Jam, debate is healthy. We can't have constant sweetness and light, it's too sugary for any discerning mind...and you won't get me picking on you for having been born into a comfortable middle class lifestyle. In fact I commend you for putting it to good use which is more than some do!
My Nth American knowledge of the often completely different lifestyles all within two countries is not what it might be. But if you're saying it's all very well having thoughts verging on communism in a democracy then I get your point on left! You see first hand what communism in a communist country is and maybe some of these people in the comparative comfort and safety of whichever Western country they live might not be so inclined to continue along those lines if they awoke at 4am to find the secret police kicking their door in which, we are told, most certainly still happens under a communist regime!
The match...no point in repeating myself. I too am glad we got one point. All I can add is, despite all the hype, we are actually better than Napoli and under different circs we would have won...
Gio, as a rule I prefer to avoid politics. As another general election looms in the UK, we are being subjected to all the hype and hoo-hah, much of which is not in fact the thoughts of the individual party leaders but carefully prepared statements made by specially employed writers, just as with our "beloved" club presidente! As if that wasn't enough, we have to suffer the urgings of the different toilet papers (I refuse to call these rags "newspapers!") to vote for their chosen party, with a multitude of reasons given in their favour and even more in discrediting the opposition.
I've seen enough in my life to assure me that only the underlings in our main political parties really believe the policies and promises will be carried out. Those in government have repeatedly proven they are out for themselves, first and foremost. There are enough examples with which to refute many MPs' credibility but in the interest of sticking with what has been openly proven, the recent "expenses" investigations say plenty! If they are willing to fiddle those, then what else also?
Just as you do, I believe it's too easy for some, living in a democracy and having the luxury of free speech, to rubbish much of what that country stands for. They would not be allowed to express those same opinions freely as residents of many other countries, be they Communist China, parts of Central and South America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe etc. The all important word is freedom! Without it there's nothing other than an existence, not living!
Jam, as I said, you needn't be in any way defensive about your good fortune. For my part, I admire a self made man just as much as one who put his silver spoon to good use. Our friend the avvocato is that, my father was that, I am that though I choose not to go into any detail.
I wouldn't think it's that Gio is easily drawn, he is naturally drawn. His very nature is what allowed him to succeed in his profession. Debating is his job and he will still derive an amount of pleasure from at least certain aspects of his work, even after all the years spent. Translate that into a forum discussion and it's like offering him a plate of his favourite meat dish...
I have met very few people who earn their living in the stock exchange as I think you do. One guy I did know many years ago was wiped out in the space of one day. I don't care for the odds. In football terms call me Ranieri as opposed to Ferguson, Mourinho, etc. I'll only risk up to a point!
btw guys, I don't rise to bait...don't hold your breath waiting for me to discuss more politics, no matter what's said! I'd rather discuss something I like!
Incidentally, nice to see today it's verified that Toni will be available for the Milan gig! Also the article on our mister about Roma being his nazionale! Football Italia are getting slow though. Mediaset ran this a full day before!
Carlo - don't worry, what I do now has very little to do with the public markets and stock exchanges, at least directly. Plus if I did, I'd be making a lot more money. However, most of the outfits that my colleagues deal with do deal with public markets and do blow up, it's pretty cutthroat. The market giveth, the market taketh away.
Roma Working To Sign Arsenal Defender William Gallas - Report The Italians are hoping to lure Gallas on a Bosman...
By Salvatore Landolina
William Gallas is a target for Roma, and they are planning to lure him from Arsenal in the summer, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.
Gallas' deal in north London expires in the summer and there has been no indication that he will renew it. Roma's low-key spending policies mean he would be a welcome option as the transfer would be free.
At 33, Gallas is on the wrong side of Arsene Wenger's youngster policy, meaning staying on will be tough given that the coach prefers to offer one-year extensions to players above 30.
Claudio Ranieri is keen on him, and the two worked together at Chelsea. It was Ranieri who landed Gallas in 2001 from Olympique Marseille, and he would like a reunion. The Lupi are on course for Champions League qualification, and the coach is keen to shape his side up early for next season.
==============================
What do you guys think? Is this a good option? He'll be 33 by the time we sign him, and I've seen only a handful of Arsenal games this season so I don't know if he's past it yet. I guess you can't really go wrong with adding another experienced option at CB, but it would have to be at the right price (in this case free).
All things considered, the Milan gig won't be easy even with home advantage, Pizarro back, and Toni starting as he probably will do. I'll always remember John Motson the longtime BBC commentator once saying, "a team is often only as strong as its weakest link on the pitch!" So Taddei needs to be on his game and not make mistakes, nor do we need any faux pas from Mexes who can be immense one minute and next, be at the centre of giving something crucial away. Presuming of course he is selected.
On our right, Taddei and Motta need to shut down Ronaldinho who has looked a lot more like his old self recently. Riise could well prove to be what I call our asso nella manica or "ace in the hole" because hopefully Milan won't be able to cope with his force and pace. Then there's Vuci who seems to be getting back his taste for scoring goals, even if they have, all bar one, been from a "poacher's" position...
Earlier this week I read Thiago Silva saying, if Roma beat Milan they can look to that as being responsible for handing the title once again to Inter. That's what he meant even if he didn't phrase it that way. I say, Oh really? I'm looking for us to at worst, draw with Inter in l'Olimpico. If the rossoneri are worth their salt then they will push Inter all the way, AS WILL WE though that's not how he sees it. If he took his head out of his asshole he'd see as the rest of us do, that although Inter are the strongest, they continually react badly when under pressure...
On our latest transfer rumours...
This is the bloody trouble with having an impoverished bank account! We are going to be linked with players on their way down who were once regarded as stars irrespective of whether they truly were or weren't because they are now what we can afford! Though we have hopes for Toni, that statement applies to him also.
On Gallas, he wouldn't be my choice. What though, of L'Imperatore, the bad boy who had to go home to Brasil to rediscover his form and now says he is ready again for Serie A, Roma being his choice of club because of our Brazilian influence. I would have welcomed him to us at one time but I'm not nearly so sure about it any more. What a pity we cannot afford Giuseppe Rossi who also now wants a Serie A return. When I think we could have got him cheap before he became a star...
Ed, to continue from the "Totti" thread...don't you think the "Transfer Rumours/Contract Extensions" thread is one we'd be expected to have even if only sporadically supported?
Unless you are specifically concentrating on the Roma section, if you want to create more space and concentrate more on active threads to generate interest, perhaps some of the old and long abandoned ones from our sizeable Off Topics section could go, and I include some of mine there. I think we all realise I started some of those to be taken seriously and others for us all to merely pass the time during quiet forum spells...and they served their purpose but have now long since outlived their usefulness.
