Mourinho lashes out at 'horrible' Inter Inter's defeat at Atalanta has narrowed the gap at the top of Serie A, but Kaka's mooted departure may mean Milan are unable to take advantage
www.guardian.co.uk – Monday 19 January 2009 – Paolo Bandini
Perhaps this was just Jose Mourinho's way of making sure he got his share of the attention. All eyes were on the San Siro on Saturday, as Kaka played what many believe was his last game for Milan, but within 24 hours they had turned to a rather smaller venue in Bergamo, less than 40 miles away. At the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, Mourinho's Internazionale had been not so much beaten as blown away by an Atalanta side that started the day in 11th. The game finished 3-1 to the home side, but the margin could easily have been greater.
"Normally I like to talk about the merits of my opponents when my team loses, but this time we played so badly I'd prefer to say we gave them the result with an unspeakable first 40 minutes," offered Mourinho afterwards. Although he went on to remind reporters that his side were still winter champions, there was no mistaking the anger in his voice. "I am the face of this side and so I am to blame," he continued. "I prefer to speak badly about myself rather than say how my players, individually, made horrible mistakes."
This was not how the script was supposed to go. Atalanta had been excellent at home all season, but they had not beaten Inter on their own turf since 1994, losing five and drawing two of the past seven meetings in Bergamo. Inter, meanwhile, had played poorly against Siena and Cagliari either side of the winter break, but they had still picked up four points from those two games.
Mourinho's side was supposed to be, at the least, resolute – having conceded fewer goals than any other side in Serie A in the first 18 games. They had not conceded in the first half-hour of any game during that run, but goalkeeper Julio Cesar was beaten three times within 34 minutes of kick-off yesterday. In truth there was little he could have done about any of them.
Walter Samuel was badly missed in defence after being ruled out with flu, as was the suspended Sulley Muntari in midfield, but to focus on their absences would do Atalanta a disservice. Manager Gigi Del Neri might still be best known for his part in the so-called Chievo Miracle (he led Chievo from Serie B to a fifth-place finish in Serie A in the space of two seasons), but he has quietly turned Atalanta from relegation candidates into a solid top-flight outfit since being appointed in June 2007.
He inherited a small squad of modest talent, and with limited funds available Del Neri has been forced to rely on loan signings such as Napoli full-back Gyorgy Garics to supplement it. But he is tactically astute and his 4-4-1-1 makes good use of what he has. Ferreira Pinto, switched from the right wing to the left yesterday, did a superb job of keeping Maicon on the back foot, while captain Cristiano Doni is enjoying a fresh lease of life at the age of 35. Playing just behind striker Sergio Floccari, he was the best player on the pitch yesterday, scoring twice, orchestrating play and starving Inter's midfield of possession. It is Floccari, though, who is now receiving serious consideration for an Italy call-up.
After spending the best part of his career bouncing from one club to another in the lower divisions, Floccari has emerged, under Del Neri's tutelage, as one of Serie A's most prolific strikers. He scored his 10th goal of the season yesterday and now sits sixth in the Serie A scoring chart.
But such success only draws the attention of bigger clubs, and Floccari is already being discussed as one of the hot commodities for this summer's transfer window. He will not move before then, however, meaning that Del Neri has at least until then to both take advantage of the striker's form and plan for his departure.
Mourinho's team, on the other hand, may need far more immediate attention. "I don't think it is possible to see a worse Inter than the one we saw yesterday," said Inter owner Massimo Moratti today. "Mourinho makes the choices that he wants and we support him. He decided everything, even on the winter preparation."
Their lead was trimmed to three points, as Juventus drew 1-1 at Lazio, but they have now lost two of their first 19 games. It has not escaped the Italian media's attention that his predecessor, Roberto Mancini, went unbeaten over the same spell during three of his four seasons in charge.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended after picking up a yellow card against Atalanta, you can be sure all eyes will be on Inter again when they host Sampdoria next weekend.
Atletico Madrid star Sergio Aguero has ruled out a move to Inter Milan despite being advised to join the Italian champions by Argentina coach Diego Maradona. Maradona told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport last week that the 20-year-old would be better off joining the Nerazzurri, where he believed he would form a formidable partnership with Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But Aguero, who blasted his current side after Sunday night's 1-1 draw at Almeria, insisted he does not listen to everything his national team manager tells him and is happy to stay where he is.
"Diego doesn't come to Madrid very often and he doesn't stay at my house, he comes to see players. He doesn't influence me at all. The only thing he does is explain to me what football is like," Aguero told El Mundo Deportivo. "I didn't listen to him even though he said I'd make a good pairing with Ibrahimovic. I don't think about other teams. Atletico treat me well and I hope that continues."
Aguero was damning, however, of his side's result in southern Spain after they failed to beat the 15th-placed side despite playing against 10 men for a large part of the game. Kalu Uche had given Almeria an early lead before Florent Sinama-Pongolle equalised and neither side could find a winner - despite the 54th-minute dismissal of Almeria defender Hernan Pellerano.
Atletico midfielder Ever Banega, making a rare start, was sent off in the 90th minute for a second yellow card. The result marked a slight upturn in fortunes for Atletico, as Javier Aguirre's side had lost four on the trot in all competitions since the turn of the year. But the one-point haul was not enough for the Argentinian.
"This draw is worth nothing, it's of no use. We couldn't win. We didn't play well," he said. "Let's see if this poor run will end once and for all. Let's see if we'll start training well and playing better because playing like this we'll get nowhere."
Tottenham Closing In On Inter’s Adriano And Materazzi? According to the latest reports, Spurs have stepped up their interest in the Inter duo.
It has been reported on more than one occasion over the past few weeks that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in acquiring Adriano and Marco Materazzi from Inter Milan.
The reigning Italian champions, and current Serie A leaders, have denied these allegations though, by claiming that both players are content in the fashion capital, and that they will remain at the club without any fuss.
However, Sportsmediaset has reported that with all of the attention being focused on Manchester City’s failed offer for Kaka, Spurs’ officials are in Milan to discuss the future of both Adriano and Materazzi.
The early speculation suggests that the English side are keen on signing Materazzi for a three year period, whilst they want Adriano on loan, with the option of signing him on a permanent basis at the conclusion of the season.
The World Champion defender could be attracted by the proposal, as he would be set to earn around €3.5 million per year, and with less competition in terms of holding down a spot in the first team, it does seem a possibility for the controversial figure.
As for Adriano, it is almost impossible to predict his future, due to the fact that he has been linked with a move to and from the Nerazzurri so often over the past few months.
Spurs would like to employ the Brazilian for a six month period prior to the conclusion of the winter transfer window, before hopefully signing him at season’s end, just to ensure that he fits in well at the club.
Neither club are yet to comment on the proposed interest and for now, these reports are just rumours, although they continue to gain more attention over time.
Jose Mourinho Quick To Distance Inter From Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas
Mourinho has played down Inter's link with Spurs' want-away midfielder Jenas.
Jermaine Jenas (pictured left in action against Chelsea) is one of a host of player linked with a White Hart Lane exit this month. Meanwhile, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is being continually tipped to bring Premiershit players to Serie A and Inter.
The media have put the two factors together over the last 24 hours and reports emerged claiming that 'The Special One' was ready to deck the unsettled 25-year-old midfielder out in the Nerazzurri's famous black and blue.
However, the Portuguese tactician has moved quickly to pour cold water on the latest rumour. He insists that the basis of the link is a fantasy football team he put together in the summer - something he likely regrets now!
Mourinho explained: "Last July, the Daily Telegraph started their fantasy football league and paid me to take part.
"In my squad I put Jenas and others. Six months later, the market reopens and it comes out that I like these players.
"I like them, otherwise I wouldn't have put them in my squad, but that's a transfer market without rules."
There had been talk of a possible swap deal involving Jenas and Adriano, but Mourinho isn't having it. He added: "It seems to me that someone wants a player from Inter and they know I like another player, so they've brought out this story."
Getting paid for playing fantasy football, though, really is living the dream.
Inter To Fight Real Madrid For Cristiano Ronaldo - Reports
Inter Milan could fight with Real Madrid over Cristiano Ronaldo as the club aims to add some strength down the flanks...
Manchester United will have to fight off Inter as well as Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo after reports have suggested that the Italian Champions have joined the race for the winger.
Sportmediaset claims that the Nerazzurri are keen on the Portugal ace and their plan appears to pivot around Jorge Mendes, the agent of both Jose Mourinho and Ronaldo. It is, reportedly, his job to convince the youngster to join Inter.
Last week, Il Corriere Dello Sport claimed both the 'Special One' and Ronaldo were involved in a secret meeting to discuss plans for the future.
However, any plans Inter have of signing the Portuguese star will need to be grand after United coach Sir tender Alex Ferguson said that Ronaldo wouldn't be for sale for less than €120 million. Mourinho has always stated his penchant for the FIFA World Player of the Year and president Massimo Moratti is willing to bow down to the coaches' demands.
Inter need a winger who can play on both sides. Both Amantino Mancini and Ricardo Quaresma have been flops this season after their summer arrivals. Luis Figo looks set to retire, and thus the Italian side need some speed, skill and muscle down the flanks.
Mourinho has been tasked to bring Champions League glory to the San Siro and Ronaldo could be the answer to achieving glory on the big European stage. Moratti will do anything to secure the European Cup for the black and blue half of Milan and a summer move could be on the cards.
Real Madrid remain in pole position to sign him if daily reports from Spanish daily Marca are to be believed.
Moratti - Absurd to make signings. Inter supremo not planning to spend in January
Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti says it would be 'absurd' to dip into the transfer market before the window closes.
The reigning champions crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Atalanta on Sunday as Inter's lead at the top of Serie A was cut to three points over the weekend.
The manner of the loss has sparked suggestions that coach Jose Mourinho should strengthen his squad this month.
However, Moratti believes the result was a one-off and does not feel Mourinho will need to add to his ranks before the end of January.
"Yesterday was a terrible match, we played very badly, it was a match that really hurt," Moratti told reporters.
"It's hard to say what I was happy about, it wasn't a match, from the first whistle to the last there was no running, no concentration, nothing.
"It's everyone's and no-one's fault.
"Yesterday's match shows you that it would be absurd to look to the transfer market. Either you have 22 players who are washed out or it's absurd to look to the transfer market."
Moratti also refused to criticise Mourinho's selection for the game after the coach left out Mancini, Ricardo Quaresma and Mario Balotelli in favour of a team packed with players in their 30s.
He added: "Mourinho makes the decisions he feels are the right ones to choose those who are in the best form, regardless of their age.
"I have no problem with him not changing players or leaving out younger ones in favour of older ones.
"It's difficult for Mourinho to pick the team, but he picks who he wants."
Here's a news article Lomba would love and I hope it's true...
Tottenham Hotspur Agree Fee For Nicolas Burdisso The Argentine international could be on his way to North London after Tottenham Hotspur reportedly agreed a transfer fee with Internazionale...
It seems that Internazionale has proved to be a bit of a shopping window for Harry Redknapp this January if reports are to be believed.
Powerfully-built left-footed Brazilian striker Adriano had been linked with a Milan to London switch, with English midfielder Jermain Jenas being used as a potential makeweight.
Inter boss Mourinho though has since distanced himself with a move for Jenas, but may still be doing business with Redknapp as Gazetta dello Sport and calciomercato.com are both reporting that Tottenham Hotspur have had an £8 million bid accepted for defender Nicolas Burdisso.
Burdisso is contracted until 2011 but the Argentine is deemed surplus to requirements at the Serie A giants. Should the player agree personal terms then he will likely join fellow Latin American Wilson Palacios, as Spurs have also had a £12 million transfer fee accepted for Wigan Athletic's combative midfielder.
Burdisso was originally brought to Europe by Inter in 2004 when the Italians signed the player from Boca Juniors.
The 27-year old has received 22 international caps.
I'm too old to feel happy after such a speculation, Frank. How many times have we heard similar news about Burdisso in these past 2 years? Certainly, my feelings would change had I seen the magic words 'Official' up there..
