How disgustingly bad does the Menez signing look if you believe the news today that reads 'Podolski can be had for €15 million.'

You know, Populusque, I just don't know how to judge that one. I don't know what to make of Podolski and I don't know what to make of Menez. Certainly the biggest problem with Menez was that he's one for the future and this team had to be one for the now to make the most of Totti. I hope Mutu breaks his dick off on the weekend, but it would have been nice to see what he could have done alongside Totti without the need to learn his trade and adjust to a new league. Still, I just can't figure out Podolski. Perhaps he would have been perfect wide-left in our 4-2-3-1, bringing quality and goals and work-rate. I don't know that he has the technical quality to be a top-quality midfielder, though, or a second forward and I don't know if he has the physique to be a genuine prima punta. In short, I suppose, he has much more ability than Klose, but I'm not sure he will ever he as effective a player. On the other hand, for all that I'm pretty hard on Menez and think there are times of late when he's looked pretty awful, he doe have two things that you can't coach and which are the markers of real quality in the end - real pace and excellent technique. In both he has the potential to be much better than Mancini, for instance, and I'm not sure that with a little bit of maturity and a little bit of confidence and a string of games that he can't be top-drawer for this club. If he has the application and intelligence to make the most of his natural ability, he will prove to be a very very fine player. Whether that's this year or next year or not for another four years is, of course, the immediate problem for us.

now im starting to think we have way too many strikers. Totti, Vucinic, Julio Baptista, Menez, Okaka, Montella, Cerci....... i like Podolski and Huntelaar and all but, some changes are going to have to be made.

Maro i agree on your views as to what to think of Podolski or Menez. i gave it some thought and agree that Podolski would be good for that wide-left but leaving off on his WC06 performance, he can play in Vucinic's role with more of a finishing touch. as for Menez, i think with either Baptista/Perrotta/maybe Pizarro as our trequartista, Menez will be the one for the future in that position. Aquilani is another obvious decision too but with his injuries, the depth for the midfield had to be increased. dunno if this was the way Spalletti planned it, but i still believe that our transfer season isnt a total fuck-up yet. Riise is a different story.

There's never any bother getting tickets so I can't see why it'd be any different tomorrow, but I was hoping to perhaps go to the Curva Sud for the first time but I think they're nearly all sold out.

Edzo, I'm not sure that article says anything about the Curva Sud, though it certainly doesn't list a price for those seats, but that may go with the territory. There are still Distinti Sud, I gather, and the point of the piece really is that ticket sales have been pretty slow.

Thanks Tom. I guess in my haste I got the meaning (translation) of that article mixed up. "Pochi biglietti per la Fiorentina": I took as meaning little tickets left for Fiorentina. Shouldn't be a problem. Yes I was thinking of trying out the Curva Sud, or perhaps the Distinti Sud, so as to be closer to action in the stands and not up in the skies of a tribuna.

I hope everyone close to you is alright Jam. I was planning on visiting Mumbai as a possible destination during a visit to SE Asia this summer, but I think I may pass now.



This was the crowd that trampled the worker who died in a Wal-Mart earlier today. What self-respecting person, let alone man, waits in a lineup outside a Wal-Mart and then shoves/tramples employees on his way to picking up a cheap DVD player. Shopping for anything is pure hell.

SPQR, I would not let these bastards or their nationalist counterparts put you away from visiting Mumbai or any parts of India in the future. Of course I would be cautious and even go as far as stating I was Italian (I'd claim Indian myself) if needed, but staying away is letting the bad guys win. Luckily all of my family is in the deep south and were not affected and friends in Mumbai are ok.

An aside though, my aunt's store was burned in sectarian riots in 1998 and mobs did go by her house (she had fled with her family to another town), but she soon returned and lives in the same house as if nothing really happened. It's a question of being vigilant, but this is not the first time this has happened in India, nor will it be the last. If you do go, this will make for great conversation with locals as everyone will have a story and an opinion and will let you get a great insight into the country.

It was my birthday today as well but I guess no one noticed, yis bastids. Up in four and a half hours to catch our flight to Rome, and I'm ever so slightly pissed. Ah well, I don't mind gettin up so early if its for Rome.
