ROMA AIM TO PILE MISERY ON VIOLA

Roma will be keen to build on their midweek Coppa Italia success, and at the same time rub more salt in the wounds of Fiorentina, when the two sides clash at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday. The teams had differing fortunes in the opening legs of the semi-finals this week, with Roma easing past Udinese 2-0 while the Viola lost out to Inter Milan by the narrowest of margins.

However, both clubs now face a long wait to see whether they will meet in the final, with the return matches not scheduled until mid-April. Roma boss Claudio Ranieri admits the timing of the fixtures is far from ideal for all four clubs involved.

"Whoever decided the dates of the Coppa Italia is clearly a genius," he said. "It's like playing the first half and returning two months after the interval. "If we could finish the fixture in a week, as planned, it would be a completely different story.

"They're trying to give credibility to this tournament but then something like this is decided. In two months we should be fine and we should be playing even better. But then again, two months from now who knows what could happen?"

In the meantime, Roma's attention will switch back to Serie A with the possibility of taking second spot from AC Milan this weekend if results go their way. Roma will be boosted by the return of captain Francesco Totti, who has recovered from a knee injury which has kept him sidelined since the winter break.

Totti came back into the side for the cup clash with Udinese and suffered no reaction to the fitness problems which have troubled him in recent weeks. On loan striker Luca Toni remains sidelined with a calf injury though, while Nicolas Burdisso is suspended for the trip to Florence.

Fiorentina have more than just Coppa Italia concerns at present with the Viola sliding down to 11th in the league after taking one point from their last three matches. With a seven-point gap to make up on the top four, coach Cesare Prandelli needs to find some inspiration to get his team back on track. he arrival of Brazilian striker Keirrison on loan from Barcelona this week could be the spark they need, and he is hoping to make his bow against Roma tomorrow.

"I am very happy to have arrived at a big club like Fiorentina," said Keirrison. "I am ready to play. "I am proud to have arrived in Italy and I hope to do well and score many goals for this team."

Prandelli remains without striker Adrian Mutu, who has been suspended indefinitely after testing positive for the banned substance sibutramine. Felipe is also serving a one-match ban for the Viola while Per Kroldrup and Cristian Zanetti are injured.

La Roma a Firenze insegue il secondo posto dopo il pareggio del Milan contro il Bologna del pomeriggio. Ranieri preferisce Cassetti a Motta e recupera Mexes dopo la botta subita giovedì all'Olimpico contro il Catania. Al centro dell'attacco Totti torna dal primo minuto in campionato quarantanove giorni dopo l'ultima volta, contro il Parma, il 20 dicembre scorso. Al suo fianco Ranieri schiera Vucinic. Nella Fioretina Gilardino unica punta con Jovetic alle sue spalle.

Cracking first half. We're unlucky not to be three or four goals to the good already. Everyone's playing well - Totti's touches and movements are brilliant and he and Vooch are carving them up again and again. Motta and Pizza have been a bit quiet, but everyone else is doing brilliantly. They just need to keep it going for another 45 minutes and the chances will come. Either that or go 4-4-2 rombo and change as many of the 11 as we can. Oh, and that disallowed goal was miles offside.

It looks like we are controlling the ball in the midfield very well and holding tight defensively, which is good to know. Riise must have 2 hearts, he's everywhere!

Yerhoo. Not our most brilliant display by any means but who gives a bananas, three points is three points. Though we may expect it, stubborn cnuts that we are, we can't always play great and produce our best game, although we did at the start and then for bits and pieces in the second, but I think its fair to say there's an element of luck in our victory this evening. But we battled hard, put our bodies on the line and took everything Fiorentina could throw at us and thankfully we got that all important goal in the end. Very positive.
