Carlo, you may well think of the shoutbox in terms of spontaneity. I have to confess, I don't. It's neither especially more nor especially less spontaneous than the train of chatter with which I've cluttered up this board over the years. I like the shoutbox because it has a different kind of dialogic energy - it invites responses with a greater directness and so has a different kind of fluency. In the shoutbox I suspect we discuss many things with more care and thought than we do in the threads because we can think with one another. If shouts are more provisional then that's also to their advantage - I prefer to think with the guys here than to present already closed, finished thoughts.

Tom, of course The Shoutbox can prompt a greater directness and on occasion gives deeper insight into the individuals concerned here as being real people, as opposed to being just cyber characters. However we view it, the Shoutbox is necessary and I don't think Ed disputes that fact if even only for the light hearted entertainment provided. It also permits us the seemingly more live opportunity to pay the common courtesies of greeting and signing off and I hate the impersonal non option that a thread post only forum creates on that score...makes us seem like a bunch of ill mannered lumps!

We are all in the right here and only the forum loses if we don't accommodate each other, as I said in the Forum Updates.

Bottom line...more posts in the threads and a reinstated Shoutbox!

Jam, I understand your entire point of view, believe me, I'm taking your reasons for not posting as being bona fide! I'm even very well aware some of you guys are friends both face to face as well as online. With that in mind it's not hard to see why you and Steve see no problem or urgency over keeping an active football topic going.

But it's looking like, friends or not, that Ed is adamant in wanting to encourage more members here and sees more active calcio discussions as being the way. Steve's and your opinion may be another matter in saying the only problem is centered around the removal of the Shoutbox. At this point in time we have an impasse as Ed clearly sees not one but two problems.

I can see sense in both sides' argument. But what the hell, it will be resolved.
