Marchisio faces knee surgery Friday 9 October, 2009

Juventus have been left reeling by the news that Claudio Marchisio needs knee surgery and will be out for at least a month.

Not sure what this has to do with Juventus injuries unless that fat guy who wore the "200" shirt after tender Alex's 200th goal passed out after a heart block. Anyways, I had to look up Bergamot. I didn't know that was a fruit. Pretty interesting claim there. Any studies on that?? Don't be like Ita and make up a random statistic. I'm all for preventative medicine and non-pharmaceutical intervention. Unfortunately, it is not what the American people pay for.

It won't be the first time natural products have pharmacological benefits. Fish Oil, Digitalis, Lidocaine, and opioid derivatives are from all natural product. If they do try to isolate the chemical, there's no guarantee it will have positive effects. Digoxin has many benefits but with it a narrow therapeutic index and can kill in a slight overdose. It looks like they are just putting the stuff in foods but here is the catch zaff. Let's say Pepsi puts the stuff in their drink. They cannot claim it is good for diabetics/lowers cholesterol. The FDA won't allow a company to state on its bottle a claim to improving health or causing pharmacological action. If so, they would have to submit a new drug application and the product would actually have to be a prescription. Not sure how the process goes or what the parameters are, but that is just in summary. Cheerios made a claim that it can lower cholesterol by 20% or so....the FDA stepped in and said they cannot make such a claim on their product. The loophole is that there has to be a study done where people can read it and talk about it. The company can then state "it contains bergamot" but is to have no other claim then that. The public have to read it in newspapers and buy into the hype.

I'll keep my eyes out for it. If Pepsi play it smart and don't actually make the claim it can lower cholesterol suggesting the product can lower cholesterol vs the statin drugs, it could very well be a blockbuster product.

Melo faces spell on the sidelines

Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo looks set to be out for a while after suffering an injury against Maccabi Haifa last night. The Brazil international came off worse following a heavy challenge from Tiago Dutra, which ended his evening after just 58 minutes.

Melo limped off clutching his left calf, which is bad news for Juventus, as he has only just recovered from an injury suffered in that area. The 26-year-old was in tears on the bench and didn’t even join his team-mates when they celebrated a hard fought 1-0 victory.

Speaking after the game, Juventus Coach Ciro Ferrara said: “Melo is very upset with his injury, he suffered an ugly blow.â€
