Motta for Cassetti and Menez for Perrotta would be very positive and audacious decisions, which is largely why I don't think Ranieiri will go with them. Menez you can understand alright, in that in the absence of Lord Francesco we need a bit of spark out there, although at the expense of Perrotta, who has been playing extremely well, is a very tough call to make. If these reports of an all new and adventurous Stopgap are to be believed then he should just go all the way and put Menez on the right with Simone in the middle and drop Taddei, preferably into the Tevere. But perhaps a large part of why he won't do that is to accommodate Motta at right-full, who can offer more width and more aerial assistance for the head of Luca. All very intricate, and all very, em, whats the words, tinkering? Like I said, anyway, I would be surprised if we don't see Cassetti starting.

On the subject of Totti returning for gli Azzurri, I agree with all of what Tom said (no the world is not ending, to my knowledge anyway). He shouldn't of retired when he did, but we have to respect his decision, I don't like the way its been bandied about in the media of a Totti return after all the hard graft was done and Italy had qualified (with comments like 'Ilary wouldn't mind a holiday to South Africa next summer'), I don't like the way talk of a potential return has been on and off and no one seems to be willing to rule it out and make a firm decision. If he did come back he would certainly be an important player do very well, no doubt, but I just don't like the way the entire affair has been carried out, it just doesn't sit right.

Inter prepare final bid for Baptista Tuesday 5 January, 2010

Inter are ready to launch a final bid for Roma's Brazilian midfielder Julio Baptista if they manage to sell Patrick Vieira to Manchester City.

City boss Roberto Mancini is keen to raid his former club for low cost talent and Vieira, who's contract is substantial to say the least, would be let go at a decent price.

The 33-year-old former Arsenal midfielder is anxious for regular first team football after making just six starting appearances in Serie A this season.

He wants the chance to play himself into contention for a place in France's World Cup squad ahead of next summer's finals in South Africa.

Baptista has been identified as his ideal replacement partly because he is still eligible to play in the Champions League.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, one of Baptista's representatives yesterday got in touch with Inter's chief technical director Marco Branca.

He apparently told Baptista to be prepared because things would change quickly over the next few days with Inter working on the basis that his transfer will eventually go through by the end of the week.
