Avvocato, you certainly write with a generic American accent. Except when you write "a mamma mia" where the Italian accent comes through much more strongly. Actually, Edzo, it's quite interesting that there is very little regional difference in accent within New Zealand and Australia. Localised accents, like dialects, are the stuff generally of longer and more densely populated histories than the antipodes have. Because the whities went there at a time when communication and transport were already so advanced, there's never been quite the same development of isolated demes and so the Australian accent can, as it were, be 'weaker' or 'stronger' and does vary here and there, really it's pretty flatly homogeneous and the NZ one even more so.
I see the king of profondita' dug us out of another hole on the weekend, though trust Mirko to try and steal the lime-light. Cicinho on the right side of a diamond? My, we were pressed. I don't know whether we got to see how much we miss Brighi or rather just how strange it is to change your formation to get the most out of your excess of quality midfielders 'di corsa' and then to stick with the same formation when four of them are out through injury or suspension. An excellent three points, anyway, and the highlights certainly made it look like we had some chances and might have gone a bit closer to keeping another clean sheet had Pauly's friend Reg been in goal.
Edzo, I lost the Italian accent a long time ago. Remember, this May I will be here for 29 years, give or take the few years I moved back to Italy in the mid 1980's. This is something that does not bother me in the least. I'm happy to have lost the accent because in this country, if you speak with an accent, you are viewed as stupid. In fact, I dont' understand people like my mother in law who came here in 1955, but has a very heavy accent and speaks 'broken english', which most of the time I have a hard time understanding. Although, she rarely speaks english to me or my wife. Her Italian, laced with dialect, is not much better. For me however, it became an obsession to speak without an accent although when I was in College, the chicks sort of liked. But I noticed that it is true that one is viewed as not only less intelligent, but almost childlike. People speak to you as though they were conversing with an 8 year old. That really used to upset me. So I made it a point to become not only proficient in english, but to speak like a native without a noticeable accent. As you say Stefano, I probably did pick up some things based on my friends and acquaintances, along with radio and tv. I imitated alot.
I suppose if my family went to England I would have a british accent. Actually, my cousin Lalina lived in England for a long time. She studied at Oxford, and she has a very Bristish accent. So, I guess we are the product of our environment. It's funny. I was talking to a guy from Verona at a wine tasting not long ago. We spoke for a while and he tells me I had a Calabrese accent. I resented this of course so I called him a Polentone, which is a derogatory term used to refer to inhabitants of the north of Italy who eat Polenta and not much Pasta. Those folks up there don't like the word much and are greatly insulted by it. The meaning goes beyond just being polenta eaters.

I see, interesting stuff on the antipodes (I had to 'dictionary' that), Maro. So it was a poor example. But my point remains, that there are different variations of accents in many countries which foreigners wouldn't be able to tell apart, like say here it Ireland or in britain, wouldn't you agree? Indeed, the King of Profondita didn't disappoint in the slightest and put a strong case forward to be called a legend himself with a performance like that. Still, he didn't pull his shorts down, so no biscuit baby. How was Toulouse, Tom?
Good article on Vucinic from http://www.romanews.eu/news.asp?newsID=376&pag=17&spag=14]RomaNews, far too long to (try and) translate all, but a few random bits:
• He started his career as a 16-year-old playing for his local team, Sutjeska Niksic, scoring four goals in nine game, before moving to Lecce for 800m lira (€400,000).
• Mirko is a calm man ('E scherzoso'?). He lives in a villa in Casal Palocco, near Fulvio Bernardini, with his brother, Nikola, and his fidanzata, Stefania, a native Lecce girl. He loves luxury cars and has been seen driving a Ferrari to work. He also has a younger sister, Tamara, who lives at home in Niksic with his parents, whom he often calls.
• Part of his celebration which he performed on Sunday – when he drew his finger across his neck in a slashing motion (he was angry at the crowd who booed him) – was he imitating a Chris Benoit trademark move, a former wrestler (wasn't he Canadian? And a whimp?). He says he is a wrestling fan, and himself, tender Alex Pinardi, Sammy Dalla Bona and Cassetti (SuperMarcoCassettiGol) used to watch wresting together in his Lecce days, and in breaks at training they used to perform wresting moves on each other for the craic. He said he don't think he should repeat his neck 'slashing' celebration move again (for his own safety).
• Dejan Savicevic calls him a "legend" and "idol to all children of Montenegro". I agree. And he is the only one to celebrate under the Curva with no shirt and no shorts. Ever. All hail the LitM. Ok, thats enough ass-kissin on my part, its home time.
We flew across, Avvocato. The in-laws live close to Gatwick, so we were with them on Friday evening and then flew into Toulouse and out of Carcassonne. If we'd had more time we might have taken the Eurostar across and trained down from Paris. I think the flight back cost us 1p plus taxes, which made it pretty hard to resist. We're thinking of going back and getting a gite in the Pyrenees in April - maybe 10 days in the Pyrenees and 10 days in Sicily, doing a bit of writing and reading in the sun.
scherzoso, means he is a guy with a good sense of humour, fun loving. Probably a guy who jokes around alot. So he likes luxury cars. Not that is a shocker don't you think. I have never seen his girlfriend. Probably a dark beauty from Lecce. Find some pictures Edzo.
