Inter set for Ranocchia talks

Inter are expected to meet Genoa this week to talk about the prospect of signing highly-rated young defender Andrea Ranocchia.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at Bari where he is recovering from a serious knee injury.

However, Ranocchia showed enough quality in his 17 starting appearances this season to attract interest from Italy's biggest clubs, including Juventus.

Inter have a very good relationship with Genoa after doing a huge deal for Thiago Motta and Diego Milito in the summer.

Il Corriere dello Sport understands that Inter President Massimo Moratti is prepared to sign Ranocchia in June and let him stay at Genoa until January 2011.

Inter are looking to gradually rejuvenate their ageing squad.

Ranocchia is seen as the perfect replacement for veteran centre-back Marco Materazzi.

Eto'o out of favour at Inter - Wednesday 17 February, 2010

Inter striker Samuel Eto'o is at risk of losing his playing in the starting XI after three poor performances in Serie A.

The 28-year-old Cameroon international who signed from Barcelona in the summer was expected to be among the very first names on the team sheet, but his first year in Italy has been somewhat disappointing.

Eto'o has scored eight goals in 19 appearances for the Nerazzurri this season, a good return by any standards.

However, the two-time Champions League winner has without doubt been overshadowed by Diego Milito and Goran Pandev up front.

La Gazzetta dello Sport understands Jose Mourinho was disappointed with the way Eto'o played against Cagliari, Parma and Napoli.

“Today it's not easy to be my striker, partly because of what the others are doing,” Mourinho said. “Eto'o cannot think that he is at a red light and that he simply has to wait for it to change, not with me.”

Eto'o's professionalism has never been in question, but some feel next week's game against Chelsea could be crucial in deciding his future at the club.

Inter Coach Jose Mourinho: Chelsea Have 'Suffered' Since I Left Stamford Bridge

'Carletto' gets a customary greeting from the 'Special One'...

Inter coach Jose Mourinho has taken a swipe at his former employers Chelsea, claiming that the road has only been downhill for the west London club since he headed out of Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have won only an FA Cup since the 'Special One' left England. Now plying his trade with the Serie A giants, the Portuguese manager maintains that his former employers have sorely missed his presence.

"Chelsea have suffered in the last two years, and it's no coincidence that their decline happened after I left," Mourinho said, according to The Mirror.

"We had a unique relationship as a manager, players and fans, and when you break that, it's not easy to fix. They've had a lot of coaches since and maybe some didn't have the mentality for the club. Maybe they tried to change too much of what we put in place.

"I knew there was no time for a long-term plan with the owner they have at Stamford Bridge. You must win the title in your first season or say bye-bye. I gave them what they needed but I always knew it wasn't a job that would last forever. Maybe they would've been better off sticking with me than changing manager when they did."

Of the three managers before Carlo Ancelotti to take the reins of the club following the departure of the former Porto boss, only Guus Hiddink managed to guide the club to silverware in the form of an FA Cup triumph last season.

Mourinho also told Nuts magazine: "Inter have asked me to try to win the Champions League for them, and I'll attempt to give them this – so they're stuck with me for a little while yet! Now we have to play an important couple of matches against Chelsea and this is obviously a very special game for me."

And concerning the Blues' Italian manager - with whom he shared a frosty relationship during Carletto's Serie A days - Mourinho couldn't resist adding: "But I'm a part of Chelsea's history forever and they'll always be a big part of me. Let's see if Ancelotti can finish his time at Chelsea with a record as good as mine!"

Inter host Chelsea at the San Siro on Wednesday, 24 February, in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

@ Frank. Pretty much agree with Dejan. Players have characteristics. You cant expect someone like Sneijder to pose an aerial threat, no matter how much you train him. Likewise, one cant expect 2 'positional' players like Zanetti & Cambiasso to become a movement type of players. You mentioned Keita & Toure, but those 2 are far from being players who dont offer movement. Especially Keita.. Having said that, its not like we have to start playing like Barca. It's just that we need more players who can offer those movements.
Dejan, checking Ranocchia after he comes back from his injury would be already too late. Ranocchia (for those who dont know Italian, Ranocchia means a female frog..lol) will be a pillar of the NT in 2 years time and this is our best shot at having a defender with great a prospect. I am ready to bet that if he recovers well and joins us, he would take Lucio's place in defence even from next year. There's simply no time to think about it cause there are a lot of other clubs willing to take him. Thank God we have a preferential path with Genoa and they might even be tempted to make Suazo part of the deal. We need to act now.

APPIANO GENTILE - The squad reported back for training this morning after being given a two-day break. Dejan Stankovic was back in full training with his team-mates in a session which consisted of warm-up exercises, technical-tactical drills and a practice match.

Mario Balotelli and Davide Santon were put through individual sessions after a warm-up with their team-mates. Cristian Chivu and Marco Materazzi also trained apart.

Manchester City Target Maicon’s Agent Won’t Rule Out Inter Exit

But Moratti will have the final say…

Brazilian international Maicon could leave Italian champions Inter in the summer as long as negotiations with interested parties get the green light from club President Massimo Moratti.

The revelation came from the player’s representative, Antonio Caliendo, when asked about press reports claiming that Premiershit big spenders Manchester City have lined up a €45 million bid to sign the 28-year-old.

“When you have a contract in the way, it takes two parties to get things done,” Caliendo told Calciomercatonews.com.

“We are aware of offers for Maicon. But for him to leave Inter, the club must agree to it.

“Both parties have to benefit from it. If there were this benefit we could talk about it. So, the choice is up to President Moratti: it’s him who will decide whether to release Maicon.”

The former Monaco man would reunite with ex-Inter boss Roberto Mancini at Eastlands.

“Mancini has always expressed his desire to have Maicon, so it doesn’t come as a surprise,” Caliendo added to Tuttomercatoweb.

“We’ll see what Inter intend to do at the end of the season…”

Ajax youngster Gregory Van Der Wiel is being talked about as a summer transfer target for Arsenal and Inter.

According to sources in his homeland, the 22-year-old is being seriously monitored by the English and Italian giants.

Arsene Wenger has an eye for talented youngsters, while the Nerazzurri are looking for a Douglas Maicon alternative.

The Brazilian’s future at San Siro is uncertain with reports strongly linking him with a summer move to Manchester City.

Der Wiel, who featured against Juventus in last night’s Europa League game, is likely to be involved in the Dutch’s World Cup squad.

Juventus and Manchester City have also been tentatively linked with the full-back in recent times.

Inter are also understood to be watching Gremio right-back Mario Fernandes after the 19-year-old’s performances in South America.
