Italy Coach Marcello Lippi is set to choose between Alberto Gilardino and Luca Toni to start in a 4-3-3 formation against Bulgaria. The world champions face a tough test away to a dangerous Bulgaria side and they will need to play better than they did against Cyprus and Georgia. Udinese marksman Simone Pepe looks likely to be handed his debut and the battle to join him up front with Antonio Di Natale is between in-form Gilardino and out-of-sorts Toni.

I'm happy for Montolivo and Pepe... hopefully they'll do well. I was just hope Maggio starts at RB and Zambro at LB.

Azzurri face Bulgarian challenge

The Azzurri have landed in Sofia ahead of tomorrowÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s World Cup qualifier, as Bulgaria boss Plamen Markov warns theyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ll play to win.

Marcello Lippi and his squad flew in to Sofia and immediately travelled to the Levski Stadium to view the pitch for SaturdayÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s game.

The tactician remained tight-lipped, but the reports continue to maintain Alberto Gilardino is the favourite to start upfront with Antonio Di Natale and Simone Pepe, leaving Luca Toni on the bench.

The Bulgarian media is focusing heavily on this big match and the Federation announced a 100,000 Euro prize for a victory.

dont like dossena at lb, plus having toni up front byhimself is useless. rossi or cassano partnering him will be better. but hey thats my opinion.

Dossena Relishes Azzurri Role

The 27-year-old moved to Anfield over the summer after a breakthrough season at Udinese and was given the nod by Marcello Lippi to control the left channel in the World Cup qualifier with Bulgaria at the Levski Stadium, due to a spate of injuries that have hit the national side, including Lyon's left-back Fabio Grosso.

"I strongly want to keep my place in this squad and keep movng on," he told the website specialized in transfer gossips.

Dossena has met up with several former Udinese teammates at Coverciano, as Lippi opted to put trust in the Friulani attacking trident, with Fabio Quagliarella now also joining debutant Simone Pepe and diminutive marksman Antonio Di Natale for the Stadio Via Del Mare game with Montenegro next Wednesday.

"Pepe has improved a lot and he has lots of qualities," he enthused.

"As for TotÃƒÂ² [Di Natale], we linked up well at the Stadio Friuli, I know what he will be trying to do before the ball even gets to him."

It was suggested that other Italian clubs were in the frame to land Dossena over the summer, such as Fiorentina, but he plumped for an experience abroad in the end.

"Liverfekkin'wankscum are a prestigious club and I was willing to try my hand in England," he asserted.

"I don't really think the Viola approached my agent, and to tell you the truth, I am somewhat astounded that Italian sides did not make a move for me."

To be fair to Dossena, he did knock Riise out of the team which is no mean feat given the quality the ginger ninga possesses. On a slightly more serious note, Shield, one of the things Lippi said in his first interview back in charge of the Azzurri was that we'd see one or two new faces in the squad who hadn't had much of a chance under Donadoni and he singled out Dossena and Gila, I think. I suspect he picked out Dossena in part as a slight on the fact that Donadoni went to the Euro Championships with barely a true fullback in the squad. Lippi said there that Dossena had come on a lot and would be given a chance with the Azzurri so I suspect you'll have to get used to the sight of him down that left flank for Italia.
