Report: Fabio Cannavaro Wants No 29 Shirt At Juventus

Real Madrid and Italy central defender Fabio Cannavaro is in talks with Juventus over a shock return to the club he left in the summer of 2006 in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal that saw the Turin giants relegated to Serie B for the first time in their history.

The Neapolitan has not been offered a contract extension by the Merengues and his agent Enrico Fedele and Juve directors have confirmed that negotiations are underway.

And Turin-based daily La Stampa claims this morning that the 35-year-old has already settled on a shirt number and will not ask Jonathan Zebina for his No 5.

It is suggested that he will wear the No 29 instead - and while it could seem an odd choice, his detractors in the peninsula are already suggesting it is just a clever ploy to ‘suck up’ to Juve fans who are expected to oppose the transfer.

Yesterday, Cannavaro promised that he will smooth things over with the supporters who feel he betrayed the club in 2006, and reiterated that he won two Scudetti in Turin, even though they were stripped because of Calciopoli.

Officially, therefore, Juve still have 27 titles to their name. You do the math…
