingers that are more of strikers. Players like Vucinic or Balotelli, players like that, and I just don't see it being realistic. Iaquinta is the best current option for us, but we have no one else. Sure, the formation worked on this day, but after watching a few films and decent coach will know that you just need to eliminate the striker and the rest will fall like dominoes because Diego doesn't have the characteristics to support that role alone like Totti.
On to your transfer suggestions. I think you are taking the route of saying, well we are so in the weeds right now, lets take a step back next year to take two steps forward in two. I guess this philosophy has some merit, but I think it is not necessary. That backline you proposed is no better than that of a second tier team. There are no champions or leaders in that back line. All those players (even Chiellini) have accomplished nothing in their careers (as of yet). Having backups of Zaccardo, Legrottaglie and Ariaudo don't make me feel any better than I do this year. This isn't helped be having a RB with a similar mentality and a LB who is going to be too responsible (with Sissoko on his side) in flanking attacks to demonstrate that he is the smartest player on that whole back line. Ranocchia is a much better choice, but he has had one season in Serie A and has a lot to prove before we start pinning our defensive leadership role on him. When you play for Bari there are minimal expectations, as soon as you put on the black and white you have it all to prove. I am all for signing him, and he is defintely the one we should get, but we need someone else just incase (or keep Cannavaro).
If you really have your heart set on keeping Diego, I would sign Lugano, Toulalan/Mascherano, and Cassano. Lugano has the perfect mentality and resume to captain this defense. He is a natural leader, a good coverage defender and great in the air. He can also help mentor the hot-headed Caceres and make our investment in him worthwhile. Melo is better suited for the left side of the midfield three. Here he can support Criscito more properly than Sissoko and not have a responisbility he cannot handle by being the sole destroyer. Marchisio will play off the right flank with Caceres and Diego and keep Pazzini central. Giovinco is really the wrong fit for this formation and, he might be our best option now, but there is no way this is ideal for Juventus.
It would be much better to have another striker, or a support striker like Cassano who can link with Criscito and Diego and help set our striker up for goals, while being accountible for scoring himself. Giovinco can definitely make plays, but we want our strikers to score.
