AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini has praised the work ethic of loan signing David Beckham. The England midfielder is in Dubai with the rest of the Milan squad after joining the team on a short-term deal from the Los Angeles Galaxy and took part in his first training session with his new team-mates today. Beckham has not played since the end of the MLS season in October, but Maldini is confident the former Manchester United star will be match fit again soon.

"Beckham is a great champion, but we shouldn't forget that he has come into a great team and a great club like Milan," said Maldini. "We players don't care what his life is like off the pitch, we have found a lad who has not trained for two and a half months, but I have had the chance to talk to him and I noticed his determination and his great desire to put himself to work immediately to return to playing as soon as possible."

Beckham officially becomes a Milan player on 7 January and could make his debut four days later, against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has reiterated his belief that the former England captain will make a valuable contribution to the team before he returns to Los Angeles in March.

"This morning he took part in his first training session with the team," he said. "I believe he is an important player and that he will give his contribution to Milan. "He is a player who can play in all three roles in midfield and he has immediately put himself at the disposal of the group. This week away will be useful to evaluate his physical condition and then we will evaluate when it will be possible to use him in official games."

Meanwhile, club doctor Jean Pierre Meersseman believes Beckham can continue playing for another five years at least, by which time the midfielder will be 38 years old. "He will be at his top level in 15-20 days," he told Sky Italia. "The tests which he did showed that he is already very good. "He has an exceptional physique which will allow him, as happened to Maldini or (Alessandro) Costacurta, to play for another five or six years."

AC Milan will target a left-back in January as they look to strengthen their squad and close the gap on Serie A leaders Internazionale. Managing director Adriano Galliani has revealed coach Carlo Ancelotti plans to use the versatile Marek Jankulovski increasingly in midfield, creating a vacancy on the left side of defence.

"Our goal is to buy a major player, a player at the highest level who plays as a left-back, because we plan a move to midfield for Jankulovski," he said.

"But I deny that we will sign a central defender as we have several players there with (Paolo) Maldini, (Kakhaber) Kaladze, (Daniel) Bonera and (Philippe) Senderos."

Milan have already strengthened the squad with the signing of David Beckham on a short-term loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, although he will spend only two months in Italy before returning to America.

Milan trail Inter by nine points after 17 games, but Galliani insisted that the title race is still on. "Our desire now is to get off to a great start in the second half of the season," he said. "Our goals are to win the Scudetto and the UEFA Cup."

I remember this Guardado kid from a while back when half of Europe were after him before Depor snapped him up. Seems like he has being doing pretty well there, would be a good move for Milan.

tec, i still have hope for the scudetto, the optimist that i am .

inter always crash in the second half of the season, and we always have the most points in the second half of the season. add to that a tiring CL schedule, we still have a good chance as long as we stay focused and work our ass off every game.

the players are relying on their names too much, they forgot that everything requires hard work. thats what kaka' kept saying earlier in the season, that we need to stop thinking that we will win every game and instead work our asses off to make sure we win every game.

if i may be so bold to say, i think the scudetto is ours to lose. on our day, no team can beat us. but only we define what day it is, and if we try to half-ass waltz through games, then we won't be getting the required results to be the champions.

and seedorf needs to bring back his consistency. i want our midfield trio to be janks, pirlo, and seedorf. i think that was the perfect combination. but the pirlo-seedorf combination is the keystone to our strategy.

Carlo's had your boys polishing that silver platter we're going to be handing you your asses back on come next weekend. You guys are going to be out-pimped in the midfield - Seedonk's no match for Baptista the Beast of Bling.

We still have a chance at it but we will not win it. I think by the end of the season we'll reduce the 9pts gap but will not win it as we are not consistent enough to challenge for the title, small teams will continue to break our back and frankly i have yet to that mindset that make us win such games when we're not playing well. I think we'll be 5-6 pts off the leaders by season's end in 3rd position.

And with all due respect shinpin, a lineup of Janku-Pirlo-Seedorf will be nothing short of a disaster. It worked for 1 game at home against a team that is really struggling (they haven't won a game in 1-2 months or something) but others will know how to exploit it. We need a defensive presence there (Ambro or Flamini). Seedorf should not start under regular circumstances. He should compete with Dinho for 1 spot and 1 spot only. Also, Pirlo needs to fucking step up in the 2nd half because he's been a non-factor so far (in fact, negatively affecting us). Kaka and Pato should be the only untouchables in the attacking dept.
