Giacomo, remembering Sor Carletto, a man whose heart is still giallorosso fills me with so many mixed emotions and memories. Mazzone as you know in 1993 inherited a very good Uefa Cup standard Roma team, in fact, despite going through four different coaches, Spinosi, Radice, Bianchi, and Boskov, many of us thought we were on our way back to greatness. He stabilised us but we couldn't win anything. When he left in 1996, we had the worst Roman nightmare I've seen in my lifetime and never want to see a repeat of...Carlos Bianchi, Nils Liedholm and Ezio Sella. Three managers within one season...and some guys in here think we are suffering now! Pffft!

Incidentally, as you'll also remember, that's when they retired the old crest...1997 after that debacle, though I see it has been re-instated on our third choice shirt for this season!

I was to say the least disappointed with Zeman. Yes, granted, he brought us out of those black days, but his Foggia-esque tactics were also his undoing. Relying on your ability to be able to constantly outscore your opposition puts more of a physical and mental workload on a team's plate than is necessary. He only wanted to entertain, he said, if we remember when he was sacked...well, it was dramatic end to end stuff at times, much more entertaining for a neutral than a romano and it was as much that as the fact he didn't win anything that made the Old Man bring in Capello to tighten our defence. I don't really want to also remember the successful Lazio of the time which also contributed...

But having to constantly outscore our opposition is what we've had to do this past couple of seasons and if yesterday afternoon's game was an example of our coming season then nothing has changed! Tommaso speaks of slackness and Kosice's will to win in their own backyard.

All true but had this been the second leg we'd have had to bust a gut to win and my points are that though I do agree with you it wasn't the team's concentration issues that led to the end of Mazzone and Zeman with us, I think the coming Genoa game is the probable yet inexcusable contributor to the troops slackening off against Kosice and this affair so late in the week has handed Genoa even more of an advantage than it just being a home game for them on Sunday...

Hopefully that's an accurate and not just benefit of the doubt judgment because if il mister cannot win his on-going struggle to educate the boys into holding their concentration then we'd better hope we can afford to buy out his contract come the season's end if he's not getting through to them.

Though unarguably connected, tactics and man-management are two different issues! Having one and not the other is the kiss of death for a tactician...

Gio...ma che mercato! I noticed in RomaGialloRossa, as I type, the Burdisso move is now confirmed. Just as you thought, if il mister wants him, he can play against Genoa tomorrow! They didn't give the details of the deal though...

But...I'd laugh if it wasn't so tragic at another piece I saw. Our principessa phoned De Laurentis at Napoli and asked for Santacroce on loan. His response? Will you give me Totti? :roll:

The list of players called for Genoa was made before the Burdisso deal was completed...

I'm going to Cork v Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croker, but hope to be back in time for kick-off this evening. It'll be interesting to see who does start at centre-half, if Spalletti does throw Burdisso into the mix or if he shows faith in Andreolli, or goes for one (if not both) of Cassetti or Riise in the middle. Hopefully it will be Motta, Burdisso, Andreolli and Riise, which I think is the best option. If Andreolli is not given the chance then I think he will almost certainly move to Bari or somewhere for the season. Its also sort of pathetic to see that, on the first day of the season and with a few injuries already, we have no natural central-defenders or strikers on the bench, which is very worrying, but that is the way this season is going to be, I fear. I'm not to confident about a result, a draw would be very welcome, but we are going to have to work very hard for it and the midfield in particular needs a massive game to help protect our weak and untested back-line. Forza Roma.

Looking forward to the season starting back from a lack-of-football-in-my-life sense, but it is very difficult to foresee a positive season. As always, we have come out of the summer window weaker than when we went into it - the inevitability of which doesn't make it any easier to take. The frustration can really boil over at times - the empty Curva last season held up as an easy example. It seems its business as usual at the club, but elsewhere in Italy the other teams have all strengthened.

So a question floats across the mind of the ponderer: are we now a UEFA/Europa Cup side? Is that the clubs aim? It seems to me that the side, at present, will struggle to achieve at a level higher than that. This team could likely fail the test of a top four finish again - signaling financial deficits and player exits. The time to invest was two/three years ago, at a time when we could have pushed Inter further and most likely beaten them to the title. With the other sides out of the equation, it beggers belief that we didn't attempt to secure ourselves as top contenders. Instead, we bewilderingly strengthened Inter - albeit through financial inadequacy than direct sale.

The time to invest was then. Any investment now will simply be playing catch up - again business as usual in Roma. We are going to suffer this season and continue circling of the drain under this (mis)management.
