APPIANO GENTILE - Inter captain Javier Zanetti gave the following interview to Italian television station RaiDue before Monday morning's training session:

Zanetti, Roma are the only team with maximum points in the league. Are they your most dangerous rivals for the Scudetto?
"We're talking about a great team, but it's still too soon to talk about favourites for the Scudetto. They will certainly be there fighting until the end."

Adriano showed great signs of recovery yesterday. What role can he play in this Inter team?
"I think that Adri played a great match yesterday. He worked very hard and made his contribution to the victory against Catania in a game which wasn't easy. The only thing he didn't do was score, but the goal will come sooner or later. The important thing is that he feels good. We will all be happy if we see the Adriano we saw yesterday."

And Adriano appeared to be in good physical form yesterday....
"In these past two weeks he has had the chance to work well with his team-mates who weren't away with their national teams. This work done has been very useful for him."

Why have Inter made a slightly slow start to the season?
"It's only a slow start in terms of results. We lost the Super Cup against Roma and then we could have done without that draw against Udinese when the goal came in added time after being reduced to ten men. However, we know our potential and we hope to be winners at the end."

Your new Champions League campaign starts on Wednesday. Do you still have last season's evening in Valencia on your minds?
"That was an unlucky match because we got knocked out of the Champions League despite having had the potential to advance. But football is like this and a bad match is enough for you to get knocked out of the Champions League. Let's hope this new adventure can end with a different result."

Against Fenerbahce in Istanbul you will be without several injured players and those disqualified after the Valencia events. An emergency situation?
"Yes, especially in defence because we are numbered. But those who play will give their all to get a positive result."

Champions League, Serie A and Tim Cup. Which one is top priority for you?
"Inter can't choose one competition. We'll be fighting on all three fronts and we hope to win everything. If I had to choose just one? The championship is always very important. The Champions League is really fascinating but doing well in the championship helps you do well in the cup."

Ex-Nerazzurri players Recoba and Vieiri both scored goals yesterday. Which of the two pleased you most?
"Both. I have wonderful memories of both of them. I'm happy for Bobo's goal. He had been working for this for a long time. And I'm happy for Chino's goal. He has moved to Torino and has immediately shown all his talent. Did I call either of them? No, but I certainly will do."

Were you expecting Udinese to beat Juventus in Turin?
"Udinese played a trick on us in the first round at San Siro and went on to lose at home after playing badly. They played a great game yesterday and won against a Juventus side that everyone thinks can win the Scudetto."

Do you think Juventus are a title candidate?
"The same goes for what I said about Roma. It's too soon to talk about candidates or favourites for the Scudetto. I think there will be four or five teams fighting until the end."

Could a draw in next Sunday's match between Roma and Juventus be the ideal result for you?
"Maybe, but first we have to think about our match in the Champions League and then think about winning our championship game. After that we will look at the results from the other grounds."

Who is the most important man for Inter?
"The group, because one man can never win anything by himself. We are all working in the same direction and we're fighting for all our objectives. With this mentality we can go far."

When will Javier Zanetti stop playing?
"I still haven't asked myself this. I hope to continue fighting, making my contribution and trying to be useful and important to help the team reach its goals."

But will Javier Zanetti's last match be in an Inter shirt?
"Definitely."

Corriere dello Sport says Figo has met with Galaxy supremo Alexi Lalas about moving to the United States to close his career.

Currently in charge of Finland's national team, Hodgson will join the football staff at Inter as a mediator with national federations.

Inter president Massimo Moratti has become exasperated over the attitude of some national teams towards his players after seeing Patrick Vieira and Cristian Chivu return from international duty injured this week.

Moratti will lean on Hodgson's diplomacy skills and relationships with FIFA and UEFA powerbrokers to earn a better deal for Inter.

Rakitic On InterÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Radar

Both the German and Italian press are reporting that Inter Milan have taken a keen interest in Schalke shooting star Ivan Rakitic.

The 19-year-old offensive midfielder only just arrived in Gelsenkirchen from Basel this summer, but his performances for both Schalke and Croatia since then have been so impressive that the Royal Blues already have to be weary of deep-pocketed suitors.

Inter are said to be leading the list of what for Schalke are unwelcome admirers as they have been keeping tabs on the technically superb youngster since his early Basel days.

Rakitic is something of a controversial figure in Switzerland, as he recently elected to play for the country of his parents despite having been born and raised in Switzerland and having been nurtured in its football system al the way up to the U-21 Swiss side.
