'Tec, it was definitely Sacchi. He continued on until just after Euro'96 by which point we were glad to see him go! Don't get me wrong, I thought Sacchi an excellent tactician. I loved watching the pressing game his grande Milan played! But when it came to the all important point of man-management as a national team coach...he failed miserably. It was well enough documented at the time that Sacchi had a problem in dealing with so many players with big reputations. I remember only too well Panucci's criticism of him, stopping just short of calling him a coward, saying Sacchi's own fear when facing difficult opposition affected the players! Cesare Maldini was Sacchi's replacement.

Ed & Gio...as you know, myself, Steve and 'Moldo also briefly mentioned the new stadium complex/football museum a couple of pages back...

I see Steve's point over such an idea generating profit and we all seem to be in agreement that this is a project for the future when we are on our financial feet again, rather than for now.

My point was that since Rosella is supposedly to be using her own money for the museum part then we have no real say in the matter. But no-one is going to tell me she is not using club funds also. I understand her love for the old man and her desire to pay a public tribute to his memory. As Pauly says, under those circumstances, naming the new stadium after Franco Sensi is only right.

Let me hypothesise...suppose the personal desires of la nostra principessa are forced into practice to the detriment of the club via her family business debts. As a business, AS Roma's affairs are legally seperate from Italpetroli but they are nonetheless connected through our presidente. You guys tell me...if Rosella uses money that ought to go to Italpetroli then at best we get our new stadium complex but strengthening the player roster still leaves us dependent on bargain basement shopping methods. At worst, how much closer could the cost of this project be to pushing her creditors to the point where she, her mother and sister are out on their asses?

Gio, I didn't realise both past and present city mayors had an interest in such a project! Could we presume there may be a grant of city funds to contribute towards the new stadium/museum?

Gio, of course Rosella has her paws in the cash register and is trying to do more juggling than we'd see in a damn three ring circus! I didn't think we were talking such an amount of money...300-500 billion because the "listed" buldings and historical landmarks must be preserved in addition to construction costs for the new stadium complex! Further interesting news!

Well now, I really can't see this happening. Not even in Italy can the sun rise in the west! Even with the city council's financial backing! As I say, my fear was that she would selfishly try to force those plans through rather than give strengthening the team absolute priority! Now I'm wondering if she isn't planning to take what money she can and run...

Yes, I see what you mean about the mayors...finance and politics go hand in hand. What did Lucchese say in Godfather 3? Finance is the gun and politics is knowing when to pull the trigger!

Tom, I think everybody tried to advise Sacchi both at USA 94 and Euro 96. The ridiculous part was the way he tried to make his quitting look like he couldn't refuse Berlusconi's offer to return to Milan, rather than own up to the fact he was quitting as nazionale CT before he was pushed!

as for the projected costs for a new stadium, i think that would be millions rather than billions, despite the project being noted as having supplemental retail and/or cultural (museum?) components over and above the stadium function itself.

You could lower the price by getting a company to put it's name on the stadium.

MacDonalds or something.

I'm sure Ita would approve.

Yeah, that number has to be in millions not billions. Roma's colors are conducive for a MCD sponsorship.

Guys...Glad, Andrew, Steve, I must say I kinda thought Gio meant millions rather than billions! I guess he was thinking about a client in a pending court battle at the same time as he posted!
