Jose Mourinho says Panathinaikos deserved their 1-0 success over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

Inter are still through to the last 16 of the tournament despite the defeat, but their unbeaten run in European competition is over.

Josu Sarriegi's second-half tap-in gave the Greek outfit a famous win and Mourinho says the surprise result was not down to luck.

"Panathinaikos' win is absolutely deserved. People may say they were lucky but I don't agree," said the former Chelsea manager.

"After that performance we don't deserve to go through. We must be angry with ourselves."
Hoping for support

The result was in stark contrast to last weekend's victory over Juventus and Mourinho hopes the fans will continue to back the team.

"After the joy of last Saturday, Inter fans have a sad moment and I am sorry. For what the players have done in previous seasons, they deserve some leniency from the fans," he added.

"We have qualified in the Champions League and are top of Serie A without luck so I hope the fans stay close to the team."

Despite the setback the Portuguese tactician believes his troops can go on and be crowned European champions: "I think so.

"To succeed in this competition you have to be strong when it comes to the knockout stages."

Panathinaikos' Dutch coach Henk Ten Cate has stated he never lost faith in his troops after they lost their first two group games.

"Surprised, yes of course. If you start the qualification group with two defeats, normally it's game over," said Ten Cate.

"But we kept believing and I said there are still four games to play. My team is improving a lot. We came this summer and we are building a new team.

"The biggest success is that we made Greek players believe they can win away from home. Normally their self-belief away is not so big but they proved they can learn quickly.

"If you are well organised like we were today, you can surprise a lot of people."

Sorry guys, I apologize for taking an interest in italian football. Obviously I've come to the wrong place. You guys are pathetic. Did I come in here and try to rub that loss in your faces? No, briz made a comment about mourinho and I think he's right. There's nothing more to it.

Thanks for the advice stinkybitch, I hope the pain goes away soon. Coming from someone who frequently takes it up the rear, this is the one subject I'll have to take your word for.
