Italy coach Marcello Lippi has attempted to bury the Antonio Cassano question once and for all, categorically ruling him out of the World Cup in South Africa.

Cassano's inclusion in the squad has always looked doubtful, and Lippi has now squashed any hopes the Sampdoria man had. The coach has his ideas set in stone, and it appears there will be no further chances for Cassano.

"I am very sorry for Cassano as he is a very good guy, but I have my own ideas, even though an incredible situation has been created," Lippi told L'Espresso.

"Everyone says I am a hard head and arrogant, but my real defect is being coherent. Fans and the papers are always like political parties. Everyone has his own candidate for the national team.

"The reason I don't give explanations regarding my selections is because it would create other situations. I have my own ideas."

Francesco Totti is considering a sensational return to the Italian national team after the team's veterans pleaded him to go back.

The Roma star said he will wait until April 2010 and then decide in accordance with Marcello Lippi whether he is going to join the Azzurri mission to South Africa.

I've seen that in a couple of places, Gio.

So if our club Capitan' has a good enough and injury free season, he may just join la nostra nazionale for Sth Africa. Under those circs who would deny him? There will be more supportive noises for his inclusion than there will be for certain other players!

All he needs is Lippi's "carte blanche" so he can just walk in...

MILAN - Juventus defender Fabio Cannavaro has asked Roma forward Francesco Totti and AC Milan stopper Alessandro Nesta to end their international retirements and return for the Azzurri at next year's World Cup. Totti and Nesta both quit after Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph in Berlin but have been in good form after recovering from career-threatening injuries

"I have talked with Francesco and also Alessandro. We were fortunate to experience Berlin together and we have a strong bond," Juventus defender Cannavaro told reporters late on Monday. "I am always trying to make them rethink, even if it was their decision and that should be respected."

Totti, 33, has said he would consult with Italy coach Marcello Lippi in March or April to see if a return to the national side was possible given his recurring knee problems. Nesta, who is also 33 and was out for year with back trouble, had previously indicated he would stick to his decision to retire.

Media pundits have said it would be unfair to other players if the pair are allowed to walk straight back into the World Cup squad having not contributed to qualification.

Italy seeded for 2010 World Cup

FIFA has confirmed Italy will be one of the eight seeded teams when the World Cup draw is made in South Africa on Friday. It means the Azzurri will avoid favourites Spain and Brazil, who are two of the other seeded teams, in the group stage of the competition.

England, Germany, Netherlands and hosts South Africa are the remaining seeded nations in Friday's draw that gets underway in Cape Town at 1745 GMT.

In recognition of their struggles in qualifying both France and Portugal missed out on the seedings.

Each of the top eight will all be in pot one, with the remaining three pots drawn along regional lines.

The eight seeds will face one time in pot three - a nation from Asia, north or central America, or Oceania - one team from pot three - which has five African and three South American sides - and one from the exclusively European pot four.
