I Giallorossi scendono sul campo C di Trigoria per la seduta mattutina d'allenamento. I giocatori, si presentano sul terreno d'allenamento verso le 10:45. Sono tutti pesantemente coperti, per via del rigido clima di Trigoria (8° circa) accompagnato da forti raffiche di vento.

Il gruppo svolge lavoro atletico ( ripetute) e quindi esercizio sulla circolazione di palla ad un tocco. Nel frattempo i portieri lavorano a parte con il preparatore Pellizaro.

Assenti: Tonetto, Okaka, Mexes e Francesco Totti. A questo punto le possibilità di vedere il Capitano in campo a Cagliari, sono davvero minime. Mister Ranieri divide le squadre in due schieramenti per effettuare lavoro sulla tattica :

Verdi: Motta, Andreolli, Cassetti, Riise, Brighi, Pizarro, Cerci, Esposito, Perrotta, Toni

Rossi: Cicinho, Burdisso, Juan, Pit, De Rossi, Faty, Taddei, Menez, Vucinic, Baptista

La squadra appare molto concentrata, anche per via della forte presenza di Ranieri che si fa sentire dai suoi giocatori alternando consigli tattici ad urla di richiamo. L'allenamento si conclude verso le 12:10

What do you guys think on that? Totti coming back to the Nazionale and if so, only deciding in April???

I don't like it, Frence', though I'd enjoy watching Totti perform well for the Azzurri. I was very disappointed when he left the national team; personally, I still think he had plenty of unfinished business - plenty to prove on the international stage. Italy would be a better side with him there, of course, but I think it's wrong for a guy to choose to sit out the qualifying games and then only turn up for the tournament. It'd be different had Lippi, say, been up front about this: that he'd talked to Totti, that Totti wanted to be included but felt he needed to sit out many of the qualifying games for the sake of his fitness. That's hardly the way it's been conducted, though, and having left the national team I think he shouldn't be considered for the WC.

Italy needs an overhaul in attack. Totti is needed.

Maro...do u perhaps think that Totti's committment to getting healthy in 06warrants some consideration in regard to how deserving he is of a spot on the team? He's played in his share of tournaments and qualifiers. Considering the current circumstances with this team, he should be considered as nothing less than a deserving lock.

I don't mean it in a punitive sense, if you know what I mean. I just think the time for the decision was 18 months ago. I respect Totti's decision, but I think he's made it and that should be the end of it. Of course there's probably plenty going on here behind the scenes - conversations which have already been had along the sorts of lines I'm suggesting it might have been good to have seen out in the open. I just think you commit to a project and if you're not able to commit to it it's better for everyone for that to be considered final.

Perhaps it's just the way the whole thing has been conducted. For me, the time for the decision was 18 months ago. The only alternative, for me, would have been something like this: Totti coming out and saying he wants to continue to contribute but doesn't feel he can, realistically, since his body needs the breaks during the International matches. He'd love to be considered by Lippi for the tournament but realises that might be a bit absurd because the coach needs time to build combinations and it'd be disrespectful to those players who had put their bodies on the line during qualifying. None of this flirting between Lippi and Totti in the media, none of the confusion, the will-he, won't he, shite. Just simple and transparent: I will be available but I expect the coach not to pick me. And then if I were Lippi I would proceed not to pick him.
