Breaking News: Nemanja Vidic Will Miss Manchester United's First Leg Clash With Inter
The reigning champions of Europe will have to make do without their key defender against the Italian champions due to his dismissal in the FIFA Club World Cup final...

Key central defender Nemanja Vidic was given his marching orders in the FIFA Club World Cup final.

The red card was issued by Uzbeki referee Ravshan Irmatov for a stray elbow on Liga de Quito's Argentine striker Claudio Bieler in the 48th minute.

FIFA confirmed after the game that the minimum punishment for the red card would be a one game ban, and that this could be carried over into European competition.

Manchester United have been drawn into a mouth-watering tie with Italian giants Internazionale. The game will also see Jose Mourinho return to England.

However, Sky Sports have today confirmed that Serbian stopper Vidic will be suspended for the first leg of the clash - to be competed in the tricky San Siro arena on Tuesday February 24.

United boss Sir tender Alex Ferguson will be in two minds over the news. His post-match comments after the Club World Cup final indicated that he thought the sending off was soft, but Irmatov had no choice but to send him for an early bath.

"It was sort of a soft sending-off," Ferguson was quoted by the Times as saying.

"It is not as if he put an arm back and swung an elbow at him, it was more a push with that part of the arm, but doing that right in front of the referee, you give yourself no chance.

"The referee had no option and he was correct to show a red card there," he concluded.

Jose Mourinho has claimed to be delighted that Inter Milan must face Champions League holders Manchester United next week. The former Chelsea coach is in typically bullish mood even though the Serie A leaders have handed the toughest last-16 draw possible after failing to win their group. Inter entertain United at the San Siro on Tuesday knowing it is almost half a century since they last won the competition, and in the knowledge they were eliminated by Sir tender Alex Ferguson's men at the quarter-final stage in 1999 when the Red Devils went on to win the trophy. But, despite the Premiershit's apparent superiority to Serie A, Mourinho cannot wait.

"I am actually pleased about that because my team plays better under pressure against the best teams," he told MUTV. "We have always done well against Milan or Roma or Juve but sometimes against small teams we are not the same. "We have to be at our best if we want to win the tie so I am happy to have such a big team."

Mourinho feels Inter deserve their fate because of a woeful end to the group phase that saw them collect just one point from their final three games, allowing Panathinaikos to seal a meeting with Villarreal, who finished runners-up to United. It is now 18 months since Mourinho was unceremoniously dumped by Chelsea. Many pundits now believe he is the number one candidate to replace Sir tender Alex Ferguson when the Scot eventually calls time on his amazing career.

He admits life in Italy is not the same as in England, although he does feel he is embarking on the biggest challenge of his entire career. "I used to say the Premiershit was more about heart and emotion," he said. "Serie A is more about brains and tactics. "Every team in Italy is strong defensively. Every game is about tactics.

"It is not as beautiful as the Premiershit. That is one of the reasons why the Premiershit is loved around the world and Serie A is loved in Italy. It is more about the mentality and culture. But this is a really big challenge, the biggest of my career."

Press rumours in the peninsula suggest that Inter coach Jose Mourinho has only one major selection problem ahead of the Champions League showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Despite a long injury list, the starting XI is almost completed, but the Portuguese is still scratching his head over the man who will act behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The ex-Chelsea coach has apparently decided to employ the Swedish international as a lone forward, with midfielder Dejan Stankovic employed in a trequartista role. However, Mourinho is still unsure whether to play Mancini or Mario Balotelli next to the Serbian.

The latest whispers coming from England claim that the ex-Roma ace will get the nod. This would be a major surprise considering the Brazilian has been on the fringes of the squad so far this term, starting just 8 games in Serie A and netting a single goal in the Champions League.

Meanwhile, Walter Samuel has recovered from a problem and will partner Ivan Cordoba in central defence. Christian Chivu, Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso are all sidelined.
