i realize the wrath of Shield but Vucinic doesnt move when he's there. i personally dont blame him, he's not adjusted to be a midfield player. what im wondering is why Spalletti never used Vucinic up top and Totti in central trequartista?? with the left and right wingers, Totti could potentially be feeding to a selection of 3 players without having to play post-up and waiting for their runs to succeed
I meant to comment on The LitM after a few people lambasted him for his performance against Siena. My we are a patient bunch. We all agree that he played well pre-season and was very impressive in the SuperCoppa, and solid enough in the opening game against Palermo, and then, opps, one slightly below-par outing against Siena and its the end of the LitM, he's shite, get him out of there...
Pocari, you said it all yourself really. "He was playing as a striker in a left wing position". There you go. Maybe its because he IS a striker playing in a left-wing position? What do we expect, that he suddenly develops Mancini-esqu stepover abilities or Taddei-like dribbling? There is no doubt that he is delighted to be getting starts in the team but it is still obvious to me that he is uncomfortable out of position. I don't think its that he's lazy, but more that he has to learn to adapt more to the wing, and he's not going to learn that overnight, or over the course of a few months training, for that matter. He is a striker, a goalscorer, and so all of his career he has been used to getting the ball at this feet, slowing it down, then turning and shooting or laying it off. Adapting from that to doing blistering runs down the wings and getting used to our fast-paced system hitting the opposition at speed is not going to come easily. Like you said, Pocari, he's not really adjustable to fill that role, altough Spalletti continues to believe he is, so maybe in time he can get more out of him there, but there's no doubt what position he can be most benificial to this team in.
I would love to see him upfront with Totti behind him, but Spalletti has his system now and it is working, but I still feel at some point he must allow for the possibility of adapting andd changing it slighty. Not necessarily playing Totti as trequartista again, but something like having Mancini and Giuly (or whoever) as wingers – much the same as they operate now – and then have Vucinic and Totti rotating and floating between the trequartia/prima-punta positions. Have them both as strikers when we're attacking, then later have one push back a bit more and let them adjust themselves. They have an understanding and could develop that a lot more in such a situation. Vucinic has goals in him, I don't think anyone can deny that, and what better man to get them out of him then the creative genuous of Totti? Not a bad strike partnership if you ask me.
Antunes: I belong at Roma Friday 14 September, 2007 –
Roma’s Portuguese Under-21 new arrival Antunes admits that he's living a dream, but won't be overawed by life at the Stadio Olimpico. The 20-year-old left-back joined the Giallorossi from Bwin Liga minnows Pacos Ferreira on a season loan this summer and is determined to take advantage of any chance he gets.
“I’m totally captivated by this club as it is totally different from where I was before,â€
Statement from Stephen Ireland: “I wish to explain the circumstances surrounding my departure from the Republic of Ireland international squad following the Euro 2008 qualifier against Slovakia in Bratislava last Saturday. “When the game ended our manager Stephen Staunton took me outside the dressing room into the corridor along with the Ireland team doctor. He told me that they had taken a call from my girlfriend, Jessica, and she said my grandmother had died.
“I was deeply shocked because I believed it was my maternal grandmother who had brought me up from when I was five. The manager went back into the dressing room to get my phone and when I got it I immediately rang my girlfriend to get more details.
“My girlfriend was distraught and explained that she had just suffered a miscarriage. Jessica said she was very lonely and wanted me to come home. She said she thought they might let me home quicker if they thought my grandmother had died.
“When I finished the call I told the manager and doctor that my grandmother had died and because we were very close I wanted to go home immediately. The manager said that was no problem and he would get the FAI to sort it out. “The FAI hired a private jet to get me home and I flew out of Bratislava the following morning. Before I left I told the FAI media officer that the name of my grandmother was Patricia Tallon.
“Early on Monday morning I got a phone call from Stephen Staunton telling me that the FAI had discovered my grandmother in Cork was not dead. He wanted to know what was going on and I told him that there had been a mistake and it had been my father’s mother. I told him her name was Brenda Kitchener, that she lived in London. “Jessica and I were still very upset over the miscarriage so we flew home to Ireland for a few days.
“On Thursday, I got a phone-call from Manchester City stating that the FAI had discovered that my grandmother, Brenda Kitchener, was also alive. I decided at that stage that I must tell truth and admit I had told lies.
“I realise now that it was a massive mistake on my part to tell the FAI and Manchester City that my grandmothers had died and I deeply regret it. The miscarriage that Jessica suffered last Saturday has caused both of us a lot of heartache and had caused us both to panic. “It was wrong and I sincerely apologise, particularly as I caused a lot of problems for many people. “I would like to apologise to my grandmothers and all my family for any distress I have caused them.
“Ireland manager Stephen Staunton, my Ireland team-mates, the backroom staff and the FAI also deserve my profound apologies. I truly appreciate that the extraordinary lengths they went to put my welfare first and ensure I got home from Slovakia as quickly as possible.
“I am also sorry for causing Manchester City any embarrassment and apologise to the supporters of both Manchester City and Ireland for misleading them and the media.
“I love playing for my country and am grateful for the understanding Mr Staunton and the FAI have shown to me since I told them the truth. “I have learnt a valuable lesson from this mess and hope those I have hurt by my actions will forgive me.â€
