Maybe it's not such a good thing we don't have Pauly here - at least he could be the bone we could chuck in the middle for us all to attack together. It's quite interesting to me how much more politicised I think this debate is in America than in England or in New Zealand. That pseudo-Spanish matador, 'El Gore', would be just about the last person to come to mind in the context of a serious discussion about this. One of the other things I find quite curious is what I sense is the basic assumption that 'evidence' in this case is straightforwardly the stuff of 'fact' rather than raw stuff upon which interpretation works. Quite clearly much of the same evidence is susceptible of being interpreted in quite distinct ways. There are an awful lot of scientists in this country, working in contexts which would suggest to me that they're relatively free from political interference, who believe that the evidence does point strongly to the current warming of the globe as different in kind from the normal historical rhythms of the globe and most plausibly related to the release of CO2 and the like into the atmosphere. That, I should have thought, was in fact the predominant scientific position - almost a consensus which many fewer voices contest. That doesn't, of course, mean that they can't all be wrong; it would hardly be the first time, but there are a fair few intelligent, politically independent, empirically engaged people who seem to take a different perspective and it seems strange to me that any carefully intelligent person would in a non-rhetorical situation really want to insist that there wasn't a single scrap of evidence behind this view. Scepticism sounds wise - but a healthy scepticism towards both sides' polemics.

I tend to avoid getting involved in discussions about the 'fraud' of global warming here in part because it seems to me that the important, technical stuff here is beyond the level of the engagement of most of us, but also because I'm much more instinctively inclined to side with glad's rather different approach to environmentalism. In the end, I'm not sure it matters whether this climate change is natural and irresistible or directly humanly produced. What does seem pretty obvious to me is that we're doing extraordinary amounts of damage to the environments of this world in all sorts of ways. There are too many of us and we're too rapacious in our treatment of the world. It also seems sensible to encourage a whole range of smaller gestures such as glad clearly embraces in the way he practises his architecture.

Populusque, I think I'd also be disinclined to trust that the market will sort this out on its own in the end. I'm not sure markets really work with enough of an eye on the not-so-immediate future. That is, of course, one point at which environmental issues inevitably have political/ideological implications.

You know, I really like and admire Tony Blair. But, to equate this global warming to the battle against Fascism is over the top. That's like the woman who compared the skeptics like me to those who deny the Holocaust.

ita, i do not know for a fact that changes in climate have nothing to do with human activity. in fact, i would imagine that activities such as clearcutting have some effect. however, i agree that solar cycles (obviously), and even the polarity of the earth's magnetic field (less obviously) have a much greater impact on this than human activity, but i think it would be a good idea if we did our part anyway; not because global warming is the worry, but because environmental damage is something we have control over and can prevent. our climate can remain the same but our environment can become so polluted and depleted that it would lower the standard of living for everyone.

i don't think we actually differ on this issue that much. i don't care about global warming, but i care about a healthy planet. the liberals have done a pretty good job at making conservatives such as yourself seem anti-environment by denouncing global warming.

Smashing game last Sunday. Feels like it was only yesterday I was standing in the stand soaking up the atmosphere and plastic pints of cheap warm beer. Didn't get back until late Tuesday night and its been straight back into the pre-Christmas madness with work. I think it had to have been the most exciting low-scoring game I've ever witnessed, which is funny, because back home when people asked me how was the match and when I tell them it was 1-0 its met with the usual responses of 'typical', but it truly was an action-packed and thoroughly enjoyable game. Curva Sud and Distinti were sold out so got the usual Tribuna seats. In the first-half we played some good stuff and were unlucky not to score early on, while Doni kept us in it with some heroics between the sticks, but Fiorentina began to cause us a lot of trouble in midfield and were getting ahead until Il Capitano decided to play and scored (watching La Domenica Sportiva that night, there were constant replays of the goal and they were arguing it should of been disallowed for Baptista being in an offside position and partially blocking Frey's view – which I think is a fair enough call, but tough shita).

Yes, that's the Vittorio Emmanuele at the end of the road. The receptionist dude in the hotel was a Romanisti (duh) and had a few interesting stories to tell which I don't have time to post about now, but will do later.

shield - judging by the photo, looks like youre hotel was right by piazza colonna (?). nice! not to mention easy access to the romastore. how the hell did you manage to get a room that hovers over via del corso? i dont remember ever seeing an overpass (like the bridge of sighs in venezia) and i've walked down that street many times. is it just a change in the street geometry/width that gives that illusion? please pass on the name of the hotel. i'd like to scout it out for my next trip.
