Oh there were plus factors to be taken from that debacle last night for those of us who can look beyond the obvious.
Filipe and D'Alessandro as I already said...and am I still the only one here who thinks Iaquinta could do a job for us if he becomes available as is possible?
Tommaso, just as you, I also could not condone Panucci's recent behaviour...but I also said we'd have reason to be grateful for still having his services, at least till the season's end. Maybe he will yet be given his "golden handshake" deal!
Its hard not to be demoralized, but let's keep up the good spirit! What it all boils down to is circumstances, and if we had better bodies available to play, it would have been a reverse score from the one last night, and, a reverse place in the standings.
Carlo and Maro, I had the exact thoughts about Filipe and D'Alessandro. Given the little amount of play they've had so far, we can feel good about the chances that we might have with them in the future. Give them two boys more playing time, and they should mature into something special, the future should look bright! D'Alessandro kind of got himself a hell-of-a-chance, when he got past that defender on the right side and shot for goal, but the ball almost skimmed the right post.....He showed skill and speed on that play, didn't he?.....
Also, Riise has truly grown into a great player and asset for our team, hasn't he? Ever since the Xmas break, he has made some tremendous plays for our team. What I mostly admire is his hustle and willingness to just throw himself out there to make a good play. I hope Riise continues to get better, which I can't see why he wouldn't, and we will have ourselves a special player next year. Riise is due to score some tunderous goals for our team
The end of that article sums it up well:
"Roma's push for a Champions League qualification place looks to be in serious jeopardy unless their injury list gets smaller."

Pauly, I wouldn't get too excited about the youngsters - or the future. Riise has been very solid, I think, and has contributed grit and work-rate. He will never, however, be a "special player." A good contributor, yes; a special player, not so much. Nor can you really judge Filipe or d'Alessandro on what they showed last night. Filipe played well, for sure, and showed plenty of composure and maturity and so we should be pleased with and for him. However, he didn't get forward much and he didn't make too many telling interventions defensively; that is, he did a good, composed job but he made life simpler for himself by sticking to one job and while Spags praised him for having a little bit of everything that goes into a midfield player, time will tell whether he's got enough. He was not out of his depth yesterday, but he was also part of a side which lost 4-1 at home. And all d'Alessandro showed was that he's got a bit of technique and a nice turn of pace - that's plenty to start with, but time will tell quite what it all adds up to in the end. I'd like to see Spags give him a bit more of a go, but there are plenty of players who've shown a bit of promise at 17 and ended up with extremely ordinary careers.
As for Iaquinta, Carlo, I know he's your long-lost love-child and I would never want to compromise the strength of that relationship, but I've also defended him in the past - primarily last summer when the Interisti were chortling that anyone could think he was worth as much as Suazo. He's not an outstanding player and he's technically clunky enough to have made a painful pairing with Perrotta, for instance, but he works hard and his movement is good. He didn't do anything special last night - the first goal was a lovely one, but one you'd expect most Serie A strikers to nail, and the second one was, of course, a simple finish. Still, I think his movement is much better than Vooch's, for instance, as you can see in the way he finds space. He doesn't have Mirko's touch, but his work and movement creates for others. I'd certainly prefer him to Baptista at the moment. But then I'd probably take Phil Neville and Robbie Savage over Baptista at the moment. Or Kris Boyd.
Another great article from Goal.com...what Jeremy has said and what they are saying he said are two different things. Those people really enjoy to tell bullshit and create situations that are not supposed to be.
From their article: “I am playing for a side where Totti comes before everything else,â€
"Ireland... Ireland... together standing tall, shoulder, to shoulder..." (blah blah etc etc, I hate that song). All hail the fighting Irish, Six Nations and Grand Slam Champions for the first time in 61 years! Yerhay. What a dramatic win, what a great game, what a team. Its madness over here, the country is gripped in rugby fever. There's a big reception planned in town for the homecoming of the team, and they will be passing by my house from the airport on the way in. BoD and RoG and the great man among men Paul O'Connell deserve this success, and from here on in we will dominate world rugby. Them Southern hemisphere cronies beware. (I'm sure most of you have no idea what I'm harpin on about but I'm sure Maro and Frenche' and a few others will!). And Bernard Dunne, a Dublin man from up the road, won the WBA World Boxing Champion crown last night, what a day for Irish sport.
Not so good for Roma eh. Ouch. Em, ouch. Not completely unexpected considering the C team we had to field. The important thing is not to lose focus and bounce back. Watched extended highlights (through fecked up dizzying black-and-white tinted vision), the goals were unfortunate and it could of been different (as in a still a loss, but not by such a margin), and we shouldn't be too disheartened, but thats the way she goes. Pity we didn't have the luck of the Irish yesterday, but our day will come.
Ireland deserved it this year and it's always good to see the English being put in their place. Nice to see O'Driscoll, O'Connell and O'Gara have some success, because they've been brilliant for quite a few years now.
Now, if the Scottish team can just learn how to catch a ball in the next year, we might actually be able to give you a game next time round.
Congrats edzo - I think half of Wales, even, was hoping Stephen Jones wouldn't nail that kick. That would have been too cruel. And it's nice to see Brian O'Drizzle will have won something special to mark his rightful place in Irish rugby folklore.
Edzo, I've been meaning to track this down for you for a couple of days. Here are some comments from BC on the primavera (in response to Crescenzi's debut, really, in the Samp match):
I thought you might be particularly interested in the final comment on Malomo and the quality of his partnership with Brosco. The comparison between D'Alessandro and Cerci is interesting too, I think.
Pauly and Tommaso, I'd like to come back to you both on several points...
Pauly, looking at the remaining fixtures, it's easy to theorise and say we appear to have the easier run-in. Let's hope our injuries and suspensions don't get in our way! Injuries can't be helped but suspensions can and I think it's time il mister addressed the problem, particularly with De Rossi and Mexes. For sure they are team players and give their hearts, but some yellow cards were completely unnecessary! It's been said that Spalletti's saving grace as a coach is his flair for tactics. We know him to be better than that so let's hope he proves he is still a winner and an organised one!
Also, I'm glad you picked up on my post re/Filipe and D'Alessandro...
Professore, you echo my thoughts on Filipe, time will indeed tell if he has the promise we hope. My bone of contention is he should have had more opportunity to show it. I could say the same of Okaka and Antunes but maybe the loans are best for now. D'Alessandro is the lad who gets me fired up...I've read of his dribbling skills for a little while now and he apparently holds the record amongst the primavere for being able to "sucker" opposing defenders into making stupid tackles which get them booked/sent off...even at his tender age he is worth giving some playing time with the first XI. Could we have our own Giuseppe Rossi under our noses? Cerci as I said in an earlier post I am not sure of. Perhaps it was too easy to be distracted by Castillo's free scoring at Pisa and now of course at Atalanta I think he is still out injured.
Riise? I already said in the Shoutbox that I owe him an apology. Seems he just needed time to settle in to a new culture and club. No he probably won't be special but he will serve us well enough if he goes on as is!
Iaquinta? Again you echo my own thoughts. He is not world class but he has pace and he won't give up! A team player, he will selflessly provide for others as well as trying to make his own opportunities and it angers me when I see our summer acquisitions. He was affordable and we could probably have gotten him if we had pushed harder. Incidentally, I note Lippi has called him up for the coming international...
Watching La Viola today reminded me of the gentleman's agreement we had from over a year ago with those Sicilian elefanti over Vargas. Another that got away! I'd like to know what Pradè and his supporting cast use for a brain. I fear our forum avvocato is right to state even if the existing Roma management had money they would still be a disaster waiting to happen! I hate to say I've seen it all before...
Baptista? I doubt if he can control his own effing water! I've said before his only plus factor is his ability to fire a cracking volleyed goal now and again! On that subject I'm reminded of Barusso, another primavera you mentioned. That's how he looked to me when I saw him, a thundering shot and little else. But I would like to be wrong, something I concede I may be if indeed the Faty you mention has talent.
Ed, Tom, Frenchy, and Andrew...some amazing stuff going on at the moment. Well done, Ed, I bet you wuz luvvin' it! What the hell is to become of the Italian side though? If we keep going as we are, we must be in danger of losing our place as sixth nation. Being the wooden spoon boys is one thing but this team gives it a whole new meaning in terms of results if not effort...Diego Dominguez and his buddies gave us hope but those days seem ages ago now!
btw, Frenchy, nice post on Menez...as you indeed say, the power of journalism!
So I'm re-watching the Cl game between Roma and Arsenal right now. That Fuckin 2nd english commentator (after half time), especially in the 50th minute, keeps talking about Totti and how he "certainly knows how to dive," and how Totta can "certainly learn from him [the skill of diving] in the next weeks".....that Fuckin ignorant asshole!
