Cambiasso: "Incentives, not pressure" Wednesday, 05 September 2007 19:44:01
[FOTO Wednesday, 05 September 2007 19:44:01]
APPIANO GENTILE - Inter and Argentina midfielder Esteban Cambiasso gave the following interview to Sky Italia programme Sport Time ahead of Wednesday afternoon's training session at the Centro Sportivo Angelo Moratti.
Cambiasso: Inter began last season's championship in the same way as this year, with a win and a draw. You then started to fly. Are you hoping history will repeat itself? "Let's hope so. We knew full well that we might have had a few problems at the start of the season because many players played summer matches with their national teams and started their preparation later, so they're a bit more tired. We're obviously hoping to start seeing again the Inter of last season after the break."
How much good will this international break do the team? "It's very useful. The win in Empoli is very important because it gives those who stayed here the chance to work in a serene environment and allows those away on international duty to be relaxed. It's a victory that makes us aware that Inter are still there."
Will there be more pressure on you in the league this year? "There's no big club with more pressure than another in a championship like the Italian one. Those who play for Inter know their responsibilities well and know that we always have to win for the environment and everything that surrounds it, because everyone is on your back at the first slip-up. We must get used to this situation."
How much has winning a lot in these past years helped you? "It certainly helps. You can't build a winning team from one day to the next and I have said this ever since my first day at Inter. We can say Inter is a great team now because it has won two Scudettos, two Super Cups and two Tim Cups in three years. This is very important because it gives you tranquillity and the respect of all your opponents."
It seems like the championship is more balanced this season than last year. "This is an incentive for us. We're certainly pleased about the return to Serie A of teams like Juventus, Napoli and Genoa, clubs with lots of fans who weren't there last year. But we know we have to work hard to confirm the good things we did last season."
Despite confirming the importance of the championship, president Massimo Moratti hasn't made a secret of how much he would like to win the Champions League... "We all want to win the Champions League. We know that it's a strange competition and that an off-day can ruin everything. We have to learn the lesson of last year and hope for that touch of magic you need in the Champions League."
Inter have done a lot for Adriano. What's your comment on what's happening to the Brazilian? "He must think about what everyone at this club has done for him. Both myself and my team-mates have spoken to him about what the problems might be. Adri just has to continue to work hard now, just like he's doing. Only by doing this can he return to being a great player."
Sinisa tipped for Serb post Wednesday 5 September, 2007
Sinisa Mihajlovic could be given the bench of the Serbian national side and continue to work as Inter’s assistant manager, according to reports.
It is rumoured that the former Lazio defender is being lined up to take charge of his country’s international football team for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
There are even claims that Mihajlovic could take the job as early as the end of this season if they fail to reach Euro 2008.
He has been Mancini’s assistant manager since last season, helping Inter to the Scudetto and Italian Super Cup.
According to newspaper ‘Tuttosport’ and some Serbian media outlets, Mihajlovic could well remain as Inter assistant manager during the first year of his tenure as an international Coach.
Then his place at San Siro would be taken by another former Lazio star, Dario Marcolin.
Serbia appointed Spaniard Javier Clemente on July 19, 2006 – their first ever foreign Coach even during their previous incarnations as Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro – but the team lag in fourth place in Group A
In our latest editorial, we look back on the recent controversy involving Adriano...
Once upon a time there was a Brazilian starlet who lived in Milan and was called L’Imperatore by his legion of adoring fans.
He was a powerfully built man-child who was more physically and technically gifted than almost all of his peers, his dynamic goals and Herculean strength being the envy of opposing players and fans alike.
He was the toast of the town, the man of the hour, a godsend who was widely heralded as the saviour for a team that desperately wished for one.
His dazzling displays in the Serie A and Confederations Cup in 2005 put many teams in a frenzied pursuit of the Brazilian with the magic left foot. His club, Inter, were turning down offers as high as 50 million pounds for his services.
Indeed, his supporters gushed that he was going to lead Inter to the Promised Land. He had a beautiful girlfriend, a boatload of money and talent that most players could only dream of.
Fast forward two years later and Inter’s glorious saviour has morphed into a deflated, depressed and overweight outcast who has been ostracized to the very fringes of the first team. How times have changed.
Adriano has failed to feature in the starting line-up or even on the substitutes bench in the domestic league, and his name has been excluded from Inter’s squad list for the Champions League Group Stage matches. He has been offered to a plethora of teams, all of whom have passed on the fallen star they once begged for.
So the million dollar question around Milan seems to be, how did this fairytale turn into a nightmare? The warning signs were prevalent all around the San Siro - for those who bothered to look.
Instead of being the revered figure to save the team, he turned into a destructive force. There were whispers of a falling out with Mancini as Adriano would come late to training sessions - if he bothered to even come at all.
His face was plastered on the front page of the sports dailies not for his goal-scoring prowess but for his conquests in the many nightclubs Milan has to offer.
There were rumours of a rift between the Brazilians and the Argentines on the team because of the allegedly unique set of rules in place for Adriano, who had apparently merited special treatment.
This squabble boiled over at a crucial moment in the season for Inter as the rift culminated into a dressing room fist-fight between Adriano and Juan Sebastian Veron at halftime of the Champions League setback against Villarreal two years ago.
Inter were widely tipped to beat the ‘yellow submarine’ and advance to the Champions League semi-finals, but their subsequent loss infuriated the fans, players, coaches and even President Moratti himself.
It was the low point of the nerazzuri's season, and Veron headed home in disgust to Argentina shortly after the season ended.
A year later, the Emperor repeated this mistake, also against a Spanish side in the Champions Laegue Adriano made an irresponsible decision that sabotaged his own team. He stayed out too late partying the night before the team was to fly to Valencia and was not included in the trip for the crucial match.
Instead of facing questions regarding their opponent, Mancini was bombarded by questions about Adriano, who was clearly a distraction, as the nerazzuri lost their focus and crashed out of the competition long before they were expected to do so.
Is it the pressures of fame and fortune that caused his downward spiral? Is it the ancient curse of hubris that threatens to derail his once promising career?
Do clubs give young players too much money and too much freedom that they are destined to go off the rails... or are they just a bunch of spoiled brats?
There are no easy to answers as to why he could potentially throw his career away for late nights at the disco. We do not know what demons may be floating around in Adriano’s head.
He has told us that he is still reeling from the death of his father a couple of years back. He acknowledged that he was sent back to Brazil last year as he was suffering from bouts of depression. He admitted that he turned to alcohol to try and ease his inner pain.
What we do know is at the moment Adriano is frozen out of Mancini’s squad and that he was offered to many teams on a loan deal. We also know that Moratti and Mancini have finally decided to put their foot down and try a tough-love approach with him which - including no appearances in the lucrative Champions League matches anytime soon.
So where does Adriano go from here? He can either whine and sulk on the sidelines and become a distraction for his club again or he can train hard, stay out of the limelight and repay the team for the faith and leniency they have shown him for the last two years.
At the tender age of 25, it is entirely possible that L’Imperatorre can turn his fortunes around and reign supreme again for a team that is silently praying for his day of redemption.
The President of Inter wants to recover the Brazilian back to his best form in order to help the Nerazzurri reach the season targets.
Massimo Moratti has no intention of letting Adriano leave Inter. On the contrary, the Nerazzurri's Patron wants to wait for the Brazilian to hit his best form once again as he has not lost hope in him yet.
"He's just going through a difficult moment," explained Moratti. "It's up to him to find himself, whereas we must help him. For this reason we have decided to rest him in the Champions League, but only for the first phase.
"The lad knows that he must find himself again and we're sure to have a champion."
In the meantime, Moratti is enjoying watching Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
"One like him, who invents from nothing what no one would think of, enchants me," he affirmed.
"He's the greatest for me right now. What he does is not crazy, it's art. From ten thousand players, he makes things which would come to his mind only."
Maldini on his way to becoming a legend? Ha yeah right, thats funny! Outside of Italy Maldini is considering as the best Italian player of all-time, respected and admired by everyone who is interested in football and seen as possibly the greatest ever defender in the history of the game. In an era where the phrase is bandied around far to often, I think it would be save to say that Maldini is without a doubt a true legend of the game.
And with all the talk of British players who played in Italy and could be considered a legend, I think there is only one who stands out head and shoulders above anyone else. He is way before anyone's time here, of course, (except Maro), and played for Juventus and Roma, and some other smaller Italian sides, I think. John Charles is consideried as possibly the best ever British player, and he was even voted 'the greatest foreign player ever in Serie A' back in the 90's, and is the only non-Italian to be inducted to the Azzurri Hall of Fame.
He is off our books at last.....

Adriano revived with hat-trick Sunday 9 September, 2007
Adriano scored a hat-trick in Inter’s friendly test and could make his comeback in Sunday’s match with Catania.
L’Imperatore has been in the stands for all the official ties this season, dropped as a tactical decision by Coach Roberto Mancini.
He was also excluded from the Champions League list, so he will not be able to play in the tournament until at least January 2008.
It seems he has finally been shaken from his funk and bagged a hat-trick in a friendly clash with the Inter youth side.
In a bid to take him away from the partying lifestyle and alcohol problems that plagued him since the death of his father, Adriano will also be given some family support.
His mother Rosilda, little brother Thiago and son Adrianinho are flying in to Milan next week to help him through this difficult time.
The game with Catania is the perfect opportunity for Adriano to make his mark, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and David Suazo are likely to be rested after international duty.
I think there is a better chance for him to called up now than the last two games.....As said ibra and suazo are from international duty...And we also have the champions league game midweek.......
Ibra might play a half and then be substituted but suazo might be rested completely.....
