Avellino Back In Serie B

Avellino are back in Serie B despite last season’s relegation, as they have replaced Messina, following the Sicilian side’s financial collapse.

The Biancoverdi were on their way down to the third tier of Italian football, after finishing 19th in Serie B last season.

However, the Southerners have now been reinstated after financially crippled Messina dropped out of the Italian professional leagues altogether.

The Sicilians finished last term in a comfortable 14th position, but the level of debt for the owning Franza family became unbearable, and they were first barred from competing in this season’s Serie B, before then being banished to the Serie D amateur leagues.

Messina have been replaced by Avellino due to the fact they finished highest in the Serie B relegation zone last term. The Irpini will be included in today’s fixture draw for the upcoming season.

Parma fires Cagni and hires Guidolin

PARMA, Italy (AP) - Parma fired Luigi Cagni and hired Francesco Guidolin as its coach Tuesday after dropping to 14th place after six games in Serie B. Parma was relegated to the second division for this season after 18 years in Serie A.

"I knew it was going to be a tough season, but I thought we could have started a bit better," said Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi, who has now presided over seven coaches in less than two years.

"I wasn't expecting six victories, because it's a new category and the opponents are all hyped up to play us, but I wasn't expecting these last four results either, two losses and two draws really hurt."

Parma has six points, seven behind league leader Sassuolo.

Guidolin, the former Palermo coach, signed a one-year contract with an option for a second season if the club is promoted back into Serie A.

"You don't get into Serie A just because you're called Parma," Guidolin said. "You've got to start off strong right away. We're still not that far behind but we are closer to the relegation zone than the promotion zone. We need good results right away."

Guidolin will make his debut Saturday in the regional derby with Modena.

Eder – 'The Kaka Of Serie B'

Frosinone forward Eder has been the revelation of Serie B this season, and he is proud with his label as the ‘Kaka of Frosinone’. The 21-year-old Brazilian is on loan at Frosinone from Empoli, and he has already bagged four goals this season, which makes him the joint-top scorer in the division.

These have included some stunning strikes, and Eder’s skillful, slalom runs have drawn comparisons with a more famous Brazilian in the form of Milan’s Kaka.

Eder has been dubbed the ‘Kaka of Frosinone’ by his club supporters, and it is a label he is proud of.

Soccer-Italy's Serie B agrees deal to avert strike

MILAN, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Struggling clubs in Italy's second division agreed to a 65-million euro ($89 million) handout from Serie A on Wednesday after fears they would call a strike if they did not receive the money they needed.

Serie B sides had asked for more than 65 million euros but have agreed to the figure rather than causing a bigger dispute with the top flight clubs, some of whom favour a one-division Super League which would leave the second tier more exposed.

"It's averted a problem with the championship but with this money there will be clubs that won't make it to Christmas," Aldo Spinelli, president of Serie B side Livorno, told reporters.

Serie B clubs are struggling financially because of the world economic crisis, falling attendances and the lack of a television deal last season.

Good to see both Bari and Parma (presumably) gain promotion to Serie A. They're both good clubs with a good fan base, and two of only three teams who have averaged over 10,000 attendance this season (the other being Salernitana). I'd also like to see Brescia get promoted.

Brescia completed an impressive comeback after trailing 2-0 in front of their concerned fans, grabbing a point out of this four-goal thriller. Triestina were clinical in pouncing on two defensive errors either side of the half-time break, as Testini sprung the offside trap and Volpe went clear on goal following Berardi's fresh-air clearance. Caracciolo came to the rescue with a decisive brace of headers, both from Baiocco assists. Brescia nearly won it at the death after Gorgone's dismissal, but Agazzi palmed away a Zambelli snapshot.

Reggina’s honeymoon period under Ivo Iaconi is already over, as Empoli comfortably won this battle of the big clubs. The Amaranto thought they had broken through their crisis last week, but just before the interval Marianini was allowed a free header. Coralli made the points safe on the hour mark with a smart lob from the edge of the box, while Eder could’ve added to the tally with a free kick that hit the bar. Reggina had the chance to at least score a consolation goal in stoppages when Antonazzo brought down Cascione, but Bassi saved Brienza’s penalty.

Frosinone wasted the opportunity to close back on the leaders and instead tumble further down the standings. This game was delayed by 20 minutes because of a freak thunderstorm over the stadium. The pitch remained soggy and all the goals came in an intense five-minute spell. Scaglia made the most of a defensive error and Calil's header drew level almost immediately, but Pederzoli thumped in the winner for Gallipoli.

Padova move into fourth place, but Salernitana shot themselves in the foot on new Coach Grassadonia's debut. Ferraro had given the visitors a shock lead just eight minutes in on Jadid's assist, but Di Nardo nodded in Petrassi's cross to equalise. The turning point came on the hour mark, as the referee awarded a soft penalty for Soncin's challenge on Galasso. Fava took his protests too far and was sent off as Soncin converted. Lecce salvaged a point to go clear at the top of the table after leaving it late to net a 2-2 draw at Torino. The visitors took the lead in Turin through Corvia, but fell behind after the break. Firstly Bianchi blasted home a penalty after Di Michele was brought down before the same player grabbed what looked liked the winner in the 90th minute. But Lecce fought back with a goal from substitute Baclet.
