Enticing players to sign with lucrative contracts is why Juventus are having so much difficulty in selling them later, says Giovanni Spinella

Juventus needed to re-establish their status as a major force following Calciopoli. The club thus signed the players that they felt would serve. As everyone knows, this has not been an unqualified success. For every excellent Mohammed Sissoko and Amauri, there has been a Sergio Almiron, an Andrade, a Tiago, a Christian Poulsen, men who have disappointed during their time in Turin.

Selling these kind of flops, to recoup some of the money originally invested on them, is obviously a ploy that the club have considered. The problem is actually doing so. And it is a similar scenario with players like David Trezeguet, a striker whose time in Turin may have come to an end.

In all cases, it comes down to the generous terms that the club’s management offered the players when they were first signed or retained. Post Calciopoli, not only did the club need to recover their position, but also their attraction. Offering generous wages was deemed the way to do so. And this is where Juventus’ situation took on a Catch-22 aspect.

The terms used to sign players are now the main element that is keeping those same men from moving. It would seem that some are more than happy to stay on the bench and play football in order to retain their contracts, as if they are aware that no other club will offer them as much as what they can get in Turin – especially after their recent disappointing seasons.

This might be an ungenerous interpretation of these players’ motives. It could be they wish to prove their worth, desirous of that second chance that in a way Juventus themselves asked of Italy and Europe once they re-emerged from Serie B. But with prospects of match time dwindling as newer players come into the side this explanation loses in potency.

One would hope Juventus have learned a few lessons. To start with, offer a less generous basic salary, tying additional money to players’ performance so that if they don’t deliver they have their own incentive to leave.

Another thought is this. Juventus should spend a little less time hungrily looking for players abroad and more time developing their own home-grown talent. After all, is Poulsen superior to Antonio Nocerino? The Old Lady’s books would then look healthier and the club probably stronger.

From what I've seen, Trez has been pretty good in the pre-season. Pretty classy finish on his offside goal.
