Milan’s Nesta desperate to avoid Chelsea

MILAN, Dec 10 (Reuters) - AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta is desperate to avoid a meeting with former coach Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea in the Champions League last 16.

The draw for February and March’s first knockout round will be made next Friday when Milan could also be paired with holders Barcelona or 2008 winners Manchester United among others.

Silva out for two months

Milan are reeling this morning after it was revealed Thiago Silva might be out for two months with a pulled hamstring.

The 25-year-old has been inspirational for the Rossoneri so far this season and is crucial to their new style of play.

Silva will undergo a further scan tomorrow, only then will Milan's medical team be absolutely sure of his recovery time.

The news makes Milan's qualification for the Champions League second round bittersweet, but in the short-term it means they will be without their first choice centre-back pairing for 2009's remaining matches against Palermo and Fiorentina.

Kakha Kaladze will replace him, although should the Georgian also suffer injury then Leonardo would really run out of options at the heart of his defence, as Daniele Bonera is struggling for fitness and the only other alternative is 37-year-old Giuseppe Favalli.

La Gazzetta dello Sport believes recent injuries to Silva and Massimo Ambrosini are symptomatic of Leonardo's determination to play the same team every week, no matter the opposition.

Ambrosini had a fever on Tuesday night but still played against FC Zürich. He might be rested at the weekend with Mathieu Flamini deputising in his place.

The destroyer, the gladiator, the warrior, the marauder - Gennaro Gattuso is all this and more, and for the last few years, only his teammate Andrea Pirlo could stake a claim to international notoriety which rivaled with his own. A mediano by vocation, forged in the bear-pits of Scottish football with the Rangers, Gattuso is known for his tenacity, his fighting spirit, his extraordinary man-marking skills and his stamina. His nickname was and still is ‘Ringhio,’ meaning ‘the growl.’ In 2006, with the triumph at the World Cup and some voices in the media whispering that he was more useful on the field than stars like Ronaldinho, the man had reached the top. Today, plagued by injury and inconsistency, subsisting at the margins of a team that is reaping continuous success without him, what kind of future can we envisage for him?


At the age of 31, it is not a stretch to say that Gattuso’s moment is past. When Coach Marcello Lippi took him to the World Cup, Ringhio’s career and physical conditions made for a lethal cocktail of experience and power which turned him into one of the protagonists of the tournament. His return to Milan saw him slowly fade from prominence. The string of injuries that he suffered, most recently the one to his knee which almost made him miss out on the Confederations Cup last June, took his process of entropy to a turning point. I think that this is one of Andrea Tallarita's better pieces - up until the final paragraph, that is. Gattuso's choice is one about what is best for himself or what is best for the national team. In both cases, what is best is what is in question. Does Gattuso deserve a place on the national team at the upcoming World Cup? Would his inclusion be positive of negative? We'd have to see him play consistently for the rest of the season to find out. That aside, whatever desire he has to play (wherever he can) is not an altruistic attempt to simply serve his country and earn the right to do so through an objective, merit-based 'tryout'. Is it better for Gattuso to finish his career in Milan or gamble on one more shot at World Cup glory made possible by changing clubs immediately? That is the question that Rino is trying to answer.

Ancelotti hoping to avoid Milan

ROME - Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti wants to avoid former club AC Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League.

"Chelsea-Milan would be a very particular situation for both of us. The emotional charge would be special," Ancelotti, who won two Champions League titles as Milan coach, told Friday's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I confess that I'd prefer to avoid meeting (Milan coach) Leonardo face-to-face at Stamford Bridge in February. But if it happens, it won't be a problem. Football puts these situations in front of you."

Ancelotti, who will be without the services of Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien due to the African Nations Cup early next year, said Chelsea were unlikely to sign reinforcements to bolster the squad.

"I'm satisfied with the squad I have. In January Drogba, Mikel, Kalou and Essien will be at the African Cup and they will miss four league matches," he said. "But I have very promising lads, such as Fabio Borini and Gael Kakuta."

City have been linked with a move for the AC Milan right-back, but agent Claudio Pasqualin said that the 23-year-old would not be leaving the San Siro.

Abate is apparently happy at the club and will not be making a January switch to the Premiershit big-spenders.

Pasqualin said that the player would be opening contract negotiations with the Italian giants.

"I've also heard these rumours, but they have no basis," Pasqualin told Calciomercatonews.com. "Certainly these things are pleasing because it means that they are all realising the potential of the player.

"The truth is that Abate is very happy at Milan and Milan are very happy with Abate. To confirm this I can anticipate that we will meet soon with Milan to deal with the contract extension."
