I've stayed in Sorrento before for various prowls, but decided that Paestum and Salerno were better for the train/bus routes.

In Sicily, I have to say that I liked Palermo a lot, and got a weird thrill seeing the stadio en route from the airport. Maybe I'll start favouring teams based on what I think of the cities. (Roma being my favourite, Catania being my least that won't be difficult)

Well, the old Carlo is back...even if only in avatar form.

Lupa, I at one time had family in Sorrento. Lovely area, what Italia del sud is about. I also had family from Villa Latina, and San Biaggio. But I'm a big city boy and the action of a 24 hour culture appeals more!

Tommaso, the idea of a book thread appeals. But I have the feeling we would be on the same road as with the "Roma Legends" thread.

I wish I had family in places like Sorrento. I only have one family member (cousin by marriage) who has family in Italy and to my chagrin, his family is based in Lazio. When we were talking one time and discovered our team loyalties, I'm not sure who was more horrified. *(I think I am, to know that I'm related by marriage to a Laziale who even played in their youth system - his kids are Milan fans, so even they know better, even if they are -were - trophy hunters)

Maybe an arts and literature thread? I'd love to know what others think of the Ara Pacis museum in Rome, for example.

Lupa, I don't have any relatives that I still know of left over there. There may be a very few second cousins on my father's side, but we have no contact. My last living close relation was an elderly aunt in Filignano, Campobasso...

My family football loyalties? Dio mio, where to start! Obviously they were mostly for our hated blue rivals! My dad however was in the carabinieri and spent a fair part of his twenties in Firenze so La Viola took his interest. One of my female cousins is also a purple chick, while another cugina and her son are devout Milanisti! There were a couple of Napoletani too, and in my own case, between in 1964-67 I, like a lot of other impressionable teenagers was enamoured by the achievements of Inter, the first Italian club to win and retain the European/Intercontinental Cups double!

After a short period of appreciating Anastasi's Juventus and Riva's Cagliari I slowly began to pick up on my true roots and even with the "dark ages" communications of the 1970's as I joke with Gio(Italiamia) I began to get info on our magica Roma but it wasn't until the very late 1970's/early 1980's I actually managed to see film of some of their matches and that was mostly because of the ones where Roma faced British clubs in European competition. Really though, it took newspapers from the local Italian deli and "here one minute, gone the next" short wave radio transmissions to keep me more or less up to date! How quaint by today's standards!

1988-99 was truly my deliverance to the promised land with first cable then satellite tv! Talk about a different world!

I'm working on a books thread, starting with something familiar to most, but it will take a few days to complete as regards finding spare time. Maybe you, Gio, Tommaso, Steve, or someone else might do the honours on an arts thread if any of you can spare some of that very scarce commodity, free time?

Lupa, marco is an architect and he and the Avvocato from time to time like to argue the merits of that museum with one another. marco is a fan; the Avvocato is not. marco's idea to demolish the coliseum and turn the site into a multi-storey car-park is more controversial. I think everyone, though, is prepared to concede that the best bits of the Ara Pacis itself are the elusive little frogs.

Corriere Dello Sport also reported today that the Mezzaroma family is interested in Roma:

La famiglia Mezzaroma potrebbe essere interessata a rientrare nella Roma. Le recenti dichiarazioni di Pietro e Massimo, padre e figlio che portano avanti l’attività di costruttori della famiglia, lasciano aperta la porta. Pietro Mezzaroma nel maggio del 1993 rilevò la Roma con Franco Sensi da Ciarrapico. Rimasero in regime di duopolio per 6 mesi, a novembre Mezzaroma cedette le quote a Franco Sensi. Troppe divergenze, era impossibile andare avanti. Per dieci anni Mezzaroma ha mantenuto un diritto di opzione, che dovrebbe essere venuto a cadere, ma le vicende dello stadio e gli sviluppi societari potrebbero riavvicinare i Mezzaroma…alla Roma.

Pietro e il figlio Massimo non hanno niente a che vedere con il presidente della Lazio, Claudio Lotito, che ha sposato la figlia di Gianni, il fratello di Pietro, padre anche di Marco Mezzaroma, che all’epoca fu imposto dallo zio nel ruolo di amministratore delegato della Roma, oggi compagno del ministro Mara Carfagna. Pietro e Gianni si divisero nel 1994 e pare proprio che l’ingresso in famiglia di Claudio Lotito abbia creato qualche contrasto tra fratelli. Pietro, con l’aiuto dei suoi quattro figli, ha continuato a portare avanti con successo l’attività di costruttore. Massimo, appassionato di sport, era troppo giovane quando il padre prese la Roma per sei mesi.

Due anni fa, nell’ottobre 2007, i Mezzaroma furono convocati da poteri politici e bancari per far parte di un’eventuale cordata di imprenditori per salvare la Roma. All’epoca però i Sensi non ne vollero sapere di mollare. Massimo Mezzaroma sabato scorso ha ribadito la sua disponibilità. Se ci fossero le condizioni, potrebbero rientrare, ma non farebbe parte di una cordata molto numerosa. Potrebbero affiancare un altro imprenditore, disposto a lasciare loro la costruzione dello stadio e l’edilizia residenziale inserita nel progetto. Sulla cubatura dell’edilizia residenziale, la cui entità è ancora molto vaga e alla quale non verrà fatta cenno nella conferenza di oggi, si giocherà la partita della Roma nel prossimo futuro.

Anche nella loro attività di costruttori, portata avanti ancora a conduzione familiare, i Mezzaroma hanno sempre evitato di far entrare dei partner. Ci sono anche altri imprenditori che sono alla finestra, ma che non escono allo scoperto fino a quando non sarà la banca a gestire la vendita della Roma. In questo momento la famiglia Sensi è in condizione di scegliere e per coprire il debito con Unicredit è prevista la dimissione di altri asset, non della Roma. Intanto ieri si è svolto il consiglio d’amministrazione della società. E’ stata letta la relazione sui conti della società. Il consigliere Cappelli, avvocato di Unicredit, ha fatto qualche rilievo.
