Alexandre Pato is out of the Milan derby after a thigh strain, while Alessandro Nesta is also a major doubt.

The Rossoneri are on fine form going into the game against Inter, but were hit by a double blow from the medical staff this afternoon.

The official club website confirmed that Pato has suffered “a first to second degree lesion in his right thigh.

“The player will undergo a course of physiotherapy over the next few weeks and ulterior tests.”

This not only rules the Brazilian out of the derby, it also means he faces a race against time to be fit for the Champions League clash with Manchester United in February.

‘The Duck’ is yet to step on to the field in 2010, as he has been dealing with this recurring muscular problem.

To make matters worse, defensive rock Nesta “has a large bruise on the muscle of his right thigh. The player will undergo further tests on Thursday morning.”

Nesta limped off as a precautionary measure after a knock during the 4-0 win over Siena on Sunday, but now finds himself a doubt for the big Inter match.

The medical report on the official Milan website also noted that Mathieu Flamini took a knock to the right shoulder and “his condition will be evaluated over the next few days.”

Clarence Seedorf will be in full training if he passes tomorrow’s check-up.

Gianluca Zambrotta’s tests showed his right calf is healing, but will continue a personalised training schedule and so is highly unlikely to recover for the derby this weekend.

Maldini - so Thiago Silva is not as awesome as Football Italia and some others are saying? I have not been able to watch much Serie, much less Milan this season. Also has Ronaldinho really picked up his game that much? I know he has been steadily getting better and that even in his "slump" he was creating chances like he should but that they were not being finished and that Milan team as a whole was struggling, and much of the blame fell on him...

jamil, its not that thiago silva isnt great. hes turning into a fantastic defender. but who is our backup if one of the 2 gets injured? favalli and calamity kaladze. but nesta is on a whole other level, the kind of player that makes it worth watching football. its like watching kaka' or iniesta on the field, there is that element of elegance to his game that other players rarely have.

as for ronaldinho, hes leading the assists chart in the serie A, and he has 9 goals. based on that alone you know hes back to being a force. and i havent seen him run with the ball so many times as he did versus siena, they didnt close him down fast enough and he just created some glorious opportunities for himself. he is also enjoying this new lease of life, and it is manifesting in his game. its fun to watch, and even better when the final scoreline says another game won because of ronaldinho's magic.

dejan, i'm sure he'll play too. but you guys have a shit load of injuries too, apparently muntari pulled up today with an injury in training. that leaves inter with only 4 first-team midfielders for the match. cambiasso and zanetti are still there, i expect zanetti to try to do some kind of job on ronaldinho, leaving maicon space to do his thing.

Muntari being injured is helping us more than you, trust me. Stankovic is most likely going to play so we'll have him, Cambiasso and Zanetti with Sneijder supporting Balo/Pandev and Milito. No Eto'o/Pato and most likely Seedorf/Motta and Chivu/Zambro so all in all, should be a good game. Also, I'll probably jinx us by saying this but you're also playing against Mou's 8 year unbeaten run at home in league games.

Hopefully Milan will win the Derby and open up a little title race for ourselves, and then all of ye can watch in terror as Roma overtakes the both of yis.

Milan star Ronaldinho is confident he can win this weekend's eagerly anticipated derby against Inter. The 29-year-old is rediscovering some of his best form and Milan are reaping the benefits. Ronaldinho scored a hat-trick against Siena at the weekend and he has a history of finding the net against Inter.

Speaking to Il Corriere dello Sport, Ronaldinho was asked if he could once again be the man of the derby, to which he replied: “I think so. Because I am going through a great moment of form on a personal level. Because Milan are playing well. Because for us, it's an important game.â€
