Amauri for the Azzurri?

Palermo hitman Amauri is set to apply for an Italian passport and could soon be in the frame for an Azzurri shirt.

The talented Brazilian-born striker spent long periods of last season on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, but has battled back from a nine-month absence and is regarded as one of Serie A’s most promising talents.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful pre-season and found the net in the Rosanero’s Week 2 win over Livorno.

Having been regularly overlooked by Brazil, many experts in the peninsula are insistent that the ex-Chievo man should try his hand in an Italy shirt.

Toni gets recovery boost

Azzurri marksman Luca Toni’s chances of playing in Saturday’s Euro 2008 qualifier with France have increased, according to the national side’s doctor.

The Bayern Munich striker has enjoyed a fast start to the season with three goals in his first three Bundesliga outings, but suffered a thigh injury against Hannover last weekend.

Initial reports suggested that the ex-Fiorentina hero would miss Saturday’s San Siro encounter, but the news is much more promising today.

This is kind of like cammo's situation, although I believe one or both of his parents are Italian. Looking at the Brazilian strikers now, I'm starting to wonder why they haven't called him up. I think we'll give amuari a shot just to take a stab at Brazilian football. I doubt they'll be happy with him playing for us, especially if he does well.

Lets not forget that millions, and I mean millions of Italians emigrated to South America after the war. Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela were the foremost destinations. I know nothing about Amauri's ancestry, but I am willing to bet he has either Italian parents or grandparents which would enable him to obtain the passport. Under most circumstances, you can become an italian citizen through either your parents or grandparents even though you were born in another country. You can also become an italian citizen even if your parents were not born in Italy under specific circumstances.
