Lega Calcio award Italian rights – 31 Jul, 09 | Italy | Television
Sky Italia and Mediaset have both been awarded by the Italian Lega Calcio to screen live football matches from the Serie A competition. Sky has secured the Platinum Live package that includes both satellite and IPTV rights and will pay EUR 1.16 billion for the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons.
Mediaset won the Gold Live package that includes digital terrestrial transmission and IPTV, and will pay EUR 437 million for the two-year package. Sky will air all the matches, while Mediaset viewers will see matches involving the top 12 teams. The two deals will bring in EUR 15 million more than the minimum price asked by the Lega Calcio.
This is the first time that the domestic Italian league television rights are sold in a centralized bid while previously the rights were sold individually by the clubs.
Lega Calcio is expected to enter into negotiations with other bidders for the 2010/11 season free-to-air highlights package and radio rights with packages priced EUR 28 million and EUR 3.8 million respectivly.
The Italian antitrust authority is probing the rights sale, suspicious that it was set up to benefit pay TV operators and not viewers.
Ed, interesting that La7 didn't get a mention...what this will do to their Cartapiu digital terrestrial and satellite options I can't imagine unless they have some sort of deal which permits them to broadcast live via satellite to bona fide viewers outwith Italy as Rai do. I can't see this not being contested any more than I can see Rai NOT hanging on to the free highlights for domestic Italian viewing!
The Anti Trust authority whoever they are will not be the only ones asking questions we can be assured!
Re/my post 3 above...you're right of course. You know me in the small hours when I'm entertaining the Reverend Jack!!! I've done a copy/paste to the Transfers thread if you wish now to delete the one here...
I was so glad to read today that Dossena is leaving the EPL and returning to Italy to play for Napoli. But it doesn't make up for the disappointment I feel about Rosina, once considered a real star in the making, being almost certain to go to Russia. His price has dropped from an estimated €18mil to around €6.5mil! It just shows what can happen when a player passes up the chance to move on from a club when he could and should have...in his case, before il granata hit hard times!
Ladies and gentlemen, introducing Lega Calcio's very own Chelsea/Manchester City -

Newly promoted Bari have announced a deal to sell the club to Texan businessman Timothy L Barton has been reached.
The Matarrese family had been in negotiations for the sale for several weeks, but had kept the identity of the buyer a secret.
This afternoon the official Bari website released a statement confirming talks were successful with JMJ Holdings, real estate firm based in Dallas.
“Following the meeting between Alessio Mora, an advisor for the holding company interested in buying Bari Calcio, and representative Salvatore Matarrese, the two parties jointly announce a valuation price has been agreed.
“The negotiations will continue and the paperwork completed by August 18.
“Mr Mora confirms that the business interested in this transaction is Texas-based JMJ Holdings, led by Timothy L Barton.â€
Italian chief wants limit on foreigners – August 12, 2009
Italian football should restore foreign player quotas to ensure domestic talent has the chance to flourish, the head of the nation's professional footballers association (AIC) said on Wednesday.
"Useless foreign players have been flooding our championship for ages, making club presidents spend too much and taking places from Italians, who are often better" Sergio Campana told La Gazzetta dello Sport's website.
"I'm going to propose the introduction of a limit on foreigners in the regulations. It's legally possible both for non-European Union and EU citizens. We have to go back to the past when there was a real limit on foreign players."
Restrictions on EU players risk facing legal challenges over whether they breach European Law on freedom of movement.
Fans Without Membership Cards Will Be Banned From Serie A Away Games From 2010 – 15 Aug 2009 14:14:35
New security regulations are set to come into affect in Italy this season, meaning fans will have to sign up to a membership scheme. According to a recent report from Ansa.it, it seems the plans to implement a membership scheme in Italy have taken a controversial turn with the news that any supporters who refuse to sign up will be denied access to away fixtures from January.
With the new ‘fans membership card’ set to be introduced in 2010, all those wishing to attend games on the peninsula will now be subjected to more rigorous checks, unless they have signed up to the voluntary scheme.
Given the widespread objection to the proposal, there were questions about how many fans would bother applying for the voluntary card. However, following the recent announcement from the Italian Home Office, it seems supporters now have little choice, if they wish to follow their clubs on the road.
Italian league split approved by calcio officials – Reuters – August 25, 2009
A landmark split between Serie A and Serie B aimed at boosting football's flagging fortunes in Italy has been approved, league officials told reporters following a meeting on Tuesday. The plan, prompted by the desire of top sides to match the success of England's Premiershit after it broke away from the other Football League divisions in 1992, was announced in April and has now been ratified after a meeting of club presidents.
Serie A has slipped behind the Premiershit and Spain's La Liga in terms of prestige in recent years and top flight bosses hope going it alone will streamline resources. The two professional divisions will be run as separate entities having previously been managed together, although Maurizio Beretta, former head of Italy's employers' association, has been appointed as president of Serie A and B.
Club presidents failed to agree, however, on a proposal from the Interior Ministry to introduce special supporter cards which fans would have to carry to enter matches. The government, trying to stamp out soccer hooliganism in Italy, believes the idea would make it easier to track troublemakers and wants the scheme to start in January.
Abete reflects on Ballon d’Or list – Monday 19 October, 2009
The President of the FIGC Giancarlo Abete says the absence of an Italian on the list of 30 players nominated for the Ballon d’Or should make us all reflect. In total only four players from Serie A made it on to the list. They include Inter trio Julio Cesar, Maicon and Samuel Eto’o together with Juventus playmaker Diego.
Two of last year’s stars, namely Kaka and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are also on the list, but there isn’t room for a single Italian player.
“If today there is a problem with our football it’s in its centrality to the international reality,â€
Worldwide Serie A TV rights go for 181.5 million euros Fri Nov 6, 2009 7:51pm GMT Email | Print | Share | Single Page [-] Text [+]
ROME, Nov 6 - Serie A's worldwide broadcasting rights for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons have been sold to the MP & Silva international sports media company for 181.5 million euros ($270 million), the Italian Soccer League said on Friday.
Acceptance of the bid is pending approval by Italy's competition watchdog, the league said in a statement on its website (www.lega-calcio.it).
Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis said the decision was taken despite opposition from his club and Turin giants Juventus.
"Only we and Juventus voted against. Our (TV) rights are worth much more," de Laurentiis was quoted as saying on La Gazzetta dello Sport's website (www.gazzetta.it)
"Unfortunately, a little egg today was preferred to a goose with a golden egg, which could have been today too, not tomorrow."
The Serie A highlights package and radio rights in Italy have been sold to state broadcaster Rai for 28.5 million euros for the 2010-11 season and 30 million for 2011-12.
The league said it would contest a Milan court decision to stop it assigning the live satellite broadcasting rights for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons to Sky while an appeal against this move by a small network is considered.
MP & Silva has TV rights for a variety of football competitions and its clients include the BBC, ESPN and Eurosport, according to its website (www.mpsilva.com)
It is too early in the competition to get too excited about this, though, but it is encouraging. The UEFA coefficients take into account the points from the previous 5 European seasons (and both, the UCL and Europa league), and it will be very important for Serie A teams to do well again in Europe, lest they lose a place to Germany (Germany has had a higher UEFA ranking than Italy for the last two seasons. We're only above Germany in the overall coefficient rankings due to the pre-Calciopoli performances, and Milan winning the UCL). With tough games coming up for Serie A teams in the UCL (Barcelona, 'Pool, Bayern), however, it will be difficult to keep up on top of the UEFA standings. Even if all 4 Italian teams make it through to the round of 16, and if teams like Bayern and Wolfsburg are "demoted" to the Europa league, it is still possible for the Germans to leapfrog over Italy in the UEFA points standings. The important thing for Serie A teams (including Genoa and Roma) is to continue winning.
From what I understand, points are given as follows:
For a particular season:
2 points for a win in the CL or Europa League (EL).
1 point for a draw in the CL or EL.
Bonus points for reaching the CL group stage or EL round of 16.
Bonus points for reaching the second round of the CL.
Bonus points for reaching the quarterfinals, semifinals and final of the CL or the EL.
Points obtained by all the teams playing in a particular league (eg. all Serie A teams playing in the CL and EL) are added up.
The total number of points obtained is then divided by the number of teams of a particular league playing in the CL + EL.
Do this for the previous five seasons, and adding it all up gives the UEFA coefficient.
Gah. That's the best I could do explaining.
Important thing: in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, the Bundesliga performed better than Serie A (refer to that wiki link). If Serie A teams do not perform well this season, we risk losing a spot to the Germans.
