Gruelling training sessions in their Emirates winter camp paid off as the former England captain made his debut for the Italian club against Hamburg in the Dubai Football Challenge last night. Success came via a penalty shoot-out after a close-range Collin Benjamin strike had cancelled out a dubious penalty from Ronaldinho in normal time.

Both goals came after Beckham had been taken off following a 45-minute appearance that showed willingness and his eagerness to impress during his short-term loan spell from Los Angeles Galaxy.

Playing on the right of midfield, he constantly went searching for the ball and tried to set up attacks for his side. One link-up with Andriy Shevchenko saw the ball end up with Alexandre Pato, whose low drive was saved by Wolfgang Hesl in the Hamburg goal.

Beckham enjoyed the outing -- his first for three months -- and is hoping to have done enough to impress Ancelotti and earn a spot in the side for the testing trip to Roma on Sunday.

Serie A will certainly be a different proposition from this friendly fare and he will have to do much more to catch Fabio Capello's eye and stay in the frame for England.

He said: "I am still part of the national team. When I'm playing and when I'm fit the (England) manager has always said there's a chance he'll pick me.

"We will have to wait and see if I play (against Roma), but it is a special feeling every time I wear this shirt.

"I have never played in Serie A, so it's probably going to be a few games before I adjust. But football is football and it won't take me long to adapt.

"I felt good out there and enjoyed it. I love playing football and when you play for clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and now AC Milan, it is special." The Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti did not give much away about Beckham's future chances, but has been impressed by his dedication in the training camp.

"To me, he gave a very good impression," he said. "He showed dynamic quality and also he is an intelligent player.

"Obviously he is not at his maximum, but he had a good week with us and now he is in a good condition and can make a good contribution to the team."

While all eyes were on Beckham, the German opposition Hamburg, under the former Tottenham coach Martin Jol, will be disappointed they did not retain the trophy.

The Dutchman has shaped a good side which is challenging in the Bundesliga and the Uefa Cup. Dida, the Milan keeper, kept Hamburg at bay with good saves to deny Paolo Guerrero and David Jarolim.

Ronaldinho broke the deadlock after Massimo Ambrosini went down in the box. A penalty seemed harsh and frustrated Jol, who admitted: "The referee should not have given it. We did well and my team worked hard."

Benjamin deservedly equalised from close range, and, in the shoot-out, Dida blocked an effort from his compatriot Thiago Neves while Dennis Aogo hit the crossbar. Emerson missed for Milan, but the Italians -- and Beckham -- signed off their camp on a winning note.

"We won the game and that's important," Ancelotti added. "Now we can go off and build on that." After a solid, yet unspectacular start, Beckham will be hoping to do the same.

Bayern Munich chief, Uli Hoeness has slammed AC Milan for the way they behaved during their tour of Dubai. The Rossoneri have been in the United Arab Emirates for the past week as they prepare for the second half of the season. Bayern shared the facilities with the Italians and they are not impressed. David Beckham has been the star attraction in Dubai, but Hoeness feels the Rossoneri went over the top, treating the camp 'like a Hollywood film set'. Harsh words from the Bayern general manager as Milan come under the spotlight in every sense.

"The difference between us and them is that we played football where as Milan thought they were on a film set as if they were in Hollywood," Hoeness told SID. "My job is to run a football club and not to make sure Victoria Beckham has the best suite in the hotel. I don't know why Milan accepted all these demands. It was all just one big scene. Steven Spielberg was the only one missing."

The Rossoneri are still in Dubai. Vice-president Adriano Galliani is unlikely to take the words lightly and a reaction is expected.

Milan Work Hard, Beckham Goes Shopping

Milan midfielder David Beckham has been allowed to meet wife Victoria in the centre of Rome for some sightseeing, and, of course shopping, while the rest of the team continue working hard. The Englishman landed in the capital city with the rest of the squad after flying back from Dubai this morning.

However, rather than stay with his team-mates, Becks asked to spend the rest of the afternoon with his wife, even though Milan need to prepare for their game against Roma on Sunday.

Ansa.it claims the club have allowed him to do what he wants this evening as the rest of the squad continue their preparations. It is believed the former Manchester United star had some lunch at the ATA hotel in Rome before dashing out to meet Victoria.

The Rossoneri have come under heavy fire for the way they have been lenient with Beckham. On Thursday, Bayern Munich director Uli Hoeness slammed the Italians for their behaviour in Dubai.

Beckham is expected to make his full Serie A debut against the Giallorossi on Sunday. However, the latest reports suggest it could be delayed as he is not in top-form.
